(From Liu Wansu's *Xuanming Lunfang*) Treats excess heat with accumulated phlegm, fanwei (vomiting and regurgitation due to obstruction), and swelling/abdominal fullness caused by damp-heat. To the original Shizao Tang (Ten Jujube Decoction), add Dahuang (Rhubarb Rhizome) 1 liang, Heiqianniu (Black Morning Glory Seed) 2 liang, and Qingfen (Calomel) 1 qian. Form into pills using water.
Shizao Tang consists of Yuanhua (Genkwa Flower), Gansui (Kansui Root), and Daji (Euphorbia Root). It vigorously attacks water qi with formidable power. (These symptoms are all caused by water qi. Zhang Zhongjing's formulas for draining water vary greatly, but this is the most potent one. Yuanhua, Gansui, and Daji are fierce drugs for breaking through water accumulation; therefore, the sweet nature of Dazao (Jujube Fruit) is used to moderate them, aiming for a slow action along the meridians rather than a direct assault on the intestines and stomach. By attacking gently, the fluid retention in the heart and hypochondrium will be discharged via urination and defecation.) Coughing and expectoration pulling with pain in the chest and hypochondrium is called Xuanyin (Hanging Fluid); if fluid retention persists for a long time, it must form Pixin (accumulated masses). Crushing the cysts and breaking the masses eliminates the fluid. (Xuanyin refers to fluid hanging like an object. Fluid retention and phlegm-saliva linger in the meridians, forming nests/cysts that hang under the hypochondrium. Only these three ingredients can reach the hidden places of these fluid nests, which other drugs cannot. The present treatise states, "If Xuanyin does not cause sudden death, but persists for a hundred days or a year, Shizao Tang is appropriate," indicating that the condition develops gradually.) Do not use lightly in emaciated or deficient individuals. Hejian Sanhuashen Wan (Three Flowers Divine Pill of Hejian) adds Da Huang, Qingfen, and Qianniu Zi. It effectively unblocks congestion and seizes phlegm-saliva. (Qianniu Zi and Dahuang strongly purge blood and qi congestion; Qingfen seizes phlegm, penetrating every orifice.) It can also open up Yige (dysphagia/choking) caused by accumulated phlegm. (Liu Wansu said: "For fanwei and yige caused by accumulated phlegm, if after taking three pills of this medicine the pain and oppression worsen, it is because the phlegm-saliva congestion was suddenly attacked but not yet opened; taking it again will naturally cause diarrhea.")
(From Chen Yan's *Sanyin Ji Yi Bing Zheng Fanglun*) Treats sudden onset of pulling, rope-like pain in the chest, back, hands, feet, waist, neck, and joints, moving unpredictably; or cold bi (obstruction) in the hands and feet. This is due to phlegm-saliva residing above and below the chest and diaphragm, not a wind syndrome.
Gansui (heart removed), Daji (skin removed), Baijiezhi (White Mustard Seed) (equal parts). Grind into powder, make into pills with paste. Take 5–7 pills per dose, increasing to 10 pills, taken at bedtime with ginger decoction.
Kongxian Dan treats the root of phlegm. (The root of phlegm is water/dampness; when combined with qi and fire, it condenses into phlegm.) It can cure all pathological changes caused by phlegm-saliva. (Li Shizhen in *Bencao Gangmu* says: "Phlegm-saliva, as a pathogen, ascends and descends with qi, reaching everywhere: entering the Heart, it confuses the orifices causing epilepsy, delirium, and hallucinations; entering the Lung, it blocks the orifices causing cough with thick sticky sputum, wheezing, and cold back; entering the Liver, it lingers and accumulates causing hypochondriac pain, dry retching, and alternating chills and fever; entering the meridians, it causes numbness and pain; entering the sinews and bones, it causes pulling and dull pain in the neck, chest, back, waist, hypochondrium, hands, and feet. Chen Yan's *Sanyin Fang* uses Kongxian Dan as the primary treatment for all these, achieving remarkable efficacy.") It treats wandering pain, numbness, pulling pain in the chest, back, waist, neck, or limbs; it also treats dysphagia, wheezing, epilepsy, carbuncles, and scrofula. Zangfu organ damp-water is drained by Daji; Jingmai meridian damp-water is pushed by Gansui; phlegm-qi in the subcutaneous tissue and membrane exterior is eliminated by Baijiezhi, whose efficacy is indeed miraculous. (Baijiezhi is white, enters the Lung, reaches the Upper Jiao, and eliminates phlegm in the subcutaneous/membrane exterior; Gansui is yellow, enters the Spleen, moves through the Middle Jiao, and drains damp-water from the meridians; Daji is black, enters the Kidney, moves to the Lower Jiao, and drains damp-water from the zang-fu organs. Although their guiding actions differ, they all facilitate the flow of damp-water and phlegm-saliva from the Three Jiao out through the water passages. Hence, they are combined into a formula. Only those who master its use can achieve miraculous results.)
