When Dongyuan supervised the tax office at Jiyuan, during the long summer, many epidemic diseases occurred. Initially, patients felt aversion to cold and heaviness of the body, then the condition spread to severe swelling of the head and face, eyes unable to open, shortness of breath from above, throat obstruction, dry tongue and mouth. People called it "Big Head Heavenly Travel." Relatives avoided visiting, and infection often led to death. Magistrate Zhang also suffered from this. Physicians treated him with Cheng Qi Tang (Order the Qi Decoction) plus Ban Lan Gen to purge, resulting in slight relief. The next day, the condition remained unchanged. After another purge, there was still slight relief, but it could not be cured, and the condition gradually became critical. Dongyuan diagnosed and said: The upper half of the body is the qi of heaven, the lower half is the qi of earth. This pathogen resides between the heart and lungs, attacking upwards to cause swelling and pain in the head and eyes. Using Cheng Qi Tang to purge clears the excess heat in the stomach, which is punishing the innocent. How can one know to treat according to the root cause? Thus, he prescribed Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) and Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), bitter and cold, to clear heat in the heart and lungs as sovereign herbs; Yuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix), salty and slightly cold, and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), sweet and cold, to clear fire and tonify qi as minister herbs; Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Shu Niu Zi (Arctii Fructus), Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), bitter, pungent, and neutral; Ban Lan Gen (Isatidis Radix), sweet and cold; Ma Bo (Stachydis Spica) and Bai Jiang Can (Bombyx Batryticatus), bitter and neutral, to dissipate swelling and detoxify, calm wheezing as assistant herbs; Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) and Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), bitter and neutral, to circulate through the Shaoyang and Yangming meridians, allowing qi to ascend; Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), bitter, pungent, and warm, acting as a boat and oar to prevent downward flow. Taking this resulted in good recovery. He administered this prescription, saving many lives, and named it Pu Ji Xiao Du Yin Zi.
