(There are eight acupoints in total on the left and right sides.)
1. Benshen (GB13): Two points located one cun five fen lateral to Qucha (GV19), or alternatively described as directly above the ear entering the hairline by four fen. It is the meeting point of the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian and the Yangwei Vessel. It treats dizziness, stiffness and pain in the neck and nape, inability to turn the body due to pulling sensations in the chest and hypochondrium, epilepsy, and vomiting of salivary foam. Needle insertion depth is three fen; moxibustion of seven moxa cones is applicable.
2. Sizhukong (TE23): Two points, also known as Mu Kong. Located in the depression at the posterior end of the eyebrow, where the Qi of the Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian emerges. Moxibustion is contraindicated; improper application may unfortunately cause the eyes to become small or lead to loss of vision. It treats dizziness, headache with red eyes, blurred vision, wind-phlegm epilepsy, eyes rolling upward with inability to recognize people, inverted eyelashes, manic behavior with vomiting of salivary foam, which occurs without fixed timing. Needle insertion depth is three fen; retain the needle for three breaths. The reducing method should be used rather than the reinforcing method.
3. Tongziliao (GB1): Two points located five fen lateral to the outer canthus. It is the meeting point of the Hand-Taiyang Small Intestine Meridian, Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian, and Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian. It treats blindness (Qingmang), blurred distance vision, white membranes or pterygium in the eye, headache, and redness and pain at the outer canthus. Moxibustion of three cones is applicable; needle insertion depth is three fen.
4. Quanliao (SI18): Two points located at the lower border of the zygomatic bone, in the depression at the tip of the sharp bone. (There are sixteen acupoints in total on the left and right sides.)
1. Touwei (ST8): Two points located at the corner of the forehead entering the hairline, one cun five fen lateral to Benshen (GB13). It is the intersection of the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian and Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. It treats unilateral headache and blurred vision. Additionally: it treats persistent eyelid twitching due to mild wind and tearing upon exposure to wind. Needle insertion depth is three fen; moxibustion is contraindicated.
2. Kechuren (also known as Shangguan, ST7): Two points, also named Shangguan. Located anterior to the ear, on the upper border of the rising bone, where an opening appears when the mouth is open, within the pulsating artery. It is the meeting point of the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian and Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian. It treats stiffness of the lips and corners of the mouth, deafness, convulsions, drooling, dizziness, trismus (lockjaw), noise during chewing, hemiplegia due to wind, facial paralysis (deviation of mouth and eye), and tinnitus sounding like cicadas. Moxibustion of seven cones is applicable; the moxa cone should not be large, shaped using the head of a chopstick. If acupuncture is necessary, the patient should lie on their side with the mouth open to locate the point accurately. Deep needling is contraindicated. Question: Why is deep needling prohibited? Qibo answered: If Shangguan is needled too deeply, it causes yawning with an inability to close the eyes; if Xiaguan does not retain the needle for long, immediate eye-opening occurs with an inability to yawn, leading to mandibular tension. Therefore, Shangguan must not be needled deeply, and Xiaguan must not have the needle retained for a long time.
3. Xiaguan (ST7): Two points located below Kechuren (Shangguan), under the lower border of the artery anterior to the ear. An opening exists when the mouth is closed, which closes when the mouth is opened. It is the meeting point of the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian and Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian. It treats otorrhea (pus discharge from the ear), facial paralysis involving the mouth and eyes, and temporomandibular joint dislocation. The point is located with the patient lying on their side with the mouth closed. Needle insertion depth is four fen; apply the reducing method immediately upon arrival of Deqi. Moxibustion is contraindicated. For swollen gums, open the mouth and use a three-edged needle to drain pus and blood; gargling frequently with salt water prevents aversion to wind. Follow the aforementioned methods cautiously.
4. He Liao (TE18): Two points located below the sharp hairline anterior to the ear, over the transverse artery. It is where the Qi of the Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian emerges. It treats mandibular traction causing severe headache and heaviness, buzzing sounds in the ears, and swelling of the mandible and cheek. Needle insertion depth is seven fen; moxibustion of three cones is applicable.
5. Tinghui (GB2): Two points located in the depression anterior to the ear, one cun below Shangguan, within the pulsating artery, locatable by opening the mouth. It is where the Qi of the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian emerges. It treats deafness, tinnitus sounding like cicadas, sensation of food blocking the ear, and temporomandibular joint dislocation separated by one to two cun. The point is located with the patient lying on their side with the mouth open. Needle insertion depth is seven fen; retain the needle for three breaths. Apply the reducing method immediately upon arrival of Deqi; reinforcement is unnecessary. Moxibustion is also effective: five to fourteen cones daily. Repeat moxibustion after ten days according to previous reports for recovery. Avoid foods that generate wind, raw/cold foods, pork, and fish.
6. Ermen (TE21): Two points located on the raised flesh anterior to the ear, opposite the ear notch. Moxibustion of three cones is applicable.
7. Tinggong (SI19): Two points located in the ear, sized like a red bean. It is the meeting point of the Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian, Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian, and Hand-Taiyang Small Intestine Meridian. It treats deafness with a sensation of blockage, tinnitus, abdominal distension, arm pain, and aphonia. Needle insertion depth is three fen; moxibustion of three cones is applicable.
8. Jiache (ST6): Two points located in the depression at the angle of the jaw below the ear. It is where the Qi of the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian emerges. It treats trismus, mutism due to lockjaw, aphonia, jaw pain, swelling of the mandible and cheek, and neck stiffness preventing turning of the head. The point is located with the patient lying on their side with the mouth open. Needle insertion depth is four fen; apply the reducing method immediately upon arrival of Deqi. Moxibustion is also effective: seven cones daily, up to forty-nine cones. The moxa cone should be the size of a barley grain. Follow standard precautions.
