Heaven nourishes humans with the Five Qi (Wu's commentary: Wind Qi enters the Liver, Summer-heat Qi enters the Heart, Dampness Qi enters the Spleen, Dryness Qi enters the Lung, Cold Qi enters the Kidney. When these are not excessive or harmful, they can nourish the human body). Earth nourishes humans with the Five Flavors (Sour, Bitter, Sweet, Pungent, Salty).
The Five Qi enter through the nose and are stored in the Xin (Heart) and Fei (Lung), causing the complexion to become bright and clear, and the voice to be resonant (The Xin and Fei receive the Qi of Heaven, connecting internally to the Zang organs, generating the five colors and producing sound). The Five Flavors enter through the mouth and are stored in the stomach and intestines; the flavors are stored to nourish the Five Qi (Sour enters the Liver, Bitter enters the Heart, Sweet enters the Spleen, Pungent enters the Lung, Salty enters the Kidney; each flavor has its specific destination, and the Zang organs are nourished by them, thereby harmonizing the Qi).
When Qi is harmonized, life arises; Jin-Ye (Body Fluids) are formed mutually, and Shen (Spirit) naturally generates (Qi receives nourishment from Flavor, and Flavor nourishes Qi; Yin and Yang harmonize to transform into Jin-Ye, which interact to form Jing (Essence); when Jing is abundant, Shen naturally arises).
The Xin (Heart) is the root of life (Xin belongs to Yang, Yang governs generation, and the survival of all things depends on it), and the seat of the transformation of Shen (Xin stores Shen, and transformations occur through it). Its brilliance manifests in the face, and its filling substance is in the blood vessels (Xin governs the blood vessels; when blood is sufficient, the face shines, and the meridians are full). It is Tai-Yang (Greater Yang) among Yang, and connects with the Qi of Summer (Xin reigns in Summer, combining with Tai-Yang).
The Fei (Lung) is the root of Qi and the dwelling place of Po (Corporeal Soul) (Fei governs Qi and stores Po). Its brilliance manifests in the hair/body hair, and its filling substance is in the skin (Fei governs the skin and hair of the body). It is Tai-Yin (Greater Yin) among Yang, and connects with the Qi of Autumn (Fei reigns in Autumn; possessing Tai-Yin Qi while residing in the Yang portion, it is thus Tai-Yin among Yang).
The Shen (Kidney) is the root of hibernation and storage (Shen stores Zhi (Will), governs closure and storage, and is the place where Jing (Essence) is stored). Its brilliance manifests in the hair (Shen governs brain marrow), and its filling substance is in the bones (Shen combines with bones). It is Shao-Yin (Lesser Yin) among Yin, and connects with the Qi of Winter (Shen reigns in Winter and is also a Yin organ).
The Gan (Liver) is the root of fatigue/extremity (Gan governs the sinews; excessive movement leads to sinew fatigue, "Ba" is synonymous with "Pi" meaning fatigue). It is the dwelling place of Hun (Ethereal Soul) (Gan stores Hun). Its brilliance manifests in the nails, and its filling substance is in the sinews (Nails are the surplus of sinews). It generates Blood and Qi (Gan belongs to Wood, governs Spring, and is the beginning of generation). Its flavor is Sour, its color is Cyan/Green, and this is Shao-Yang (Lesser Yang) among Yang, connecting with the Qi of Spring (Gan resides in the East, thus it is Yang).
The Pi (Spleen), Wei (Stomach), Da-Chang (Large Intestine), Xiao-Chang (Small Intestine), San-Jiao (Triple Burner), and Pang-Guang (Urinary Bladder) are the root of the granaries (holding and receiving water and grain), the dwelling of Ying (Nutritive Qi) (Ying originates from the Middle Jiao), named as "vessels," capable of transforming dregs and transporting flavors for entry and exit. Their brilliance manifests in the white flesh around the lips (Lips are the external luster of the Pi), and their filling substance is in the muscles (Muscles are the combination of the Pi). Their flavor is Sweet, their color is Yellow, and this belongs to the category of Supreme Yin (Zhi-Yin), connecting with the Qi of Earth (This summarizes the Fu organs).
All eleven Zang-Fu organs depend on the Dan (Gallbladder) (Dan can penetrate and connect Yin and Yang).
