Treats women in the postpartum period who, due to exposure during childbirth, contract wind pathogen. If they suffer from vexatious heat in the four limbs and headache, administer Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction). If there is no headache, this formula (Qianjin San Wu Huang Qin Tang) is the primary treatment.
Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, 1 liang), Ku Shen (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix, 2 liang), Gan Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata, 4 liang).
These three herbs are boiled in six sheng of water until two sheng remain. Take one sheng warm. It may cause vomiting or purging of many worms.
Song says: Women exposed to wind after childbirth; if the head does not hurt, the syndrome can be detailed. For limbs suffering only from vexation, one liang of Huang Qin, four liang of Di Huang, and two liang of Ku Shen are excellent.
Disciple Lin Lifeng notes: Qianjin Fang states that "women in grass mats" refers to the time of recent delivery. After recent delivery, blood is deficient. The Jueyin Liver channel governs storing blood. Blood deficiency leads to rebellion of Jueyin Qi. The four limbs are the root of all Yang meridians; when two Yangs clash, it causes extreme vexatious heat in the four limbs. If accompanied by headache, it indicates wind pathogen moving from the Zang organs to the Fu organs, showing a tendency to exit outward. Therefore, Xiao Chai Hu Tang is given to unblock the pivot mechanism, allowing the pathogen to exit from the Shaoyang half-exterior half-interior. If there is no headache but only vexation, it indicates wind pathogen stagnating internally, disturbing the heat of the Pericardium. Excessive fire in the Pericardium inevitably damages blood. Thus, the primary treatment uses San Wu Huang Qin Tang. Di Huang's sweet and cold nature with abundant juice is used to tonify the deficiency of Yin blood. Huang Qin and Ku Shen's bitter and cold nature is used to drain the heat of the Pericardium, calming the fire and extinguishing wind, restoring Yin and pacifying the Liver, thereby resolving the vexatious heat in the four limbs. Moreover, heat in the Pericardium must carry Wind Wood qi to generate worms, hence the note under the formula stating that taking it will cause vomiting or purging of many worms.
Treats postpartum weakness and insufficiency, continuous stabbing pain in the abdomen, shortness of breath, or distress from cramping pain in the lower abdomen radiating to the back, persisting for a month. Taking four to five doses per day is beneficial, promoting strength and suitability.
Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 4 liang), Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, 3 liang), Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 6 liang), Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 3 liang), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 2 liang), Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus, 10 pieces).
Decoct method: Boil the first five herbs in eight sheng of water until three sheng remain, remove dregs, then add E Jiao (Asini Corii Colla) to melt.
Song says: In tonifying formulas, use Jian Zhong Tang to regulate the Middle; four liang of Dang Gui effectively removes stasis. Postpartum weakness and various deficiencies are treated by harmonizing Ying and Wei, relieving pain, and tonifying劳伤 (labor injury).
Modification Song says: If taking the decoction transforms stasis movement into metrorrhagia, add two liang of E Jiao and six liang of Di Huang. If cold extremities occur, Sheng Jiang should be changed to Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma); use Gan Jiang to warm the Middle and stop bleeding. Dang Gui...
Disciple Lin Lifeng notes: Postpartum shortness of breath and inability to eat indicate the disease is in the Taiyin Spleen channel. Continuous stabbing pain in the abdomen or distress from cramping pain in the lower abdomen radiating to the back indicates the disease is in the Jueyin Liver channel. The condition belongs to weakness and insufficiency, so Gui Zhi Tang is used with doubled Shao Yao to assist the Spleen Qi's transport function. The stabbing pain and radiation are due to blood stasis stagnation, so Dang Gui is used to unblock condensed stasis, enabling the Spleen Qi to have the power to ascend and descend. Therefore, within one month postpartum, taking four to five doses daily is optimal. Promoting strength implies achieving tonification effects. Adding Yi Tang (Maltose) is because the Middle Earth (Spleen/Stomach) is severely deficient, so using sweet flavors tonifies the Qi of the Middle Jiao. Adding E Jiao nourishes Yin blood. Named "Nei Bu" (Internal Tonification) because postpartum weakness involves pathology biased inward. The formulas of ancient sages are meticulous and divine.
