Treats cough accompanied by Qi rebellion (rebellious Qi) and a sound in the throat resembling that of a water chicken (frogs). This formula is indicated.
Shegan (Radix Belamcandae, 3 liang), Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae, 4 liang), Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens, 4 liang), Xixin (Radix Asari, 3 liang), Ziwan (Herba Asteris Tatarici, 3 liang), Kuandonghua (Flos Farfarae, 3 liang), Dazao (Fructus Jujubae, 7 pieces).
The above nine ingredients are decocted with one dou two sheng of water. First, boil Mahuang for two boils, remove the foam on the surface, then add the remaining herbs. Decoct until three sheng of liquid remains. Divide into three warm doses.
Song says:
Cough and rebellious Qi with the sound of a water chicken in the throat;
Three liang each of Gan (Shegan), Xin (Xixin), Kuan (Kuandonghua), Wan (Ziwan) move the Qi.
Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae Preparata) half sheng, seven grains of Zao (Dazao);
Jiang (Shengjiang) and Ma (Mahuang) four liang each break the firm fortress.
The above formula primarily acts to Warm (Wen), while this formula primarily acts to Disperse (San).
You Zaijing states: Cough with rebellious Qi occurs because pathogens in the Lung prevent Qi from descending, causing it to rebel upwards. Cold-fluid retention in the Lung ascends into the throat and is agitated by respiratory Qi, producing the sound.
Treats cough with rebellious Qi, frequent expectoration of turbid phlegm, where the patient can only sit upright and cannot lie down. This pill is indicated.
Zaojiao (Fructus Gleditsiae Sinensis, 8 liang, scraped of skin, roasted with su [animal fat]).
The above single ingredient is powdered. Honey pills the size of wutong seeds are made. Take three pills per dose, harmonized with Zao Gao (Date Paste) and soup. Administer three times during the day and once at night.
Song says:
Turbid phlegm rebels upward, Qi surges, sitting makes sleep difficult;
The abscess tendency is about to form, obstruction is severe and hard.
Zaojiao honey pills adjusted with Zao (date paste) taken down;
Precautions must be taken before the rain (metaphor for early intervention).
Commentary: Phlegm has a solid and unyielding nature; therefore, Zaojiao is used to open obstructions and cleanse filth, while Zao Gao is used to calm Stomach Qi. Expelling pathogens does not detach from protecting the healthy Qi.
Treats cough with a floating pulse. This formula is indicated.
Noupu (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis, 5 liang), Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae, 4 liang), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, size of a chicken egg), Xingren (Semen Pruni Armeniacae, half sheng), Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae Preparata, half sheng), Ganjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis, implied quantity based on context/standard text often matches others or specific ratio, here text cuts off but song implies standard composition), Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis, implied), Xixin (Radix Asari, implied), Xiaomai (Fructum Tritici Levis, 4 sheng). *Note: The source text lists "Shang Jiu Wei" (Above nine flavors) but the list provided in the prompt snippet for this formula seems truncated or implicit in the song. Based on standard Shanghan Lun/Jin Gui Yao Lue text for Noup Mang Huang Shi Gao Tang, the ingredients are Noup, Mahuang, Shigao, Xingren, Banxia, Ganjiang, Wuweizi, Xixin, Xiaomai.*
The above nine ingredients are decocted with one dou two sheng of water. First, boil Xiaomai until cooked, remove the dregs, then add the other herbs. Decoct until three sheng of liquid remains. Take one sheng warm per dose, three times daily.
Song says:
Xingren and Banxia half sheng each;
Xiaomai four sheng, Mahuang four liang, Noup five liang are good.
Jiang (Shengjiang/Ganjiang mix implied or specific dosage), Xin (Xixin) three liang, Shigao (Gypsum) size of chicken egg;
Floating pulse, cough and wheezing, this formula is appropriate.
Yu Xi commentary: Cough with a floating pulse indicates internal fluid retention and external pathogens. External pathogens stir up internal fluids; fluid Qi rebels upward, covering the Yang of the Heart and Lung. Mahuang releases the exterior and expels pathogens; Ganjiang, Wuweizi, Banxia, and Xixin transform phlegm and clear fluids; Xiaomai protects the Heart Sovereign. However, external pathogens can be dispersed by acrid-warm herbs, and internal fluids are resolved accordingly. Especially wonderful is boiling Xiaomai first.
Students should carefully contemplate and recognize this, to grasp its essence.
