There are cases where a person suffers from knife or arrow wounds but their vital energy (Qi) has not yet ceased. Some may have broken skin with profuse bleeding, some may have torn flesh with protruding intestines, some may have arrowheads embedded in the skin, and some may have fingers severed by blades. Life and death hang in the balance within moments; is it acceptable not to rescue urgently?
Generally, injuries caused by metal blades must involve excessive blood loss. When blood is exhausted, thirst develops. If water is drunk at this point, death will occur immediately. Therefore, thirst caused by blade wounds must be endured firmly. Why do some people in the world recover after drinking water? This is because such individuals typically suffer from an internal heat disease (Re Bing), and water resolves the heat. However, one cannot rigidly apply this principle to treat all cases of injury-induced thirst.
Since drinking water is contraindicated when thirsty, what medicine should be used to relieve thirst? The key lies in replenishing Blood (Xue) to save the patient. However, if Blood is replenished to stop thirst, but the wound from knives or guns is large, the replenished Blood will still leak externally. If blood flow does not stop, there will be no end to the thirst, which is also a path to rapid death. Therefore, while replenishing Blood, hemostatic herbs must be used; and within hemostasis, agents that promote tissue regeneration must be employed. In this way, evil blood (E Xue) will not attack the Heart, and internal fire will not scorch the Stomach, allowing the dying to live, the ruptured to heal, and the severed to reconnect. Use the Formula for Completing Skin and Reviving Life Tang (Wan Fu Xu Ming Tang):
Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata, 3 liang), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 3 liang), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber, 3 liang), Yuan Zhi (Polygalae Radix, 3 liang - *Note: Text says Yuan Shen, likely referring to Sheng Di Huang or similar cooling herb, but strictly translating as written*), Yuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix, 3 liang), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 2 liang), Sheng Gan Cao (Raw Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 3 qian), San Qi Gen Mo (Notoginsengis Radix et Rhizoma Powder, 5 qian), Xu Duan (Dipsaci Radix, 5 qian), Di Yu (Sanguisorbae Radix, 1 liang), Ru Xiang Mo (Boswelliae Resina Powder, 3 qian), Mo Yao Mo (Myrrhae Resina Powder, 3 qian), Liu Ji Nu (Artemisiae Annuae Herba, 3 qian), Hua Rui Shi (Pyritum, 2 qian), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 5 qian). Decoct in water and take orally. After one dose, thirst stops; after two doses, the wound closes; after three doses, the severed parts regenerate; after four doses, full recovery is achieved.
This formula replenishes Blood and adds astringent flavors to prevent blood leakage and facilitate easy muscle growth. Why are Qi-tonifying herbs added? Because damaged Blood is difficult to regenerate quickly; tonifying Qi allows Qi to generate Blood. Furthermore, while Blood generation helps connect tissues, it is less effective than vigorous Qi in connecting tissues. Therefore, Qi-tonifying herbs are used alongside Blood-replenishing herbs. Although using Ren Shen and Bai Zhu is not strictly necessary for efficacy, the results may be slower and more difficult to achieve without them. This formula can treat any knife wound, adjusting the dosage of ingredients according to the severity of the injury.
