*Figitur Concha Viverrae* (3 qian, washed and ground into powder, levigated with water) *Catechu* (1 qian) *Borneolum Syntheticum* (2 fen).
This formula is specifically indicated for Fei Gan (pulmonary malnutrition/chronic wasting disease manifesting as oral ulcers), presenting with lesions that are shiny and hard, or gingival rot with white discoloration; insufflating the powder leads to immediate recovery.
*Ren Zhong Bai* (1 liang, calcined) *Phellodendri Cortex* (5 qian) *Coptidis Rhizoma* (3 fen) *Charta Bombycis* (3 qian, calcined) *Borneolum Syntheticum* (1 qian).
It is a key medicine specifically for treating Kou Gan (oral ulcers) following smallpox. [Note by E: I used Zhong Bai San containing Catechu, Indigo Naturalis, and Menthae Haplocalycis Herba, without Coptidis Rhizoma and Charta Bombycis, which was also effective.]
Tree sap, applied to the affected area, brings about immediate cure; this is an effective formula for treating E Kou (thrush).
*Bovis Calculus* (3 fen) *Borneolum Syntheticum* (5 li) *Borax* *Bombyx Batryticatus Preparatus* (honey-fried) *Phellodendri Cortex* (each 1.5 qian).
Grind all ingredients into a fine powder together, mix with honey, apply to the affected area, or form pills the size of a longan fruit for dissolving in the mouth; both methods result in recovery.
It is specifically indicated for deficiency fire flaming upward, causing sores in the throat that are ulcerated and broken.
*Borax* (5 qian) *Natrii Sulfas Crystallizatus* (1.5 liang) *Bombyx Batryticatus Preparatus* (2 qian) *Borneolum Syntheticum* (1 fen).
This formula is a miraculous agent for treating Feng Re Hou Bi (wind-heat obstruction of the throat) and Chan Hou Feng (strangling wind-throat); adding 2 qian of Yao Huang renames it Jin Suo Chi.
*Xiyanghuang* (likely referring to *Moschus* or similar aromatic substance, contextually distinct from standard Niu Huang) *Borneolum Syntheticum* (each 1 fen) *Sanguis Caprae* (2 fen) *Electrum Rubrum* (3 fen) *Coptidis Rhizoma* (5 fen) *Borax* (1 qian) *Carbon Fructus Canarii* (3 fen) *Cenanthii Herba Cinis* (5 fen).
Grind all ingredients into a fine powder together. For each spoonful of medicine, mix with one spoonful of honey, place on the tip of the tongue, and swallow slowly five times a day. If there is no improvement, add Yan You Mei to this formula, and recovery will ensue; it is a sacred medicine for treating Hou Xuan (throat lichen/tuberculosis).
Radix of *Achyranthes bidentata* (commonly known as Chou Hua Niang Gen), washed and crushed to extract juice, instilled into the mouth. If swallowing is impossible, have the patient lie supine and drip the juice into the nose so that it flows down to the throat, which may also help relieve the obstruction.
It is specifically indicated for all types of Hou Feng (wind-throat) and Ru E (tonsillitis). Although the herb seems humble, its efficacy is significant and should not be overlooked. One may harvest the roots in autumn, dry them in the shade, grind them into powder, or crush fresh roots to extract juice and mix with the dried powder for emergency use.
