The Gallbladder corresponds to Jia Wood, the Liver to Yi Wood, the Small Intestine to Bing Fire, the Heart to Ding Fire, the Stomach to Wu Earth, and the Spleen to Ji Earth. The Large Intestine corresponds to Geng Metal, the Lung to Xin Metal, the Bladder to Ren Water, and the Kidney to Gui Water. The Sanjiao (Triple Burner) is also entrusted to Ren Water, and the Pericardium similarly belongs to Gui Water.
(Placing Heavenly Stems upon Yin hour)
On days of Jia or Ji, the cycle begins with Bing hour; on days of Yi or Geng, it starts with Wu hour; on days of Bing or Xin, it rises from Geng hour; on days of Ding or Ren, seek sequentially starting from Ren-Yin hour; on days of Wu or Gui, the fixed time is Jia-Yin hour. This method of pairing sixty Jiazi cycles with hours assists medical practitioners.
Human Qi and Blood do not rest for a moment; their dynamic circulation depends on respiration. During exhalation, pulse Qi moves three cun; during inhalation, it also moves three cun. In one complete breath (one Xi), the pulse moves six cun. Upon reaching two hundred and seventy breaths, the pulse has traveled sixty-seven zhang and five chi. After circulating the body four times, there remains a fraction of time. Let me clarify this remainder: in forty-five breaths, it travels two zhang and seven chi. How many breaths are required for day and night circulation? Ten thousand three hundred and fifty breaths allow the pulse to travel eight hundred and ten zhang. Completing fifty circuits through the body marks the end. This is the verse describing the pulse Qi of a healthy person. A slow pulse indicates Cold syndromes, while a rapid pulse indicates Heat syndromes; they cannot be judged by the same standard.
On Yang days and Yang hours, Qi is in front, Blood is behind, and the pulse is at the periphery. On Yin days and Yin hours, Blood is in front, Qi is behind, and the pulse returns to its origin. On Yang days and Yang hours, needle rotation is counter-clockwise (to the left); first select Yang meridians to treat Fu organ diseases. On Yin days and Yin hours, needle rotation is clockwise (to the right); treating Yin meridians cures Zang organ diseases.
(Yin does not exceed Yang, Yang does not exceed Yin)
Heaven One generates Water, Earth Six completes it. Earth Two generates Fire, Heaven Seven completes it. Heaven Three generates Wood, Earth Eight completes it. Earth Four generates Metal, Heaven Nine completes it. Heaven Five generates Earth, Earth Ten completes it.
These are the generating and completing numbers of the Five Elements in Hetu (River Map). One, three, five, seven, nine are odd numbers, belonging to Heaven. Two, four, six, eight, ten are even numbers, belonging to Earth. One, two, three represent generation. It is like parents having children: the first child, whether male or female, ranks first as 'One', hence "One-Six". The second child, whether male or female, ranks second as 'Two', hence "Two-Seven generates Fire". The rest follow this pattern. "Generating" refers to the father's initiating power; "Completing" refers to the mother's nurturing gestation.
