Duijiao Dan (Cross-Intersecting Pill) and Siliu Dan (Four-Six Pill) can be blown into eyes suffering from pterygium or corneal opacity of many years' duration. If the opacity is flaccid, dense, and not yet firm, causing blindness to figures, Jiuyi Dan (Nine-One Pill) can be used once every three days to resolve it; the opacity will dissipate as clear as water. Once the thickness of the opacity reaches therapeutic efficacy, Duijiao Dan and Siliu Dan should no longer be used. Subsequently, Zhenzhu San (Pearl Powder) combined with Jiuyi Dan can be instilled into the eyes.
Sanqi Dan (Three-Seven Pill) is applied to eyes affected for many years. As stated in ancient texts, regardless of whether the opacity arises below or above the black pupil (cornea), or above or below the white sclera, if the opacity is extremely thick, a dilute preparation of the pill can be used harmoniously once every two days.
Erba Dan (Two-Eight Pill) manages eye conditions that have recurred over three to five years, characterized by red filaments, slight pain, itching, and dryness, with opacities presenting a red-white hue. It can be applied lightly once per night.
Jiuyi Dan (Nine-One Pill) treats recurrent eye diseases with corneal opacity. If pain is present, it can be instilled; if there is no pain, Qingliang San (Cooling Powder) combined with Jiuyi Dan should be used. For faint opacities resembling flying clouds or mist, Biyun Dan (Emerald Cloud Pill) and Qingliang San should be blown and instilled.
For cold-type eye conditions intolerant to cold-natured herbs, only Qingliang San (Cooling Powder) with a small amount of Bingpian (Borneol) and ginger powder should be instilled frequently for effective results.
For eyes unable to retain or absorb medications, if the opacity appears removable, various ointments and pills can be mixed with milk and instilled sparingly and frequently. If still rejected, pure Sanhuang Yangdan (Three-Yellows Yang Pill) without Borneol can be instilled to eliminate opacity; Chuiyun Gao (Blowing Cloud Ointment) is also indicated.
For eyes intolerant to decoctions, Yangdan (Yang Pill) without Borneol, mixed with Borax (Pengsha), can be instilled.
For eyes unresponsive to all pilular treatments, a mixture of egg white and Areca nut (Binglang) ground in cold water, applied with chicken feathers, can also reduce opacity.
For another type of eye condition not requiring pills, green salt and common salt calcined over fire, mixed with cold water, and applied with chicken feathers, can also reduce opacity.
For foreign bodies (thorns) lodged in the eye that cannot be removed, crushed scallions applied topically can help. Additionally, crushed Chinese gallnut (Wubeizi) applied over the thorn, or crushed dung beetles (Qianglang) applied topically, can facilitate the expulsion of the thorn.
Formula for Infusing Lu Ganshi (Calamina) in Medicinal Water:
Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Longdancao (Gentianae Radix), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) (each 1 liang); Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Juhua (Chrysanthemi Flos) (each 8 qian); Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Muzei (Equiseti Hiemalis Herba) (each 6 qian); Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) (1.5 liang); Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica) (5 qian); Shanzhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) (each 7 qian); Caowu (Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix) [added subsequently]; Baiziren (Biota Semen), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Mimenghua (Flos Myopsidis).
Select twenty-four fresh herbs, finely cut like hemp seeds. Place in a copper basin with four to five bowls of cold water and soak for three to four nights. In spring and summer, soak for two nights; in autumn, five days; in winter, seven days. Frequently rub with hands to extract flavors, then filter through fine cloth.
Method for Refining Lu Ganshi (Calamina):
Select calamina with layered structure, light weight, or pale sky-blue color. Crush it, fill a fired silver pot, cover upside down and right side up, and refine in a cinnabar furnace until intensely red and penetrating. Remove and quench in medicinal water. Discard the water absorbed by the calamina. Return the calamina to the fire and repeat the quenching process three times. Each time must be refined until thoroughly red; incomplete refinement may cause discoloration to black. After three quenchings, crush the calamina, soak in fresh medicinal water overnight to remove "fire toxicity," drain the water, dry, and grind into powder. Separate stones from non-stones, grinding separately. Moisten with medicinal water, dry, grind finely, and sieve through fine silk to obtain Yangdan (Yang Pill).
