者,水谷之道路也;喉咙,分气之所以上下者也;会厌声音之户也;口唇者,声音之扇也;
When muscle cramps (Twitching of tendons) occur in the Yang channels, treat the Yin channels; when they occur in the Yin channels, treat the Yin channels. In both cases, use the sudden needle method (a rapid insertion and withdrawal technique for draining). For patients with muscle cramps, having them stand still can alleviate the condition.
In Jue syndrome (Syndrome of Cold Extremities/Rebellious Qi), if pain runs along the spine to the nape, accompanied by a heavy head, blurred vision (KTKT), and stiffness of the waist and spine, prick the blood collaterals of the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Channel. If the chest is full and the face swollen, lips are moist and drooling, with sudden ability to speak but potentially progressing to inability to speak, treat the Foot-Yangming Stomach Channel. If Qi rushes to the throat causing aphonia, cold hands and feet, and constipation, treat the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Channel. If there is rumbling in the abdomen due to excess cold, borborygmus, and difficulty in defecation and urination, treat the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Channel. In Jue of the Great Yang (Foot-Taiyang), there is swelling of the head and heaviness, inability to walk, leading to collapse. In Jue of the Yangming, there is disease at the vertex, urge to run, shouting, abdominal fullness, inability to lie down, red and hot face, hallucinations, and delirious speech. In Jue of the Shaoyang, there is sudden deafness, swelling of the cheeks, facial heat, hypochondriac pain, and difficulty moving. In Jue of the Taiyin, there is abdominal fullness and distension, difficulty in bowel movements, anorexia, vomiting after eating, and insomnia. In Jue of the Shaoyin, there is dry mouth, difficult urination, abdominal fullness, and heart pain. In Jue of the Jueyin, there is lower abdominal swelling and pain, abdominal distension, difficulty in urination and defecation, preference for lying down with knees flexed, and contraction and swelling of the genitals. If internal heat is excessive, apply the reducing method; if deficient, apply the tonifying method; if neither excessive nor deficient, treat by selecting points from the affected channel itself.
For treating epilepsy and convulsions involving the pulse, puncture five points on the Hand-Taiyin Lung Channel, five points on the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Channel, one point on the Luo-connecting vessel of the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Channel, one point on the Foot-Yangming Stomach Channel, and three needles at five cun above the malleolus.
For cholera-like disorder (Huoluan), puncture five points beside the Back-Shu points, as well as three points on the Yangming channel and its upper lateral aspect.
For redness and pain in the eyes starting from the inner canthus, treat the Yin Qiao Vessel.
The Yellow Emperor asked: When a person suddenly loses their voice due to extreme worry or anger, which pathway is blocked? Which Qi flows abnormally? I wish to hear the explanation for why the voice cannot be produced. Bo Shi replied: The pharynx (Yanhou) is the pathway for food and drink; the larynx (Houtong) is where Qi distributes up and down; the epiglottis (Huiyan) is the gate of sound; the lips are the fan of sound; the tongue is the mechanism of sound; the uvula (Xuanyongchui) is the lock of sound; the nasopharynx (Hangsao) is where distributed Qi exits; the transverse bone (Henggu) is controlled by Shen-Qi and primarily governs tongue movement. Therefore, when nasal discharge flows uncontrollably, it is because the nasopharynx fails to close, causing Qi to dissipate. Thus, a small and thin epiglottis allows for quick emission of Qi, easy opening and closing, and easy exhalation; a large and thick epiglottis makes opening and closing difficult, slowing Qi exit, resulting in slow speech. Sudden aphonia occurs when Cold Qi invades the epiglottis, preventing it from opening and closing properly. The Yellow Emperor asked: How should acupuncture be applied? Bo Shi replied: The Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Channel connects upward to the tongue, links to the transverse bone, and terminates at the epiglottis. By draining the blood vessels at these two locations, turbid Qi is expelled. Since the epiglottis meridian connects upward to the Ren Mai (Conception Vessel), puncturing Tianchu (CV22) allows the epiglottis to function normally.
