Dai Mao Yu Jin Tang (Tortoise Shell and Curcuma Decoction) – Method of Clearing and Disseminating Phlegm-Fire in the Pericardium. An empirical formula by Mr. Yu.
Raw Dai Mao (Tortoise Shell, Qielonggu, 1 qian, crushed) Sheng Shan Zhi (Gardenia Fruit, Zhizi, 3 qian) Xi Mu Tong (Akebia Stem, Mutong, 1 qian) Dan Zhu Li (Bamboo Sap, Zhuli, 2 ladles, mixed in) Guang Yu Jin (Curcuma Rhizome, Yujin, 2 qian, freshly pounded) Qing Lian Qiao (Forsythia Fruit, Lianqiao, 2 qian, with heart) Fen Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex, Mudanpi, 2 qian) Sheng Jiang Zhi (Fresh Ginger Juice, 2 drops, mixed in) Xian Shi Chang Pu Zhi (Fresh Acorus Rhizome Juice, Shichangpu, 2 small spoons, mixed in) Zi Jin Pian (Zijin Tablets, 3 fen, dissolved in boiling water and mixed in).
First, decoct Ye Gu Gen (Wild Asparagus Root, 2 liang), Xian Juan Xin Zhu Ye (Fresh Heart-shaped Bamboo Leaves, 40 branches), and Deng Xin (Juncus Effusus, 2 small brooms, approx. 5-6 fen) in 6 bowls of water. Boil down to 4 bowls. Take the clear decoction and divide it into two portions for decocting the herbs.
[Commentary by Xiu:] When pathogenic heat sinks inward into the Pericardium (Pericardium Meridian of Hand-Jueyin, a defensive layer surrounding the heart), it condenses body fluids into phlegm. This phlegm mists over the orifices of the mind, blocking the passages through which the spirit enters and exits. The patient will speak and see hallucinations, suspect ghosts and spirits. Consciousness becomes cloudy and confused, expectoration is difficult. Commonly known as "Phlegm Obscuring," therefore, we use Dai Mao (Tortoise Shell), a shellfish that possesses spiritual penetration, and Yu Jin (Curcuma Rhizome), with its subtle fragrance opening the orifices, as the Sovereign (primary) herbs. One provides heat-clearing and detoxifying effects similar to Xi Jiao (Rhinoceros Horn); the other has the power to resolve stagnation and cool the heart, more effective than Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome). We employ Lian Qiao (Forsythia Fruit) with the heart as the Minister (assistant) herb; its acrid-cool nature reaches the Pericardium directly to open the orifices. Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex) is acrid and penetrating, excellent at clearing collateral heat and dispersing fire. We guide the action with Shan Zhi (Gardenia Fruit) and Mu Tong (Akebia Stem), causing the stagnant fire of the Upper Jiao to descend曲折ly through the Lower Jiao and be excreted via urination. We assist with Jiang Zhi (Ginger Juice), Zhu Li (Bamboo Sap), and Shi Chang Pu Zhi (Acorus Juice); their acrid-moist properties facilitate flow and are excellent at washing away collateral phlegm. We direct the formula with Zi Jin Pian (Zijin Tablets), whose aromatic nature opens the orifices, assisting all other herbs in penetrating the spiritual realm. The subtlety lies in Ye Gu Gen (Wild Asparagus Root), which shares the function of Lu Gen (Reed Rhizome) but acts faster in cooling and promoting fluid flow. Paired with Zhu Ye (Bamboo Leaves) and Deng Xin (Juncus Effusus), which are light, clear, and penetrate collaterals, this formula thoroughly clears the pathogenic heat sinking into the Pericardium and the phlegm-fire misting the mind's orifices in one stroke. This is an excellent formula for opening orifices, penetrating collaterals, washing away phlegm, and clearing fire. After taking one or two doses, if consciousness becomes manic and restless, chest fullness and shortness of breath occur, accompanied by high fever, irritability, and thirst, this indicates that the pathogenic heat sinking into the Pericardium desires to emerge but cannot do so abruptly. Urgently use San Zhi Ning Luo Yin (Three Juices Calming Collateral Decoction), administer slowly until finished. After a while, chills will gradually appear, followed by deep sleep, profuse sweating, and clarity of spirit. If there is no response after two hours, prepare another dose. Repeated trials have proven effective.
Attached Formula: San Zhi Ning Luo Yin (Three Juices Calming Collateral Decoction) – Method of Opening Orifices, Penetrating Collaterals, and Resolving Fire-Toxicity. An empirical formula by Xiushan.
