All wind diseases characterized by tremors and dizziness belong to the category of Liver Wood (Liver dysfunction). When healthy Qi is deficient and pathogenic factors invade, causing deviation of the mouth and eyes, this is caused by excessive indulgence in alcohol and sexual activity, as well as irregular diet. Obese individuals tend to have dampness, while thin individuals tend to have fire.
Before a stroke occurs, if there is soreness, pain, numbness, and stiffness in the lower legs and shins that lasts for a long time before resolving, this is a sign of impending stroke. At this time, moxibustion should be immediately applied to bilateral Zusanli (ST36) and Jinggu (GB39), totaling four acupoints, three moxa cones per point. Wash the affected area with water decocted from peppermint, peach leaves, and willow leaves to promote suppuration of the moxibustion wounds. If the condition improves in spring, moxibustion should be repeated in autumn; if it improves in autumn, repeat in spring.
After moxibustion, avoid raw and cold foods, pork, chicken, alcohol, wheat products, and sexual intercourse. Protect against wind exposure and avoid anger. If these precautions are not observed, even deities cannot save the patient.
For slurred speech and hemiplegia, select Baihui (GV20), the hairline anterior to the ear, Jianjing (GB21), Fengshi (GB31), Zusanli (ST36), Jinggu (GB39), Quchi (LI11), Lieque (LU7), Hegu (LI4), Weizhong (BL40), Taichong (LR3), Zhaohai (KI6), Ganshu (BL18), Zhigou (SJ6), and Neiguan (PC6). Adjust points based on the severity of the condition. Treat the left side by moxibusting the right side, and treat the right side by moxibusting the left side.
For deviation of the mouth and eye, select Hegu (LI4), Dicang (ST4), Chengjiang (CV24), Daying (ST5), Zusanli (ST36), and Neiguan (PC6). Moxibustion: 21–27 cones per point.
Another method: Use a reed tube five cun long. Insert one end into the ear canal and seal the four sides of the tube's opening with mud to ensure no air leakage. Place seven moxa cones on the other end, up to fourteen cones. Follow the same method as above for replacement treatment.
For hemifacial paralysis, select Neiguan (PC6). Treat the left lesion by selecting the right point, and the right lesion by selecting the left point. Moxibustion: 21–27 cones per point. Immediate cure is expected, which is highly effective. After moxibustion, ask the patient to blow towards a fire; if they perceive their mouth corner as straightened, this confirms efficacy.
For sudden aversion to wind, inability to speak, muscle numbness with loss of sensation, and unconsciousness, locate Shendao (GV11) below the fifth thoracic vertebra. Take the point with the patient in a prone position. Moxibustion: 300 cones. Immediate cure is expected.
For generalized pruritus resembling insect bites, intolerable, moxibustion: seven cones at Zhoujian (EX-UE10); acupuncture at Quchi (LI11) and Shenmen (HT7); acupuncture at Hegu (LI4) and Sanyinjiao (SP6).
For Li Jie Feng (painful wandering joint syndrome), select Fengchi (GB20), Jinggu (GB39), and Danshu (BL19).
For stroke with locked jaw and phlegm obstruction, producing loud sounds like sawing, moxibustion: three cones each at Guanhui (CV4) and Shenque (CV8). Also apply the "Sleeve Head Method" for asthma, detailed in the Cough section.
For opisthotonos, select Tiantu (CV22). First, needle Danzhong (CV17), Taichong (LR3), Ganshu (BL18) [or Weizhong (BL40)], Kunlun (BL60), Dazhui (GV14), and Baihui (GV20).
For stroke accompanied by ptosis and aphasia, moxibustion: seven cones each at the second and fifth thoracic vertebrae. The moxa cone size should be half that of a jujube pit. Apply simultaneously.
Physicians state there are five untreatable conditions of stroke: mouth open and unable to close, eyes closed and unable to open, hands flaccid and dropping, urinary incontinence, fish-mouth odor, panting, roaring sound in the throat, fixed gaze, and picking at clothes. These are all ominous signs.
Wind is the chief of all diseases, but its manifestations vary. It may affect the Zang organs or the Fu organs; it may involve phlegm or Qi; it may arise from anger or joy. Tracing the source reveals the harm done.
When Wind strikes the Zang organs, the patient loses consciousness, phlegm-saliva surges upward, there is roaring in the throat, limbs are paralyzed, pain sensation is lost, and speech is slurred. This is called Stroke of the Zang Organs.
When Wind strikes the Fu organs, there is hemiplegia, deviation of the mouth and eye, pain sensation remains intact, and speech is normal. This is called Stroke of the Fu Organs. First observe the body shape and organ symptoms, then examine carefully to determine treatment.
If Liver is struck without sweating, with aversion to cold and bluish complexion, it is called "Anger Strike."
If Heart is struck with excessive sweating, fearfulness, and reddish complexion, it is called "Overthinking Strike."
If Lung is struck with excessive sweating, aversion to wind, and pale complexion, it is called "Qi Strike."
If Kidney is struck with excessive sweating, cold body, and blackish complexion, it is called "Qi Exhaustion Strike."
If Spleen is struck with excessive sweating, hot body, and yellowish complexion, it is called "Joy Strike."
If Gallbladder is struck with牵连 of the eyes, deep sleep unarousable, and greenish complexion, it is called "Fright Strike."
If Stomach is struck with inability to eat, surging phlegm-saliva, and pale-yellow complexion, it is called "Post-meal Strike."
For diseases of the five Zang organs, moxibustion should be applied to the respective Back-Shu points of the five Zang organs.
For sighing and frequent sadness, select Xingjian (LR2), Qiuxu (GB40), Shenmen (HT7), Zusanli (ST36), and Riyue (GB24) [located 0.5 cun below Qimen (LR14)].