Method for Compounding Yindan (Yin Pill):
Refined Lu Ganshi (4 liang), Tongqing (Vermiculi Cupri Carbonas), Bai Sha (White Borax) (2.5 qian), Qingyan (Green Salt) (2.5 qian), Mituoseng (Lithargyrum) (1 qian).
Mix these five ingredients evenly with water infused from Longdancao (Gentianae Radix) and Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma). Grind in a mortar until smooth like mud. Dry and grind again before adding other herbs. Add six more ingredients:
Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) (powder, 2.5 qian), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) (powder, de-leafed, 2 qian), Caowu (Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix) (powder, 2 qian), Boheye (Menthae Haplocalycis Folium) (8 fen), Ruxiang (Olibanum) (processed, 1.5 qian), Moyao (Myrrha) (processed, 1 qian; processing method for Ruxiang follows later).
Grind these six ingredients to extreme fineness before incorporating them into the other medicines.
Subsequent Ingredients:
Pengsha (Borax) (transparent, 1.5 qian), Danfan (Chalcanthite) (3 fen), Xionghuang (Realgar) (yellow and transparent, 7 fen), Qingfen (Calomelas) (7 fen), Huangdan (Minii Oxidum Rubrum) (5 fen) (wash with water to remove sand, dry the sediment), Zhusha (Cinnabaris) (5 fen), Yanxiao (Natrii Sulfas) (5 fen), Haipiaoxiao (Sepiae Endoconcha) (calcined, avoid those with strong odor and white color, 7 fen), Baixingding (Passeris Stercus) (small sparrow droppings, soft when standing, 5 fen), Xuexie (Drachmae Sangue) (5 fen), Mingfan (Alumen) (calcined, 1 qian), Jiangfen (Zingiberis Rhizoma Pulvis) (ginger juice filtered, dried, 7 qian), Pian Nao (Borneolum Syntheticum) (small amount), Shexiang (Moschus) (small amount).
Except for Pian Nao and Shexiang which are adjusted according to circumstances, mix the remaining twenty-three ingredients thoroughly, grind to fineness, sieve through fine silk, and store in one jar. This is called Juanyun Dan (Rolling Cloud Pill), also known as Yindan (Yin Pill).
This single batch of Juanyun Dan is used based on Yin-Yang dynamics. Dosages can be adjusted by adding or subtracting components depending on the thickness of the membrane and the depth of the opacity. For old, thick opacities, increase Yindan and decrease Yangdan. For thin or newly developed opacities, increase Yangdan and decrease Yindan. This formula covers all external obstructions of the eye, proving effective in hundred trials. It is truly a precious treasure for saving the world.
Zhenzhu San (Pearl Powder): Treats all types of membrane obstructions in the eye.
Ruxiang (Olibanum) (processed), Moyao (Myrrha) (processed), Zhenzhu (Concha Margaritifera) (processed, each 1.5 qian), Pengsha (Borax) (calcined, 1 qian), Qingfen (Calomelas) (1.5 fen), Shexiang (Moschus) (7 li), Tongqing (Vermiculi Cupri Carbonas) (5 fen), Yanxiao (Natrii Sulfas) (2.5 fen), Zhusha (Cinnabaris) (1.5 qian), Pian Nao (Borneolum Syntheticum) (2 fen), Xuexie (Drachmae Sangue) (5 fen), Danfan (Chalcanthite) (2.5 fen), Kufan (Calcined Alumen) (2.5 fen), Baixingding (Passeris Stercus) (2 fen), Ruiren (Pruni Armeniaci Semen) (stored in new bamboo tube, roasted on mild heat to remove shell oil, ends sealed with paper, peeled, oil removed, ground, 2 qian), Hupo (Electrum) (test authenticity: grind a bit, burn foot on fire, turns to blue smoke, smells like pine resin, color is vermilion-red, 8 fen).