Bai Jing Huo Di Long (White-jointed Live Earthworm, Dilong, 4 pieces, washed clean, ground in a clay mortar like cement, filtered for clear juice. Additionally, use Long Nao (Borneol), Xi Huang (Calculus Bovis, Niuhuang), and Chen Sha (Cinnabar), each 1 fen, ground evenly.) Sheng Jiang Zhi (Fresh Ginger Juice, half a small spoon) Xian Bo He Zhi (Fresh Mint Juice, 2 small spoons). Use half a cup of well water to mix the three juices and the three substances: Borneol, Calculus Bovis, and Cinnabar.
[Commentary by Xiu:] This formula uses aromatic herbs to open orifices and acrid-moist herbs to invigorate collaterals, with extraordinary efficacy. If Calculus Bovis (Niuhuang) is considered too expensive, using Jiu Zhi Dan Xing (Nine-Processed Areca-derived Phlegm-resolving Herb, Danshen/Danxing) 8 fen as a substitute is also effective.
Xi Di Qing Luo Yin (Rhino-Horn and Rehmannia Clearing Collateral Decoction) – Method of Clearing and Disseminating Stagnant-Heat in the Pericardium. An empirical formula by Mr. Yu.
Xi Jiao Zhi (Rhinoceros Horn Juice, Xijiao, 4 spoons, mixed in) Fen Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex, Mudanpi, 2 qian) Qing Lian Qiao (Forsythia Fruit, Lianqiao, 1.5 qian, with heart) Dan Zhu Li (Bamboo Sap, Zhuli, 2 ladles, mixed evenly) Xian Sheng Di (Fresh Rehmannia Root, Shengdihuang, 8 qian) Sheng Chi Shao (Fresh Red Peony Root, Chishao, 1.5 qian) Yuan Tao Ren (Original Peach Kernel, Taoren, 9 grains, peeled) Sheng Jiang Zhi (Fresh Ginger Juice, 2 drops, mixed together).
First, decoct Xian Mao Gen (Fresh Imperata Rhizome, Maogen, 1 liang) and Deng Xin (Juncus Effusus, 5 fen, decocted as water substitute) and Xian Shi Chang Pu Zhi (Fresh Acorus Rhizome Juice, Shichangpu, 2 spoons, mixed in).
[Commentary by Xiu:] When heat sinks into the Pericardium causing unconsciousness, it is either phlegm confusing the heart orifices or blood stasis blocking the heart's cavity. Only light, clear, and spiritually penetrating substances can open the orifices and penetrate the collaterals. Therefore, we use Qianjin Xi Jiao Di Huang Tang (Qianjin Decoction of Rhino-horn and Rehmannia) as the Sovereign herb to cool and unblock collateral stasis. We employ Lian Qiao (Forsythia Fruit) with the heart as the Minister herb to penetrate the Pericardium and clear the heart. Taoren (Peach Kernel) moves the Heart Meridian to invigorate blood. However, collateral stasis must involve sticky saliva/phlegm, so we assist with Jiang Zhi (Ginger Juice), Zhu Li (Bamboo Sap), and Shi Chang Pu Zhi (Acorus Juice); their acrid-moist properties wash away phlegm-saliva. Shi Chang Pu (Acorus Rhizome) further has the power to open the heart's cavity. The subtlety lies in Mao Gen (Imperata Rhizome), which penetrates and emerges in spring, excellently cooling blood to clear heat. Deng Xin (Juncus Effusus) is light in quality and bland in taste, further clearing the heart to descend fire. This is an excellent formula for lightly clearing and penetrating collaterals, unblocking stasis, and draining heat. If there is no response after two or three hours, urgently add Niu Huang Gao (Calculus Bovis Paste) to the secondary decoction to achieve rapid effect.
Xi Ling San Zhi Yin (Rhino-Horn and Antelope Horn Three Juices Drink) – Method of Clearing and Disseminating Phlegm-Stasis in the Pericardium. An empirical formula by Mr. Yu.
Xi Jiao Jian (Tip of Rhino-horn, Xijiao, 1 qian) Dai Xin Qiao (Lianqiao with heart, 2 qian) Dong Bai Wei (Eastern White Peony Root, Baiwei, 3 qian) Zao Jiao Ci (Gleditsia Spine, Zaocixu, 3 fen) Ling Jiao Pian (Antelope Horn Slices, Lingyangjiao, 1.5 qian) Guang Yu Jin (Curcuma Rhizome, Yujin, 3 qian, pounded) Tian Zhu Huang (Bambusa Textile Tuber, Tianzhuhuang, 3 qian, traditional style) Fen Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex, Mudanpi, 1.5 qian) Dan Zhu Li (Bamboo Sap, Zhuli, 2 ladles) Xian Shi Pu Zhi (Fresh Acorus Juice, Shichangpu, 2 spoons) Sheng Ou Zhi (Fresh Lotus Root Juice, 2 ladles, mixed with the three juices and taken together).
