These conditions can all lead to swelling, bi-syndrome (painful obstruction), and numbness of the limbs, difficulty in flexion and extension of joints, and counterflow qi ascending. Is this merely caused by pathogenic water-dampness? Alum (Bai Fan) has a sour and astringent taste and a drying nature; it can eliminate dampness, reduce swelling, and constrain counterflow qi. However, when jiaogixing (Hongxiangjiao / Beriberi) attacks the heart, it represents Water overcoming Fire. Is this a trivial matter?
Supplementary Formulas
Gujin Luyan Xuming Tang (Ancient and Modern Record-Verified Reviving Decoction): Treats stroke fei-bing (paralytic stroke), where the body cannot control itself, speech is impaired, consciousness is clouded with no awareness of pain locations, or there is stiffness preventing turning over.
Ingredients: Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄), Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi, 桂枝), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, 当归), Ginseng Radix (Renshen, 人参), Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao, 石膏), Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Ganjiang, 干姜), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) [each 3 liang], Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome (Chuanxiong, 川芎) [1.5 liang], Prunus Armeniaca Semen (Xingren, 杏仁) [40 pieces].
Process these nine ingredients with one dou of water, decoct to obtain four sheng. Take one sheng warm. It should induce slight sweating. Cover the spine thinly, sit leaning on a table. When sweat appears, the disease will be cured. If no sweat, administer again. Avoid wind. This formula also treats cough with counterflow qi, inability to lie flat, and edema of the face and eyes.
[Commentary]: Patients with fei-bing suffer because Ying and Wei Qi and Blood fail to nourish the interior and exterior, resulting in bodily dysfunction, joint immobility, and mental unrest. However, this condition presents as either deficiency or excess. Deficiency arises from improper diet, sexual exhaustion, or emotional disturbances; as stated in the *Neijing*, "internal depletion leading to厥 (syncope/numbness) results in aphasia and fei." Excess arises from contraction of Wind, Cold, Summerheat, or Dampness. Treating deficiency with methods for excess will further scatter Qi and Blood. This formula treats excess pathogens. Therefore, Mahuang serves as the sovereign herb, assisted by Ganjiang to open cold-bi, Shigao to resolve wind-bi, Danggui to harmonize blood, Renshen to tonify Qi, and Chuanxiong to move blood and disperse wind. The concurrent treatment of cough with counterflow qi and facial edema is also attributed to Wind-Cold.
Qianjin Sanhuang Tang (Thousand Gold Three-Yellow Decoction): Treats stroke-induced stiffness and spasm of hands and feet, pain in all joints, irritability and heat, mental confusion with aversion to cold, and anorexia persisting for days.
Ingredients: Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄) [5 fen], Actaeaes Radix (Duhuo, 独活) [4 fen], Asari Radix (Xixin, 细辛) [2 fen], Astragali Radix (Huangqi, 黄芪) [2 fen], Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 黄芩) [3 fen].
Process these five ingredients with six sheng of water, decoct to obtain two sheng. Divide into three warm doses. The first dose induces slight sweating; the second induces profuse sweating. Add Rhubarb (Dahuang, 大黄) 2 fen if there is heart heat; add Immature Bitter Orange (Zhishi, 枳实) one piece for abdominal fullness; add Ginseng (Renshen, 人参) 3 fen for counterflow qi; add Oyster Shell (Muli, 牡蛎) 3 fen for palpitations; add Trichosanthis Radix (Gualougen, 栝楼根) 3 fen for thirst; add Aconite Root (Fuzi, 附子) one piece if there is pre-existing cold.
Jin Xiao Fang Zhu Fu Tang (Near-Efficacy White Atractylodes and Aconite Decoction): Treats dizziness and vertigo with heavy head due to Wind-deficiency, severe distress impairing taste, warming muscles, tonifying the Middle Jiao, and benefiting Essence and Qi.
Ingredients: Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu, 白术) [2 liang], Prepared Aconite Root (Fuzi, 附子) [one and a half pieces, processed and peeled], Processed Licorice Root (Zhi Gancao, 炙甘草) [1 liang].
Cut these three ingredients. For each dose of five qianbi of powder, add five slices of fresh ginger and one jujube. Decoct with one and a half cups of water until reduced to seven-tenths. Strain and take warm.
Cui Shi Ba Wei Wan (Cui's Eight-Ingredient Pill): Treats Hongxiangjiao (Beriberi) ascending into the lower abdomen causing numbness.
Ingredients: Prepared Rehmannia Root (Shu Dihuang, 熟地黄) [8 liang], Cornus Officinalis Fruit (Shanzhuyu, 山茱萸), Dioscorea Rhizome (Shanyao, 山药) [each 4 liang], Alisma Rhizome (Zexie, 泽泻), Poria (Fuling, 茯苓), Moutan Cortex (Mudanpi, 牡丹皮) [each 3 liang], Cinnamon Bark (Rougui, 肉桂), Prepared Aconite Root (Pao Fuzi, 炮附子) [each 1 liang].
Powder these eight ingredients. Mix with refined honey to form pills the size of wutong seeds. Take fifteen pills with wine, twice daily.
Qianjin Fang Yuebi Jia Shu Tang (Thousand Gold Formula: Yuebi Plus Atractylodes Decoction): Treats extreme muscle pathology; heat causes fluid depletion, opening of couli (pores), and profuse sweating; attributable to Wind pathogen, with weakness in the lower limbs.
Ingredients: Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄) [6 liang], Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao, 石膏) [half jin], Fresh Ginger Root (Shengjiang, 生姜) [2 liang], Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) [2 liang], Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu, 白术) [4 liang], Jujube (Dazao, 大枣) [15 pieces].
Process these six ingredients with six sheng of water. First decoct Mahuang, removing the foam on top. Then add the remaining herbs. Decoct to obtain three sheng. Divide into three warm doses. If there is aversion to wind, add one processed Aconite Root (Pao Fuzi, 炮附子).
