(This passage continues from the preceding discussion on vomiting.) It treats women who have been affected by wind-pathogen for seven to eight days, presenting with alternating chills and fever that occur intermittently at regular intervals, coinciding with the sudden cessation of menstruation. This indicates heat entering the blood level, causing blood stasis and coagulation; hence, symptoms resembling malaria appear at fixed times. Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) is indicated.
It treats women complaining of a sensation in the throat as if there were a roasted meat piece stuck there. Banxia Houpo Tang (Pinellia and Magnolia Bark Decoction) is indicated.
Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 1 sheng)
Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, 3 liang)
Fuling (Poria, 4 liang)
Shengjiang (Zingiberis Recens Rhizoma, 5 liang)
Suye (Perillae Folium, 2 liang)
Take these five herbs, decoct them in one dou of water until four sheng of liquid remain. Divide into four warm doses: three during the day and one at night.
Song verse:
The sensation resembles roasted meat stuck in the throat,
Actually caused by phlegm stagnation and qi obstruction.
One sheng of Banxia, four liang of Fuling,
Five liang of Shengjiang, two liang of Houpo.
Annotation by Nan Yuanxi: The throat is the extreme upper part of the body, while the lower abdomen is the extreme lower part. The sensation of roasted meat stuck in the throat indicates pathology in the upper region; Ben Tun Qi (Roving Piglet Qi) originating from the lower abdomen indicates pathology in the lower region.
The description "as if there were a roasted meat piece" corresponds to the "tie tie" sensation in the throat described in *Qian Jin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold), where it cannot be swallowed down nor spat out. In modern terminology, this is known as Mei He Qi (Plum-pit Qi). Banxia Houpo Tang is prescribed; in this formula, Banxia descends rebellious qi, Houpo resolves qi knotting, and Fuling eliminates phlegm. Particularly ingenious is the use of Shengjiang to clarify the mind, support healthy qi, and expel pathogenic factors, combined with the pungent and aromatic properties of Ziyisu to disperse stagnant qi. Once the stagnation disperses and qi flow regulates, how can the coagulated phlegm and qi not resolve? Later generations modified the dosages of this formula to treat chest and abdominal fullness, stuffiness, nausea, and vomiting, naming it Qi Qi Tang (Seven Qi Decoction), used for diseases caused by the Seven Emotions.
It treats women suffering from Zang Zao (Visceral Dryness Agitation), characterized by sorrowful weeping, mental agitation resembling spirit possession, frequent yawning, and stretching. Gan Mai Da Zao Tang (Licorice, Wheat, and Jujube Decoction) is indicated.
Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 3 liang)
Xiaomai (Tritici Fructus, 1 sheng)
Dazao (Jujubae Fructus, 10 pieces)
Take these three herbs, decoct them in six sheng of water until three sheng of liquid remain. Divide into three warm doses. This formula also tonifies Spleen qi.
Song verse:
Women with Visceral Dryness desire to weep in sorrow,
As if possessed by spirits, sighing long and often. (Frequent yawning and stretching)
One sheng of Xiaomai, three liang of Gancao,
Ten pieces of Dazao provide equivalent strength.
Wei Nianting stated: Contemporary physicians compete in advocating nourishing yin and blood, yet they fail to realize that excessive yin leads to further depletion of fluids, while deficient yang leads to increased dryness of yin. This formula represents the fundamental principle for treating Visceral Dryness.
