(Mania is also known as dementia; supplementary information follows)
Mania (Dian, characterized by excessive laughter and mental confusion) often presents with joy/laughter. The pathology involves the Heart, Spleen, and Pericardium (Xin Bao Luo). Symptoms come and go intermittently. The patient is often in a state of stupor and fatigue, as Yin governs stillness.
Kuang (characterized by anger and agitation) often presents with anger. The pathology involves the Liver, Gallbladder, and Stomach meridians. The patient sleeps little and feels no hunger, and may jump into pits or climb onto roofs, because Yang excess leads to fullness in the four limbs.
Renzhong [GV26] (treats abnormal laughing and crying), Jianshi [PC5], Shenmen [HT7] (treats dementia), Houxi [SI3], Shenmai [BL62], Xiajuoxu [ST39] (treats Kuang), Chongyang [ST42] (moxibustion on this point treats both Dian and Kuang for males), Gu (Bone point - likely referring to a specific bony prominence or typo for a standard point, treated here as 'Gu') (moxibustion with 20 moxa cones treats Dian).
Bind the big toes of both hands and feet together using a rope. Apply seven moxa cones at the cleft between the two toes on each side. It is necessary for the fire to reach the nail and flesh at all four points. The treatment is considered effective when the patient begs for it to stop.
Additionally, refer to Sun Simiao's Thirteen Ghost Acupoints (needle them in sequence; if there is asymmetry, needle the left side first for males and the right side first for females):
Renzhong [GV26], Shaoshang [LU11], Yinbai [SP1], Tailing [PC7], Shenmai [BL62], Fengfu [GV16], Jiache [ST6], Chengjiang [CV24], Laogong [PC8], Shangxing [GV23], Huiyin [CV1], Quchi [LI11], Zhongfeng under the tongue (Place a chopstick horizontally in the mouth to immobilize the tongue, then prick to bleed for efficacy).
Dacheng stated: Whether male or female, if the patient sings, laughs, cries, chants, speaks excessively, remains silent for long periods, becomes angry day and night, acts wildly day and night, has facial paralysis (mouth and eyes deviated), walks bareheaded and barefoot, exposes their body, or claims to see ghosts and spirits—such cases are caused by harmful insects guiding demons, maniacal ghosts, and various evil influences invading the body. When treating such conditions, one must first cultivate a joyful and harmonious atmosphere. Write talismans, stabilize the spirit, and pray to deities before performing acupuncture.
"Joyful/Harmonious" means the patient's family respects and trusts the physician, and the physician treats with sincerity. When both parties are joyful, the evil spirits are dispelled. If the host detests Bian stone therapy, talk of treatment is futile. If the physician covets wealth, they cannot be said to possess virtue.
"Writing Talismans": First, write two Taiyi Spiritual Talismans using cinnabar. One is burned to ash, mixed with wine, and administered to the patient. The other is pasted on the wall of the patient's room. While writing the talisman, recite the Small Tian Gang Mantra.
"Reciting Mantras": First, take a breath, then recite the Tian Gang Great Deity mantra: "The sun and moon rotate constantly, ascending to the Golden Pass above, descending to cover Kunlun below. Tan Lang, Ju Men, Lu Cun, Wen Qu, Lian Zhen, Wu Qu, Po Jun, Fu Bi. The great universe of heaven, penetrating even to the finest dust. Profound yellow righteous energy, hasten to my body. All fierce gods and evil killers, hasten to beneath my Kui star. Do not move, do not act. Quickly according to the law."

"Stabilizing the Spirit" means that both the physician and the patient rectify and focus their own spirit/mind.
"Praying to Deities" means that at the moment of needling, close the eyes and visualize the acupuncture technique for a while. In your mind, invoke Shennong, the Yellow Emperor, Sun Simiao, and Wei Cizang Zhenren, imagining they are present before you. Secretly say: "After my needles, let the disease not return." Then pinch the acupoint and recite the mantra: "Great is the Primal Power of Heaven, its authority connects to the divine sky. Wherever the golden needle goes, ten thousand diseases are plucked away like weeds. I obey the Supreme Lord Laojun. Quickly according to the law."