First, decoct Xi Ling Er Jiao (Rhino-horn and Antelope Horn), Xian Mao Gen (Fresh Imperata Rhizome, 50 branches, peeled), Deng Xin (Juncus Effusus, 5 fen), and Huo Shui Lu Sun (Living Water Reed Shoots, Lususun, 1 liang) to make a decoction as water substitute. Before administration, mix in Zhi Bao Dan (Treasure of the Cabinet Pills, 4 pills), blend evenly, and dissolve to take.
[Commentary by Xiu:] When pathogens sink into the Pericardium, mixing phlegm and stasis to obstruct the clear orifices, symptoms must include spasms and convulsions occurring simultaneously. The patient sleeps deeply all day without waking, or speaks incorrectly and groans, or speaks alone as if seeing ghosts. The whites of the eyes show many red threads. Although the tongue is purely red, it is coated with sticky saliva. This is a critical severe syndrome. Therefore, we use Xi (Rhino-horn) and Ling (Antelope-horn) to cool blood and extinguish wind, and Zhi Bao Dan (Treasure of the Cabinet Pills) with aromatic properties to open orifices as the Sovereign herbs. We employ Dai Xin Qiao (Lianqiao with heart) as the Minister herb to disseminate Qi stagnation in the Pericardium. Yu Jin (Curcuma) and Dan Pi (Moutan) address Blood stagnation in the Pericardium. Bai Wei (White Peony Root) specifically treats Blood Syncope. Tian Zhu Huang (Bambusa Textile Tuber) excels at opening Phlegm Syncope. Crucially, we assist with Zao Jiao Ci (Gleditsia Spine) and the three juices, which are light, clear, acrid, and penetrating, reaching the disease site directly to eliminate phlegm and stasis. We direct with Lu Sun (Reed Shoots), Mao Gen (Imperata Rhizome), and Deng Xin (Juncus Effusus), which are light, clear, and penetrate collaterals. Thus, phlegm becomes active and stasis scatters, allowing the Pericardium to restore its normal state of horizontal connection and widespread distribution. This is the premier excellent formula for opening orifices, penetrating collaterals, resolving phlegm, and unblocking stasis. However, when the disease is this critical, only one in ten patients may be saved.
[Commentary by Lian:] If Zhi Bao Dan (Treasure of the Cabinet Pills) is ineffective, Zi Xue (Purple Snow) from the Bureau Formulary, Xin Ding Niu Huang Qing Xin Wan (Newly Regulated Calculus Bovis Clearing Heart Pills), or Wu’s Angong Niu Huang Wan (Angong Calculus Bovis Pills) can also be used for emergency situations. The formulas are recorded below for reference during clinical practice.
Ju Fang Zhi Bao Dan (Bureau Formulary Treasure of the Cabinet Pills) – Excerpted from Wu’s *Wen Bing Tiao Bian* (Systematic Differentiation of Warm Diseases).
Xi Jiao (Rhinoceros Horn) Zhu Sha (Cinnabar) Dai Mao (Tortoise Shell) Hu Po (Amber) (Each above 1 liang) Niu Huang (Calculus Bovis) She Xiang (Musk) (Each above 5 qian).
Dissolve An Xi Xiang (Benzoin Resin, 1 liang) in hot water bath, mix with other herbs to form pills, totaling 100 pills. Wax coating.
[Commentary by Lian:] The original formula also contains Xiong Huang (Realgar, 1 liang), Long Nao (Borneol, 3.5 qian), and Gold/Silver Leaf (50 sheets each), ground finely for coating. Xu’s *Ben Shi Fang* adds Ren Shen (Ginseng), Zhi Nan Xing (Processed Arisaema), and Tian Zhu Huang (Bambusa Textile Tuber).
This formula gathers various spiritual substances, all capable of supplementing the Heart substance, facilitating Heart function, removing pathogenic filth, and resolving heat knots. Xu Huixi said: "An essential formula for calming the spirit and stabilizing the soul, truly a divine pill."
Ju Fang Zi Xue (Bureau Formulary Purple Snow) – Wu added "Dan" to the name, removing gold from *Ben Shi Fang*.
Hua Shi (Talcum Powder) Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum) Han Shui Shi (Calcitum) Xuan Shen (Scrophularia Root) Sheng Ma (Cimicifuga Rhizome) (Each above 1 jin) Ling Ci Shi (Magnetite) Po Xiao (Mirabilite) Yan Xiao (Saltpeter) (Each above 2 jin) Xi Jiao (Rhinoceros Horn) Ling Jiao (Antelope Horn) Qing Mu Xiang (Aquilaria Wood) Chen Xiang (Agarwood) (Each above 5 liang) Gong Ding Xiang (Clove, 1 liang) Zhi Gan Cao (Prepared Licorice Root, 0.5 jin) Chen Sha (Cinnabar, 3 qian) She Xiang (Musk, 1.2 liang).
