The *Suwen* (Plain Questions), chapter "Jingui Zhenyan Lun" (Discourse on the True Sayings of the Golden Cabinet), states: Heaven has eight winds, and meridians have five winds. The *Lingshu* (Spiritual Pivot), chapter "Jiugong Bafeng Pian" (Chapter on Nine Palaces and Eight Winds), states: Da Ruofeng (Great Weak Wind), Moufeng (Conspiracy Wind), Gangfeng (Rigid Wind), Zhefeng (Broken Wind), Dagangfeng (Great Rigid Wind), Xiongfeng (Auspicious/Ominous Wind), Ying'erfeng (Infant Wind), and Ruofeng (Weak Wind) constitute the eight winds. The five winds refer to: The Liver belongs to Wood; when Wood qi is prosperous, wind is generated. The Lungs belong to Metal; when Fire qi is prosperous and punishes Metal, wind is generated; when Water is cold and Metal is chilled, wind is also generated. The Spleen belongs to Earth; when Earth is damp, wind is generated, and when dry, wind is also generated. The Heart belongs to Fire; when Fire flames upward, wind naturally emerges. The Kidneys belong to Water; when Water declines, Ministerial Fire generates wind. These are called the five winds. The eight winds originate from external invasion, while the five winds arise internally. When the eyes are injured by external wind, symptoms include discharge, tearing, redness, swelling, and pain, with astigmatism and nebulae gradually invading. If wind combines with heat, headache occurs first, accompanied by sticky and foul-smelling discharge, redness, swelling, and photophobia. If wind combines with dampness, there is excessive tearing and itching, with erosion and foul odor along the eyelid margins. If wind combines with dryness, the discharge is hard and dry with excessive tearing, and the eyelids feel tight and tense. If wind combines with cold, cold tears flow intermittently, with slight redness and photophobia. If the divine light appears white, vision becomes dim and blurred, gradually developing into internal cataracts, with intermittent pain, this is caused by blood deficiency and hyperactive fire, injuring the body with internal wind. The treatment method for exterior conditions is to disperse and induce sweating; for those combined with heat, use cool dispersal; for those combined with cold, use warm dispersal; for dampness, use sweating to resolve it; for dryness, use moistening. However, blood-nourishing agents should be used concurrently. This is what is meant by "to treat wind, first treat the blood; when blood flows, wind extinguishes itself." Regarding injuries caused by various internal winds, one must absolutely avoid lifting and dispersing methods. For individuals with severe deficiency of Qi and Blood, pathogens enter the interior and cannot be expelled through venting; thus, substantial tonification of Qi and Blood is required to drive pathogens outward. For those who chronically suffer from Yin deficiency, Jue Yang moves internally within; even slight injury to Yin requires nourishing Yin and pacifying the Liver to allow pathogens to dissipate naturally. Overuse of wind-dispelling herbs will only exacerbate heat and consume Yin. For conditions at the half-exterior and half-interior level, harmonization should be prioritized. However, external wind is easy to treat, while internal wind is difficult to eradicate. Wu Hegao stated: Drugs such as Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) and Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) can treat external wind, but they do not treat internal wind. This statement is profound. If practitioners can comprehend its meaning, they will have grasped more than half of the essence.
