Redness, swelling, and pain of the eyes: Caused by the prevalence of red-heat seasonal pathogens, or pre-existing eye diseases, compounded by excessive phlegm-fire. Individuals with deficient Yuan Qi (Original Vitality) are susceptible to infection and accumulation.
[Acupoints] Shangxing (DU22), Jingming (BL1), Cuanzhu (BL2), Fengchi (GB20), Hegu (LI4), Sanjian (LI3), Taiyang (EX-HN5), Mucuang (GB16), Baihui (DU20), Qian Ding (DU21), Sizhukong (TE23).
For severe pain: Shaoyang (SI1).
For mild pain: Guanchong (TE1).
Eye pain with a sensation of eyeballs protruding: Prick the spaces between the ten fingers to bleed, and select Neiguan (PC6), Neiting (ST44).
The Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian has branches that penetrate the neck into the brain; these belong to the root of the eye, named "Eye System" (Yanxi). For any suffering of head and eye pain, select Jingming (BL1) and Yuzhen (BL9).
Photophobia and aversion to heat: All caused by fire-dryness and blood-heat. If the eyes are not red or painful but only averse to light, it is due to Liver Blood deficiency, unable to transport essence to resist sunlight.
[Acupoint] Xingjian (LR2).
Redness, swelling, dryness, soreness, and ulceration spreading around the eyes: Select Jingming (BL1), Erjian (LI2), Sanjian (LI3), Hegu (LI4), Guangming (GB37).
Wind-induced orbital ulceration: Select Touwei (ST8), Quanliao (SI18).
Orbital redness and ulceration (colloquially known as "Chi Xia"): Prick the outer side of the orbit to bleed, to drain damp-heat.
Epiretinal membrane formation (Yi Mo): Epiretinal membranes arise from heat. Those resembling broken rice grains are easy to dissipate; those resembling plum blossom petals are difficult to eliminate. In cases of red-eye disease, administering too many cooling medicines and washing with water causes blood coagulation, preventing the removal of epiretinal membranes. Treatment should utilize "fa wu" (stimulating foods/substances) to move pathogenic factors, causing the epiretinal membrane to float, assisted by herbs that disperse epiretinal membranes, allowing them to disappear spontaneously. This condition is deeply rooted and cannot be cured in one session; it requires acupuncture according to method for three to four sessions.
[Acupoints] Jingming (BL1), Taiyang (EX-HN5), Yifeng (TE17), Tongziliao (GB1), Guangming (GB37), Hegu (LI4), Mingmen (DU4), Ganshu (BL18), Linqi (GB15 - for white epiretinal membranes), Cuanzhu (BL2), Yemen (TE2); Houxi (SI3 - for red epiretinal membranes).
Additionally, substances such as black pepper, leek roots, tangerine leaves, and chrysanthemum leaves can be mashed into pills, wrapped in cotton, inserted into the nose to stimulate it, and after overnight, the star-like opacities will naturally fall off.
Trichiasis and rolled eyelids (Dao Jie Quan Mao): Patients with eye diseases whose Spleen is affected by wind pathogens experience tight eyelid margins and loose skin, causing eyelashes to turn inward. Frequent wiping allows lashes to gradually invade the cornea, forming cloud-like epiretinal membranes. When medication fails, manually retract the inner orbit outward and prick to bleed for cure.
Blindness without visual perception (Qing Mang): Select Shangyang (LI1) [Left-sided symptoms treated on right, right-sided on left], Ganshu (BL18).
Night blindness (Que Mu): This is due to Liver deficiency. Wood energy is prosperous at Yin hour, extinct at Shen hour, and severely declines at You and Xu hours. At night, it begins to generate and becomes slightly strong at Mao hour. Hence, vision is dim at night and recovers at dawn.
[Acupoints] Ganshu (BL18) [Moxibustion 7 cones, subsequent needling should not cause bleeding], Jingming (BL1), Guangming (GB37), Linqi (GB15), Sanyinjiao (SP6).
Cold tears triggered by wind: Caused by exposure to wind after intoxication, or indulging in sexual activity and consuming hot-natured foods during sudden acute red-eye pain.
[Acupoints] Touwei (ST8), Jingming (BL1), Linqi (GB15), Cuanzhu (BL2), Fengchi (GB20), Yemen (TE2), Hegu (LI4), Wangu (SI4), Houxi (SI3).
If a woman engages in intercourse with a man during menstruation, foul qi may rush upward to the head and eyes, also resulting in this syndrome.
[Acupoint] Sanyinjiao (SP6).
Eyelid twitching: Select Touwei (ST8), Cuanzhu (BL2).
Hordeolum (Tou Zhen Yan): A small lump forms inside the eye. One must check if there is a fine red dot like a boil on the back. Pricking it with a needle brings immediate recovery. This resolves the stagnant heat of the Taiyang meridian.