[Commentary by Lian:] The *He Ji Ju Fang* also contains 100 liang of Gold. Xu Huixi replaced it with 10,000 sheets of Gold Leaf. The original formula had 4 jin of Fire Saltpeter and 10 jin of Mirabilite. Xu stated that two saltpeters are too much, reducing them to one-tenth. Fang’s Throat Department removed the two saltpeters from the original formula, adding Xi Gua Xiao (Watermelon Saltpeter, 8 qian) and Mei Bing (Plum Ice/Borneol, 3 qian), specifically treating sore throat, throat wind, heavy phlegm nodules, purple blisters on the tongue, etc. Most excellent.
This formula dispels filth, opens orifices, drains fire, and dissipates nodules. Xu Huixi said: "When pathogenic fire and toxic fire penetrate meridians and enter viscera, with no medicine to treat it, this can resolve them. Its efficacy is miraculous."
Xin Ding Niu Huang Qing Xin Wan (Newly Regulated Calculus Bovis Clearing Heart Pills) – Excerpted from Wang’s *Wen Re Jing Wei Fang*.
Xi Huang (Calculus Bovis, Niuhuang) Xiong Huang (Realgar) Chuan Lian (Coptis Rhizome, Huanglian) Zi Qin (Scutellaria Root, Huangqin) Shan Zhi (Gardenia Fruit, Zhizi) Guang Yu Jin (Curcuma Rhizome, Yujin) Chen Sha (Cinnabar) Xi Jiao (Rhinoceros Horn) (Each 1 liang) Zhen Zhu Fen (Pearl Powder, 5 qian) Mei Bing (Borneol) She Xiang (Musk) (Each 2.5 qian).
Grind into powder. Make pills with locust bean gum paste. Each weighs 1 qian. Coat with gold leaf. Wax seal. Remove wax before use.
This formula is based on Wan’s Niu Huang Wan, adding Xi (Rhino-horn), Zhu (Cinnabar), Bing (Borneol), She (Musk), and Xiong Huang (Realgar). It treats heat sinking into the Pericardium, unconsciousness, mania, and delirium. It is stronger than Wan’s formula. Use this for severe cases; use Wan’s formula for mild cases.
Angong Niu Huang Wan (Angong Calculus Bovis Pills) – Excerpted from Wu’s *Wen Bing Tiao Bian* (Systematic Differentiation of Warm Diseases).
Xi Niu Huang (Western Calculus Bovis) Xi Jiao (Rhinoceros Horn) Guang Yu Jin (Curcuma Rhizome, Yujin) Chuan Lian (Coptis Rhizome, Huanglian) Sheng Shan Zhi (Gardenia Fruit, Zhizi) Xiong Huang (Realgar) Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root) Jin Bo (Gold Leaf) Zhu Sha (Cinnabar) (Each above 1 liang) Mei Bing (Borneol) She Xiang (Musk) (Each 2.5 qian) Zhen Zhu Fen (Pearl Powder, 5 qian).
Grind finely and evenly. Make pills with locust bean gum paste. Each pill weighs 1 qian. Coat with gold leaf and wax seal. For deficient pulse, take with Ginseng Decoction. For excess pulse, take with Honeysuckle and Mint Decoction. Take one pill per dose. For adults with severe illness and strong constitution, take twice daily, even three times daily. Children take half a pill. If no effect, take another half pill.
[Commentary by Lian:] This formula uses aromatic herbs to transform turbidity and benefit the orifices. Salty-cold herbs protect Kidney Water and calm the Heart substance. Bitter-cold herbs unblock the Fire Fu-organs and drain Heart function. It specifically treats heat sinking into the Pericardium, unconsciousness, and delirium. It also treats sudden syncope due to flying corpses, five types of epilepsy, and malignant qi, as well as spasms and convulsions in adults and children caused by heat. It is highly effective. Mr. Wu Jutong stated that Angong Niu Huang Wan is the coolest, Zi Xue (Purple Snow) is second, and Zhi Bao Dan (Treasure of the Cabinet Pills) is third. Their indications are slightly similar, but each has its strengths. Choose according to the syndrome during use.
