In this world, whether wise or foolish, immortal or mortal, rich or poor, everyone has a time to return to the origin. Confucianism calls it "Quan Zhong" (completing life with dignity), Buddhism calls it "Zuo Tuo" (passing away while sitting in meditation), and Daoism calls it "Yu Hua" (ascending as an immortal). Sages, immortals, and Buddhas complete both beginning and end, with clear will and spirit, thus expanding upward to become spirits. The mediocre and ignorant, whose qi is exhausted and spirit confused, return downward to become ghosts. The distinction between spirits and ghosts lies here. This moment should indeed be carefully grasped, but even more so should one be vigilant daily, constantly mindful, minimizing faults and regrets, reducing errors and desires, preserving the body with proper methods, nurturing the body with techniques, renewing oneself day by day without interruption. When the essence of Yang gathers and the spirit of Yin condenses, reaching pure Yin or pure Yang states, and when the quintessence accumulates to form a light, clear, and floating aura, the Primordial Spirit becomes the master, returning to the root and origin. If the body reaches the realms of extreme Yang and extreme Yin without any damage, how could it be difficult to bow together with immortals, Buddhas, and sages before Mother Jin and Lord Mu?! If one does not understand cultivation, mixing clear and turbid energies within the body, not only can one not make pure Yang energy rise again and again directly to the highest clarity, nor can one make pure Yin energy descend again and again to the lowest depths, but even in this semi-Yin semi-Yang world, preserving longevity would be difficult!
Cultivation must begin with moving Qi, because Qi is the pivot of spirit and also the pivot of the whole body. Jing (Essence) in the body is like water on earth. Jing originates from the Heavenly River, pours into the Zang-Fu organs, and reaches the limbs, just as water originates from Kunlun Mountain, scatters into ditches, and converges into rivers and seas. The Shen (Spirit) in the body is the master that transforms Qi into Jing. And Qi flows like the two energies through the four seasons, disperses in the four directions, descends and ascends, with clear rising and turbid sinking. Yang accumulates to form the Sun, Yin condenses to form the Moon. The operation of Sun and Moon, alternating cold and heat, allows all forms of life to generate endlessly, starting and ending, ending and starting, so that the vitality of life never ceases. If humans know methods of Daoyin (guiding and pulling), even if daily routines and diet occasionally lose their timing, as long as one inhales turbidity and exhales clarity, making light things heavy and condensed, and ensuring blood vessels and meridians are unobstructed, then every aperture will be exquisite, every joint flowing smoothly, which can also dispel cold, heat, and plagues. When skill is profound and manipulation becomes familiar, breaths in moments reach the Heavenly Court above, the Sea Bottom below, and the four limbs in between, the San Jiao (Triple Burner) harmonizes and flows freely, the hundred bodies regulate, and even slight ailments are removed instantly; how can they cause harm? It is like at times of extreme Yang and extreme Yin, stagnation accumulates into fierce winds, thunderstorms, dark clouds, torrential rains, hail, and scorching sun disasters. Once the two energies operate, dividing Yin and Yang, there will ultimately be no sky-darkening, earth-cracking catastrophes, and eventually returning to Yin-Yang balance and harmonious four seasons. Did the Qi of Heaven and Earth lose its normal state since creation? It is also due to the decline of human hearts, where breath connects to Heaven, Heaven and Man correspond, accumulation leads to change, so ancient heavenly times differ from recent ones. Lifespans in the primordial era differ from later generations; records in ancient texts are not entirely absurd. If humans can generate Jing through moving Qi, and generate Shen through Jing, then the five Zang and six Fu organs, twelve meridians, four limbs, hundred bones, hair, and skin will all possess the aura of bright daylight, free from obscurity and confusion, is this not being like people of the羲皇 (Fuxi) era?! As the proverb says: Humans are small heavens and earths, truly not false. Ancient immortals said: Taking in Qi prevents death. Also said: Returning Elixir ensures eternal life; Qi is the medicine for adding years, Heart is the god driving Qi. If one knows the secrets of moving Qi, one is learning to be an immortal. These words all advocate reversing the flow through Daoyin. Should cultivators not pay attention to breathing?!
