[Sanyu Baisan Formula] Indicated for food stagnation in the stomach and intestines, imbalance of cold and heat, leading to abdominal distension, urgent qi mechanism, severe pain resembling death; as well as Zhong'e (sudden attack by evil pathogens) or Kewu (unexpected adverse influences), and various sudden acute diseases.
Radix et Rhizoma Rhei (Dahuang) Dried Ginger (Ganjiang) Crotonis Fructus Preparatum (Badoushuang, prepared Croton seed) [Note: Original text lists Badou processing first, then Dosage]. Each one liang. The aforementioned medicines must be selected to be refined and fresh. First, pound Dahuang and Ganjiang into powder, add Badoushuang, mix and pound a thousand times, prepare as a powder; mixing with honey to make pills is also good. Store in a sealed container. Administer with warm water and vinegar, take three or four pills the size of soybeans per dose. If the pills are not swallowed, lift the patient's head and force-feed until swallowed; within a short time, improvement should occur; if there is no improvement, administer three more pills. Thereupon, borborygmus (abdominal rumbling) should be heard, followed by vomiting or diarrhea, and the disease will resolve. If the jaw is clenched, it is also necessary to pry open the teeth and force-feed.
Indicated for Cold-Excess Jie-Xiong (Chest Binding Syndrome), without significant high fever.
Prepared Croton Seed (Badoushuang) 1 fen Fritillariae Thunbergii Bulbus (Chuanbeimu) Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng) Each 3 fen. Pound into powder, add Badoushuang and pound again, mix with rice water for administration. For robust individuals, half a qianbi (a small measuring spoon); for frail individuals, reduce the dose. If the pathology is above the diaphragm, vomiting will inevitably occur; if below the diaphragm, diarrhea will inevitably occur. If diarrhea does not occur, drink one cup of hot porridge to assist the medicinal effect; if diarrhea persists uncontrollably, drink one cup of cold porridge to stop it.
(Verse Commentary: Beiji Wan treats sudden acute diseases, Zhong'e causing near-death state, abdominal distension and urgency. Dahuang, Ganjiang, and Badoushuang in this formula enter the disease site directly like breaking through gates. (Dahuang is bitter and cold, purging heat accumulation; Badou is acrid and hot, purging cold accumulation. Their properties and flavors mutually restrain each other, so using them together actually slows down the purgative effect. More ingeniously, the acrid dispersing nature of Ganjiang guides Badou and Dahuang, internally connecting to the spirit, externally repelling evil influences, assisting their momentum of breaking through barriers, thereby achieving the merit of restoring order from chaos.) In cases of coma, clenched jaw, and inability to open teeth, prying open the teeth to force-feed is still effective. (In Zhong'e and Kewu, with coma and clenched jaw, prying teeth and force-feeding leads to immediate revival.) Cold-Excess Jie-Xiong (Similar to Great Excess Jie-Xiong syndrome, but without symptoms of heat, thirst, and irritability. That is due to Heat-Excess, whereas this belongs to Cold-Excess.) Sanyu Baisan consists of Beimu, Jiegeng, and Badoushuang. (Beimu and Jiegeng elevate Lung Qi to eliminate phlegm and dissipate nodules; Badou eliminates cold and breaks excess to open Jie-Xiong. Prepared as a powder for oral administration to disperse Cold-Excess in the Middle Jiao.) If the medicine does not induce Mingxuan (adverse reaction indicating efficacy), the disease will not heal. These emergency formulas should be prepared in advance and carried on the person to treat sudden conditions. (Prepare in advance, carry on the body, to rescue sudden emergencies.)