[Commentary by Rongzhai:] Based on my immature understanding, the main functions of the above four formulas are: Zhi Bao Dan (Treasure of the Cabinet Pills) is first for clearing blood, detoxifying, calming the mind, and stabilizing the spirit. Zi Xue Dan (Purple Snow Pill) is suitable for maculopapular typhoid; it should not be used for loose stools because it contains Po Xiao (Mirabilite), a purgative. Niu Huang Qing Xin Wan (Calculus Bovis Clearing Heart Pill) has the function of sedating nerves and also strengthens the heart. Angong Niu Huang Wan sedates nerves and also clears heat. These are major medicinal pills; when used appropriately, their efficacy is immediate.
Lian Qiao Zhi Chi Tang (Forsythia and Fermented Soybean Clearing Decoction) – Method of Clearing and Disseminating Pericardium Qi Mechanism. An empirical formula by Mr. Yu.
Qing Lian Qiao (Forsythia Fruit, Lianqiao, 2 qian) Dan Xiang Chi (Light Fragrant Fermented Soybean, Douchi, 3 qian, stir-fried until fragrant) Sheng Zhi Ke (Immature Bitter Orange Peel, Zhike, 8 fen) Ku Jie Geng (Bitter Platycodon Root, Jiegeng, 8 fen) Jiao Shan Zhi (Charred Gardenia Fruit, Zhizi, 3 qian).
Xin Yi Jing Ren (Magnolia Flower Bud Kernel, Xinyiren, 3 fen, mixed and pounded) Guang Yu Jin (Curcuma Rhizome, Yujin, 3 qian) Guang Ju Luo (Tangerine Pith, Juluo, 1 qian) Bai Kou Mo (White Cardamom Powder, Baokoufen, 4 fen, divided into two doses for mixing in).
[Commentary by Xiu:] Whenever external pathogens initially sink between the chest and abdomen, this corresponds to the Pericardium region. In all infectious diseases, after sweating, vomiting, or purging, mild cases present with empty irritability and insomnia; severe cases present with internal restlessness, tossing and turning, bitter oppression in the epigastrium, or knot-like pain below the heart, restlessness in lying and rising. Those with slippery coating on the tongue are all manifestations of Pericardium Qi stagnation. Therefore, we use Lian Qiao (Forsythia Fruit), the primary herb for clearing and lightly disseminating Pericardium Qi branch, and Shan Zhi (Gardenia Fruit) and Dou Chi (Fermented Soybean), which excel at clearing empty irritability, as the Sovereign herbs. We employ Xin Yi Ren (Magnolia Kernel) mixed and pounded with Yu Jin (Curcuma) as the Minister herb, specifically opening Pericardium Qi stagnation. We assist with light agents Zhi Ke (Immature Bitter Orange Peel) and Jie Geng (Platycodon Root) to dissebrate Pericardium Qi oppression, directing it back to the Lung. We direct with Ju Luo (Tangerine Pith) to disperse Pericardium Qi and Baokou Mo (White Cardamom Powder) to open Pericardium depression. This is an excellent formula for clearing and disseminating the Pericardium and smoothing Qi mechanism.
Wu Zhi Yi Zhi Jian (Five Juices and One Branch Decoction) – Method of Clearing and Moistening Pericardium Blood. An empirical formula by Mr. Yu.
Xian Sheng Di Zhi (Fresh Rehmannia Root Juice, Shengdihuang, 4 large ladles) Xian Mao Gen Zhi (Fresh Imperata Rhizome Juice, Maogen, 2 large ladles) Xian Sheng Ou Zhi (Fresh Lotus Root Juice, 2 large ladles) Xian Dan Zhu Li (Fresh Bamboo Sap, Zhuli, 2 large ladles) Xian Sheng Jiang Zhi (Fresh Ginger Juice, 2 drops) Zi Su Pang Zhi (Perilla Side Branches, Zisuzhizhi, 2 qian, cut into inches).
First, decoct Zi Su Pang Zhi (Perilla Side Branches) for more than ten boils. Take the clear decoction and store in a covered bowl. Mix in the five juices. Simmer in a double boiler and take warm.
[Commentary by Xiu:] After Pericardium pathogenic heat is cleared and penetrated, blood must become deficient. Often, blood deficiency generates irritability, overwhelming helplessness, discomfort in the heart, occasional expectoration of sticky saliva, groaning, and incorrect speech. Therefore, we use Xian Di (Fresh Rehmannia), Mao Gen (Imperata Rhizome), and Ou Zhi (Lotus Root Juice) as the Sovereign herbs to clear and moisten Pericardium blood. We employ Jiang Zhi (Ginger Juice) and Zhu Li (Bamboo Sap) as Minister herbs; their acrid-moist properties facilitate flow to wash away collateral phlegm. The subtlety lies in assisting with Zi Su Pang Zhi (Perilla Side Branches), which is light, clear, and dissebrates collaterals, restoring their normal state of lateral connection. This is an excellent formula for clearing and moistening the Pericardium, nourishing blood, and increasing fluids.
