Academician Xu stated: "I have suffered from this disease for thirty years. I have collected nearly fifty formulas for treating lower gastrointestinal bleeding. Some were effective, some ineffective; some effective initially but later ineffective; some seemingly ineffective at first but effective upon re-administration. It is difficult to list them all. Generally, this disease varies in type, but it is easily cured if the formula matches the disease. For example, bright red blood from the lower part indicates Changfeng (Intestinal Wind); turbid blood with dark color indicates Zangdu (Visceral Toxin); blood shooting out like a thread from the anus indicates Maizhi (Vascular Hemorrhoid). There is also a condition where deficiency in the lower part causes Yang Qi to fail to ascend, and Blood descends following Qi. Zhang Zhongjing said: 'A pulse that is wiry and large: wiry indicates reduction, large indicates hollow (Kou). Reduction implies Cold, hollow implies Deficiency. Cold and Deficiency combining is named Ge Pulse (Leather Pulse). In women, this presents as miscarriage with persistent bleeding; in men, as loss of Blood and Essence. This describes lower deficiency with lower bleeding. If the Ge Pulse is present, warming and tonifying medicines are appropriate. For Chongzhi (Worm Hemorrhoid), fumigation is suitable; *Qianjin Fang* recommends using Shepi (Snake Skin) and Aicao (Artemisia argyi), which is excellent. I once prepared this preparation, and it was quite effective.'"
