*Dao Shan Qing Hua* records: In his later years, Zhang Ziyan, a Shaoqing (a title for an official), often saw flashing white light before his eyes, within which there was a person in white clothes resembling a Buddha. Zhang Ziyan believed this with great earnestness, and thus stopped eating meat and drinking wine; however, his body became emaciated and he suffered from many illnesses. At that time, the Taining (referring to the Emperor) was unwell. Wang Shouqing entered the capital from Shu to diagnose the imperial pulse. Wang Shouqing’s medical skills were widely renowned, and his door was as crowded as a market. One day, Zhang Ziyan sought diagnosis from Wang Shouqing. Upon seeing him, Wang Shouqing was greatly startled, said nothing, but prescribed dozens of large pills and a thousand small pills worth a thousand coins, instructing him: "Take these within ten days, then come back to report." After several days, Zhang Ziyan noticed that the white-clad figure he had seen now wore yellow clothes, and the white light was no longer visible. He desired to eat meat and drink wine; his vision cleared, and he felt his bodily qi different from previous days. He went to Wang Shouqing to inform him. Wang Shouqing said: "I knew this would happen. Your Spleen initially suffered disease, being overcome by the Lung. The Heart is the mother of the Spleen. Since you were prone to suspicion, your Heart Qi became unstable, naturally leading to visual hallucinations. I used large pills to solidify your Spleen and small pills to tonify your Heart. The Lung is the child of the Spleen; since it could not overcome its mother, the illness healed itself." Zhang Ziyan found this miraculous and believed deeply, so he secretly asked Wang Shouqing about the diagnosis of the imperial pulse. Wang Shouqing replied: "The pulse indicates that the Spring Qi should cease; even a master of life could do nothing about it." It was already the eighth month of the first year of the Yuanyuan era change. By the first month of the third year, Taining passed away peacefully. Wang Shouqing later retreated to Mount Hua, when he was already eighty years old. Master Wang’s diagnostic methods can be described as divine and illuminating. His syndrome differentiation and medication use fully revealed profound essence. Areas difficult for others to fathom all had clear directions and归宿 (归宿 here implies destination/conclusion).
Yang Renzhai stated: For cases of robust fever and irritability, Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) and Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) are used to resolve and benefit. If the heat temporarily lessens but does not recede, use Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), and Wu Mei (Mume Fructus) as a decoction. Alternatively, use Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Di Gu Pi (not specified, likely Di Gu Pi or similar, text says Sheng Di - Rehmanniae Radix), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Chi Shao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra) decocted together; just before completion, add a pinch of Deng Xin Cao (Junci Medulla) to treat; the effect is also rapid. This is because Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) and Sheng Di (Rehmanniae Radix) can both regulate blood. Once Heart Blood is regulated, the heat naturally subsides. (The Heart is the Official of the Sovereign. When Heat clears from the Heart, the fever retreats. Those skilled in treating Heat first regulate Blood; when Blood is regulated, Qi flows freely, and there is naturally no external heat of steaming and burning.) *Xin Fa Fu Yu* states: The method of reducing fever lies entirely in clearing the Heart. One must use Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Deng Xin Cao (Junci Medulla), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), and Fu Ling (Poria). Because the Heart is the master of the whole body and the root of all matters; all commands follow the Heart. If the Heart is not clear, it moves recklessly, and the heat does not recede. However, Heat can injure Blood; if Blood stagnates, Qi becomes depressed, and the heat does not recede further. Therefore, the method of reducing fever again involves regulating Blood, using Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) and Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix). If Yang floats on the exterior, it should be astringed and descended. The general principle uses Shen Ling Bai Zhu San (Ginseng, Poria, and Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder), decocted with Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus).