Zeng Jian Huang Lian Xie Xin Tang (Modified Coptis Draining Heart Decoction) – Method of Clearing and Draining Excess Fire of the Pericardium and Heart Meridian. An empirical formula by Mr. Yu, modified from Zhongjing’s formula.
Xiao Chuan Lian (Small Coptis Rhizome, Huanglian, 8 fen) Qing Zi Qin (Green Scutellaria Root, Huangqin, 1.5 qian) Fei Hua Shi (Flying Talcum Powder, Huashi, 6 qian) Dan Zhu Li (Bamboo Sap, Zhuli, 2 ladles) Xiao Zhi Shi (Immature Bitter Orange Fruit, Zhishi, 1.5 qian) Xian Ban Xia (Fresh Pinellia Tuber, Banxia, 1.5 qian) Sheng Yi Ren (Fresh Coix Seed, Yiyiren, 5 qian) Sheng Jiang Zhi (Fresh Ginger Juice, 2 drops, mixed together).
First, decoct Dong Gua Zi (Winter Melon Seed, 1 liang), Si Tong Cao (Strawberry Vine Stem, 2 qian), and Deng Xin (Juncus Effusus, 5 fen) to make a decoction as water substitute. Add Xian Shi Chang Pu Ye (Fresh Acorus Leaf, 1.5 qian, rubbed熟 and mixed raw).
[Commentary by Xiu:] Lung and Stomach phlegm-fire and damp-heat internally obstructing the Heart Meridian and Pericardium often lead to unconsciousness, delirium, and mental restlessness. The tongue coating is yellow and greasy, differing from the crimson tongue with unconsciousness due to Heart blood deficiency and dryness. Therefore, we use Lian (Coptis), Qin (Scutellaria), Zhi (Immature Bitter Orange), and Ban Xia (Pinellia); their bitter-acrid descending nature removes phlegm-fire as the Sovereign herbs. We employ Hua (Talcum), Yi (Coix), Gua (Winter Melon Seed), and Tong (Strawberry Vine Stem); their cool-bland nature drains dampness as Minister herbs. We assist with Jiang Zhi (Ginger Juice) and Zhu Li (Bamboo Sap), acrid-moist to wash away phlegm. The subtlety lies in directing with Chang Pu (Acorus) and Deng Xin (Juncus Effusus), aromatic and bland to benefit orifices, unblock the spirit, and descend Heart fire. This is an excellent formula for draining the Heart, unblocking collaterals, eliminating phlegm, and draining dampness.
Dao Chi Qing Xin Tang (Guide Outward Redness Clearing Heart Decoction) – Method of Clearing and Descending Deficient Heat of the Pericardium and Heart Meridian. An empirical formula by Mr. Yu, modified from Dao Chi Xie Xin Tang.
Xian Sheng Di (Fresh Rehmannia Root, Shengdihuang, 6 qian) Chen Fu Shen (Cinnabar-infused Poria Spirit, Fushen, 2 qian) Xi Mu Tong (Akebia Stem, Mutong, 5 fen) Yuan Mai Dong (Original Ophiopogon Tuber, Maidong, 1 qian, dyed with Cinnabar) Fen Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex, Mudanpi, 2 qian).
Yi Yuan San (Benefit Origin Powder, 3 qian, wrapped and decocted) Dan Zhu Ye (Light Bamboo Leaf, 1.5 qian) Lian Zi Xin (Lotus Plumule, 30 branches, mixed in) Chen Sha Ran Deng Xin (Cinnabar-dyed Juncus Effusus, 20 branches) Ying Bai Tong Bian (Clear White Child’s Urine, 1 cup, mixed in).
[Commentary by Xiu:] When heat sinks into the Heart Meridian and internally steams the Pericardium, the tongue is crimson, consciousness is clouded, and urine is scant, astringent, red, and hot. The heat must be allowed to exit via urination because the Heart and Small Intestine are exterior-interior related. However, a crimson tongue without coating and without phlegm-fire indicates blood deficiency with excessive heat. Therefore, we use Xian Di (Fresh Rehmannia) to cool Heart blood and drain Heart fire, and Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex) to clear collateral blood and drain collateral heat as the Sovereign herbs. However, the heat must have an exit route for the heat in the Pericardium and Heart Meridian to be clearly descended. Thus, we employ Fu Shen (Poria Spirit), Yi Yuan San (Benefit Origin Powder), Mu Tong (Akebia Stem), and Zhu Ye (Bamboo Leaf) as Minister herbs to guide the heat out via urination. We assist with Mai Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber) and Deng Xin (Juncus Effusus), both dyed with Cinnabar; one nourishes Stomach fluids to clear-nourish Heart Yin, the other unblocks urination to directly clear consciousness. The subtlety lies in directing with Tong Bian (Child’s Urine) and Lian Xin (Lotus Plumule), salty-bitter reaching downward, interacting to balance Heart and Kidney to rapidly descend heat. Thus, when urine is clear and flowing, the heat in the Pericardium and Heart Meridian descends completely, and the spirit becomes clear. This is an excellent formula for clearing-descending deficient heat and guiding fire downward. If consciousness remains clouded after two or three hours, mix in 1 fen of Xi Huang (Calculus Bovis) to clear the spirit, which is particularly good.