Refine into extremely fine powder. Prepare Yangdan by boiling Lu Ganshi in water infused with Tongzi Xiaobian (Boy's Urine) and Sanhuang (Three Yellows). Use as needed.
Treats photophobia, excessive tearing, and related symptoms. Combine Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) powder, Xiongdan (Ursi Fel), Niuhuang (Bovis Calculus), and Ruiren (Pruni Armeniaci Semen) in one bowl of running water. Simmer in a porcelain vessel until half remains. Filter through double-layer cotton cloth. Add two liang of honey. Simmer on mild heat until purple and stringy when lifted. Do not overcook or undercook. Store Longnao (Borneolum) and Pengsha (Borax) in a sealed porcelain vessel. Bury in earth for seven days to remove fire toxicity. Apply a small amount inside the eye using a copper applicator three times daily. Avoid wind-aggravating foods.
Lingmiao Yingtong Gao (Spiritual and Effective Pain-Relieving Ointment): Treats sudden, unbearable eye pain.
Ruiren (Pruni Armeniaci Semen) (de-skinned, de-oiled, 100 grains), Zhusha (Cinnabaris) (levigated, 1 qian), Pian Nao (Borneolum Syntheticum) (1 zi), Ruxiang (Olibanum) (date-seed size), Pengsha (Borax) (1 qian).
Grind all ingredients to fine powder. Mix with honey to form an ointment. Apply with a copper applicator. Pain stops after one or two applications.
Shenxian Bixia Dan (Immortal Emerald Cloud Pill):
Tonglv (Vermiculi Cupri Viridis) (1 liang), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (2 qian), Moyao (Myrrha) (processed, 2 fen), Shexiang (Moschus) (2 fen), Mayaxiao (Natrii Sulfas Crystallisatus) (5 fen), Ruxiang (Olibanum) (processed, 5 fen), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) (powder, 2 qian), Pian Nao (Borneolum Syntheticum) (2 fen), Baixingding (Passeris Stercus) (2 fen). One variant omits the last two ingredients.
Grind all ingredients to powder. Make pills using Huanglian paste, sized like longan seeds. Dissolve one pill in cool water for use. Instill twice daily. Effective after six applications.
Chuiyun Dan (Blowing Cloud Pill): Treats lacrimation, wind-sensitive eyes, photophobia, desire to keep eyes closed in dark rooms, and long-standing opacities obscuring vision. Frequent application yields miraculous effects.
Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Ruiren (Pruni Armeniaci Semen) (each 2 fen), Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (each 4 liang), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) (5 fen), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (each 6 qian), selected Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) (3 qian), Jingjisui (Schizonepetae Spica) (pressed concentrated juice, 1 qian), Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix) (1.5 qian).
Cut ingredients. Except for Lianqiao, boil the rest in two bowls of clean water until reduced to half a bowl. Add Lianqiao and simmer until approximately one large cup remains. Strain. Boil in a silver/ceramic vessel on mild heat until a drop forms a bead that does not disperse in water. Add a little refined honey and cook.
Chubi San (Nasal Snuff Powder):
Huangbo (Phellodendri Cortex), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma).
Boil/cook. In a jar, dry the Three Yellows together with urine (traditional processing method implied). Remove. Soak overnight in Longdancao (Gentianae Radix) water, then dry. The resulting Calamina is Sanhuang Dan (Three Yellows Pill), ready for use. Mix with the ultra-fine powder of Zhenzhu San (Pearl Powder) previously described. No further processing needed. Combine with Sanhuang Dan for use.
Zhenzhu San (Pearl Powder): Reduces opacity. Instill for thick opacities. Calcined Pengsha (Borax) must be used.
One part Sanhuang Dan (Three Yellows Pill), one part Zhenzhu San (Pearl Powder), adjust amounts of Naoshe (Borneol and Musk) and Pengsha (Borax) temporarily. For lighter dosage: one part Sanhuang Dan, one part Zhenzhu San, adjust Naoshe and Pengsha as before. For even lighter dosage: one part Yangdan (Yang Pill), one part Sanhuang Dan (Three Yellows Pill), one part Zhenzhu San (Pearl Powder). Combine these three with Naoshe and Pengsha as required.
