If one desires to cure diseases, nothing is better than using acupuncture. Skillfully manipulating the divine mechanism of the needle, the practitioner delves deeply into the profound principles of the sages. Externally utilizing bian stones and needles can eliminate pathogenic factors and assist healthy qi. The methods contain the changes of water and fire (Yin and Yang), which are difficult to fathom in their patterns, yet they have a systematic order within the guidelines. If the principles are complex and obscure, what merit will there be in applying tonification and sedation? If the methods are swift and clear, their application naturally arises from the principle of following and opposing (Ying-Sui).
For instance, when walking is difficult and movement is hindered, Taichong (LR3) is most miraculous. Renzhong (GV26) relieves stiffness and pain in the spine and back; Shenmen (HT7) removes mental dullness and foolishness. When wind pathogens invade causing neck stiffness, one should initially seek Fengfu (GV16); for dizziness and vertigo, one must seek Fengchi (GB20). For ear blockage and deafness, treat with Tinghui (GB2); for eye pain, combine with Hegu (LI4). For chest stagnation and yellowing of the body, taking Yongquan (KI1) can immediately cure it. For dizziness and red eyes, draining Zanzhu (BL2) provides convenience. Whenever two elbows are cramped, rely on Quchi (LI11) to smooth them out; for flaccidity and laziness of the four limbs, depend on Zhaohai (KI6) to eliminate them. For toothache, Lüxi (Taixi, KI3) is capable of treating it; for neck stiffness, Chengjiang (CV24) can preserve health. Toubai (SP3) guides Qi to Chong, while Yinlingquan (SP9) opens the Water Dao. For abdominal distension, seize Neiting (ST44) without delay; for muscle spasms and pain, drain Chengshan (BL57) early. Generally speaking, ankle pain is resolved by Kunlun (BL60); thigh and knee pain can be treated by Yinshi (ST32). For epilepsy and mania, rely on Houxi (SI3) for treatment; for malaria with chills and fever, depend on Jianshi (PC5) for support. Qimen (LR14) can resolve chest fullness and blood distension; Laogong (PC8) can retreat stomach reflux and heart pain, leaving no doubt. Examining Dadun (LR1) removes the unilateral hernia of the seven types of hernias, as stated by Wang Gong; Zusanli (ST36) eliminates emaciation from the five consumptions, as spoken by Hua Tuo. Indeed, Wangu (SI4) dispels jaundice, Ran Gu (KI2) drains Kidney fire; Xingjian (LR2) treats knee swelling and lower back pain, Erjian (LI2) removes elbow pain and tight tendons. For dim vision, Erjian (LI2) should be taken; for nasal obstruction and loss of smell, Yingxiang (LI20) can guide. Jianjing (GB21) removes the unbearable burden of the shoulder blades; Sizhukong (SJ23) treats severe hemicrania. For cough with cold phlegm, Lieque (LU7) is reliable; for excessive eye discharge and cold tears, Linqi (GB15) is particularly accurate. The hip bone removes residual leg pain; Shenshu (BL23) drains away lower back pain. From this, we see that Yue Ren (Bian Que) cured Corpse-Jue (Shijue) at Weihui (likely referring to a combination or specific point interaction, often associated with Baihui GV20 or similar convergence points in context of Jue syndrome), waking up instantly; Wen Bo expelled the dead fetus at Sanyinjiao (SP6), falling immediately upon needling. It is said that all pain belongs to Excess, but numbness belongs to Deficiency. Excess enters from the exterior; does Deficiency emerge from the interior? Therefore, nourish the Mother to supplement insufficiency, and drain the Child to balance surplus. Observe the twenty-seven meridians, distinguishing each clearly; according to the four hundred and forty-four diseases, remove each item by item. Thus, preventing premature death and elevating the people to an age of longevity. By judging the subtle, one illuminates the mysterious books of antiquity.
Furthermore, I have heard: for Heart and Chest diseases, seek Daling (PC7) behind the palm; for Shoulder and Back pain, hold responsible Sanli (likely Hand Sanli LI10 or Zu Sanli ST36 depending on context, here likely LI10 given proximity) before the elbow. For Cold Bi and Kidney failure, take the Earth element point of the Foot-Yangming Meridian; for umbilical-circumferential abdominal pain, drain the Water element point of the Foot-Shaoyin Meridian. For pain between the spine and behind the heart, puncture Zhongzhu (TE3) for immediate recovery; for pain under the ribs and along the sides, prick Yanglingquan (GB34) for immediate cessation. For head and neck pain, plan for Houxi (SI3) to ensure peace; for waist and foot pain, it lies in Weizhong (BL40).
Those who use needles, if they can understand these principles, will achieve the effect of eliminating pathogens merely through the turning of fingers.
This is the "Ode to Flowing and Stationary Points" (Liuzhu Zhiyao Fu). Luo Qianfu stated that Master Dou Sheng (Dou Hanqing) composed it. Now it is recorded here from the *Wei Sheng Bao Jian* (Health Treasure Mirror). What is doubtful is the old annotation: "Toothache" corresponds to the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian, not the Bladder Meridian.