Qing Gan Da Yu Tang (Clear Liver Reach Stagnation Decoction) – Method of Clearing and Dispersing Liver Stagnation. An empirical formula by Mr. Yu, modified from Jia Wei Xiao Yao San.
Jiao Shan Zhi (Charred Gardenia Fruit, Zhizi, 3 qian) Sheng Bai Shao (Fresh White Peony Root, Baishao, 1.5 qian) Gui Xu (Angelica Sinensis Rootlets, Guixu, 1 qian) Chuan Chai Hu (Szechwan Lovage Rhizome, Chaihu, 4 fen) Fen Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex, Mudanpi, 2 qian) Qing Zhi Gan Cao (Light Roasted Licorice Root, Gancao, 6 fen) Guang Ju Bai (Tangerine Albedo, Jubai, 1 qian) Su Bo He (Perilla Mint, Bohe, 4 fen, mixed in) Chu Ju Hua (Chuzhou Chrysanthemum, Juhua, 1.5 qian) Xian Qing Ju Ye (Fresh Green Tangerine Leaf, 5 leaves, shredded).
[Commentary by Xiu:] The Liver prefers smooth and free flow; when free, there is no disease. The commonly referred "Liver Qi Disease" all begins with Liver stagnation failing to extend. Stagnating in the chest and hypochondrium causes chest fullness and hypochondriac pain. Stagnating in the intestines causes abdominal fullness and pain. Severe cases desire defecation but cannot, or if they do, it is not smooth. Therefore, we use Danxi’s Xiao Yao San method to soothe the Liver and reach stagnation as the Sovereign herb. However, Qi stagnation often transforms into heat. Danxi said: "Excess Qi is Fire." Therefore, we employ Zhi (Gardenia), Dan (Moutan), and Chu Ju (Chrysanthemum) as Minister herbs to clear and drain Liver fire. We assist with Qing Ju Ye (Green Tangerine Leaf), aromatic and dispersing, to assist Chai Hu (Szechwan Lovage) and Bo He (Mint) in reaching stagnation. This is an excellent formula for clearing Liver fire, draining heat, dispersing stagnation, and disseminating Qi. For those with violent anger and excessive Qi, add Zhi Xiang Fu (Processed Cyperi Rhizome, 3 qian) and Cu Chao Qing Pi (Vinegar-fried Immature Bitter Orange Peel, 8 fen) temporarily to calm Qi and subdue the Liver. For borborygmus and undigested food diarrhea, add Wu Mei Tan (Charred Mume Fruit, 3 fen) and Bai Jiang Can (White Silkworm, 1.5 qian) to ascend-intestine Qi and vent the Liver. For hernia swelling and pain, add Xiao Hui Xiang (Small Fennel, 2 fen), Chao Ju He (Fried Tangerine Seed, 3 qian), and Chao Xiang Li Zhi He (Fragrant Fried Lychee Seed, 1.5 qian) to disperse Liver Qi and relieve pain. For severe abdominal pain due to damp-heat and food stagnation, add Ju Fang Yue Ju Wan (Bureau Formulary Yueju Pill, 3 qian) to smooth six depressions and stop pain.
