The root of scrofula (lymphatic tuberculosis of the neck) lies in the Zang organs. Its branches emerge upward between the neck and axilla. Those that float in the vessels, have not yet penetrated into the muscles, but manifest externally as pus and blood, are easy to remove. One should address the root and guide the branch, so that the pathogenic factor can be weakened. Eliminate the alternating cold and heat, carefully examine the meridian pathways to apply treatment, and insert and withdraw the needle slowly to dispel the pathogen. If the lesion is small like a wheat grain, one insertion brings relief, and three insertions cure it. For treating the cold-heat syndrome of scrofula, needle the "Cold Fu" point, which is located at the Ying-spring point outside the knee joint near Jie Xi.
The ear is the gathering place of all sinews. When the Stomach is empty, the sinews become deficient; deficiency leads to downward sinking, and the meridians become exhausted, resulting in tinnitus. Tonify the Keyu Renzhu point (Shangguan, GB13), located above the junction of the nail and flesh on the thumb (Note: Textual error in original, Shangguan is on the head). For deafness without pain, select points from the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian. For deafness with pain, select points from the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian. For complete hearing loss, select Tinggong (SI19) in the ear; for tinnitus, select the artery anterior to the ear. If the ear is painful and cannot be needled, it indicates pus within the ear. Dry cerumen may also cause hearing loss. For deafness, select the junctions of nail and flesh on the little and ring fingers (Guanzhong LI11, Yewen TE2 area), first selecting Hand points, then Foot points. For tinnitus, select the tip of the middle finger (Zhongchong PC9), treating left side with right points and vice versa, first selecting Hand points, then Foot points. For deafness, select Hand-Yangming points; if ineffective, needle the meridians leading to the front of the ear.
For stiff knees that cannot extend, treat the Jie point in the popliteal fossa. For knee pain while sitting, treat the Ji point. For knee pain or heat while standing, treat the Haiguan point. For knee pain radiating to the big toe, treat the corresponding point (Text missing). For knee pain feeling like a hidden object while sitting, treat the Guan point. For knee pain preventing flexion and extension, treat the corresponding back points. For internal牵连 pain feeling like a fracture, treat the Zhongshu point of the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. To separately treat the Ying points of the Taiyang and Shaoyin meridians for symptoms of weak, sore calves and inability to stand long, treat the Weidao point of the Shaoyang meridian, located five cun above the lateral malleolus on the fibula. The lower part of the hip bone is called Jian, the area flanking the hip is called Ji, the knee joint is called Haiguan, the bones flanking the knee are called Lianhai, below Lianhai is the auxiliary bone (Fu), above Fu is the Chengshan point (Text missing/ambiguous), above Chengshan is the Guan point, and the transverse bone at the head's posterior is the Occiput. For pain in the center of the knee, select Dubi (ST35), use a Yuanli needle to stimulate and open the acupoint. The needle should be as thick as a fine thread; needling the knee is without doubt.
When Qi of the Shaoyin meridian ascends abnormally, it causes biting of the tongue. When Qi of the Shaoyang meridian ascends abnormally, it causes biting of the cheeks. When Qi of the Yangming meridian ascends abnormally, it causes biting of the lips. Observe the primary diseased meridian and apply tonification. For heavy tongue (swelling of the sublingual tissue resembling a small tongue), needle the lingual pillar using a Pi needle.