[Commentary by Lian:] The Xiao Yao San method nourishes blood and soothes the Liver, especially frequently used in gynecology. For example, removing Zhi (Gardenia) and Dan (Moutan) from this formula, adding Zhi Xiang Fu (Processed Cyperi Rhizome, 2 qian) and Su Dan Shen (Salvia Miltiorrhiza, 3 qian) to regulate Qi and invigorate blood, Fei Boxiong recommends as the general formula for regulating menstruation. For delayed menstruation due to blood-Qi deficiency-cold, add Lu Jiao Jiao (Deer Antler Glue, 3 fen, mixed with clam powder and fried loose) and Yao Gui Xin (Cinnamon Bark Heart, 3 fen) to warm the Liver and meridians. For blood collateral stagnation, add Zhen Xin Jiang (True New Crimson Silk, 1.5 qian), Xuan Fu Hua (Inula Flower, 3 qian, wrapped), and Guang Tao Ren (Smooth Peach Kernel, 9 grains) to invigorate collaterals and regulate menstruation. For early menstruation due to blood-heat, add Xian Sheng Di (Fresh Rehmannia, 4 qian), Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex, 2 qian), and Shuang Sang Ye (Frost Mulberry Leaf, 2 qian) to cool blood and clear meridians. For blood-heat with fluid deficiency, add Sheng Di (Rehmannia, 4 qian), Sheng Yu Zhu (Fresh Polygonatum Odoratum, 3 qian), and Chen Sha Ran Mai Dong (Cinnabar-dyed Ophiopogon, 2 qian) to nourish blood and increase fluids, ensuring sufficient blood for natural regulation. For amenorrhea due to collateral stasis, add Da Huang Zhe Chong Wan (Rhubarb and Ground Beetle Pill, 3 qian, swallowed or wrapped in silk and decocted). For mild cases, simply use Yi Mu Gao (Motherwort Paste, 5 qian, mixed in) to eliminate stasis and unblock amenorrhea. For blood depletion, add Qi Ju Liu Wei Wan (Lycium, Chrysanthemum, and Six-Ingredient Pill, 4 qian, wrapped in silk and decocted) and Chen E Jiao (Old Donkey-hide Gelatin, 1.5 qian). In the original formula, Chai Hu (Szechwan Lovage) is stir-fried with Turtle Blood, remove Bo He (Mint), replace with 2 Rose Flowers (mixed in). Only for women with unfulfilled emotional desires, wiry pulse extending beyond the Cun position, amenorrhea or irregular menstruation, add Zhi Xiang Fu (Processed Cyperi Rhizome, 2 qian), Ze Lan (Lycopus Herb, 3 qian), Xian Sheng Di (Fresh Rehmannia, 5 qian), and Guang Yu Jin (Curcuma Rhizome, 3 qian, pounded) to harmonize Liver and regulate Spleen, clear Heart and open stagnation. For metrorrhagia or leukorrhea due to anger injuring the Liver with excessive Qi, add Zhi Xiang Fu (Processed Cyperi Rhizome, 3 qian) and Cu Chao Qing Pi (Vinegar-fried Immature Bitter Orange Peel, 1 qian) to subdue Qi and calm it. For blood-heat, add Xian Sheng Di (Fresh Rehmannia, 5 qian), Jiao Shan Zhi (Charred Gardenia, 3 qian), and Xian Mao Gen (Fresh Imperata Rhizome, 40 branches) to cool blood and clear it. For extreme uterine pain with inability to extend limbs due to damp-fire pouring downward, add Long Dan Cao (Gentiana Root, 8 fen), Qing Zi Qin (Green Scutellaria, 2 qian), and Qing Lin Wan (Qinglin Pill, 3 qian, wrapped) to urgently drain damp-fire and restore order. Externally, mix Xi Sheng Di (Fine Fresh Rehmannia, 3 qian), Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis, 2 qian), Sheng Bai Shao (Fresh White Peony, 1.5 qian), Chuan Xiong (Szechwan Lovage, 1 qian), and Ming Ru Xiang (Transparent Frankincense, 1 qian), pound into a cake, insert into vagina to relieve pain. For vaginal itching due to damp-heat generating parasites, add Long Dan Cao (Gentiana Root, 1 qian), Chuan Lian Zi (Szechwan Chinaberry Fruit, 1.5 qian), and She Chuang Zi (Cnidium Fruit, 1.5 qian, salt-water fried) to kill parasites and stop itching. Externally, grind Tao Ren (Peach Kernel) and Guang Xing Ren (Smooth Apricot Kernel, 9 grains each) with Xiong Jing (Realgar Essence, 2 fen) into a paste, dip in rooster liver, insert into vagina. Parasites enter the liver, drawn out externally, stopping itching. For vaginal ulcers oozing fluid, suspect syphilis. Add Tu Fu Ling (Smilax Glabra Rhizome, 4 qian), Chao Hei Chou (Fried Black Morning Glory Seed, 2 qian), Du Niu Xi (Dog Achyranthes Root, 5 qian), and Sheng Chuan Bai (Fresh Coptis Rhizome, 8 fen) to clear and resolve syphilis. Externally, use utine cotton plug inserted into vagina, wash uterus frequently with boric acid water to clear toxic fire. For blood-wind sores, eruptions all over body resembling erysipelas, itchy or painful, becoming sores upon scratching, mostly due to wind-dampness and blood dryness, add Xian Sheng Di (Fresh Rehmannia, 5 qian) and Xiao Chuan Lian (Small Coptis, 8 fen) to cool blood, moisten dryness, clear-disperse wind-dampness.
