On the day of compounding the elixir, it is essential to choose a clear and sunny day. All herbs must be ground into an extremely fine powder and sifted repeatedly for optimal quality.
Jiu-Yi Dan (Nine-One Elixir): Composed of nine spoons of Yang Dan (Yang Elixir) and one spoon of Yin Dan (Yin Elixir).
Er-Ba Dan (Two-Eight Elixir): Composed of eight spoons of Yang Dan and two spoons of Yin Dan.
San-Qi Dan (Three-Seven Elixir): Composed of seven spoons of Yang Dan and three spoons of Yin Dan.
Si-Liu Dan (Four-Six Elixir): Composed of six spoons of Yang Dan and four spoons of Yin Dan.
The aforementioned elixirs all require the addition of Bingpian (Borneol), Shexiang (Musk), and Pingsha (Borax), which must undergo calcination (Ku Guo). Dosages should be adjusted according to clinical needs at the time of use.
For example, to prepare Er-Ba Dan: Use eight spoons of Yang Dan and two spoons of Yin Dan, add 3 li of processed Borneol, 4 li of calcined Borax, and 2 li of Musk.
To prepare Jiu-Yi Dan: Use nine spoons of Yang Dan and one spoon of Yin Dan, add 5 li of calcined Borax, 3 li of Borneol, and 1 li of Musk. This formula can stop tearing and remove corneal opacities.
Qingliang San (Cooling Powder): Consists of ten spoons of Yang Dan, 6 li of raw Borax, 3–4 li of Borneol, and 3 li of Musk. The amounts of Borneol, Musk, and Borax used for eye application should follow the dosage standards for compounding elixirs.
Bi Yun Dan (Green Cloud Elixir): Prepared by adding Tonglv (Malachite) to Qingliang San. It also requires the addition of Borneol and Musk, or a small amount of Ku Fan (Calcined Alum). This formula is used to remove ocular membranes and opacities.
Juan Yun Dan (Rolling Cloud Elixir): Refers to Yin Dan. If encountering conditions such as pterygium (eye hook) with varying pupil sizes accompanied by dizziness, the medicine can be liquefied and instilled into the eyes to resolve blood stasis.
Another elixir exists that, when applied to the eyes, can reduce corneal opacities.
Juan Yun Dan Formula: One spoon of Juan Yun Dan, half a spoon of Yang Dan, 3 fen of Ginger Powder, 0.5 fen of Fei Fan (Fly Alum/Refined Alum), and 1.5 fen of Burnt Salt. Mix these together for topical application.

First, grind all the aforementioned herbs into an extremely fine powder resembling dust. Then, add Shexiang (Musk), Bingpian (Borneol), and Ruiren (Buckthorn Seed), and grind again until uniform. Sieve the mixture through cooked silk fabric and store it in a jar. Before going to bed, use a copper tube to pick up an amount roughly the size of a rice grain and apply it to the area affected by opacity.
Bo Yun San (Cloud-Dispelling Powder)
Ingredients: Luganshi (Calamine) (calcined, 2 liang), Huangdan (Red Lead) (processed, 2 liang), Chuanwu (Aconitum carmichaelii) (1.5 liang), Xijiao (Rhinoceros Horn) (1 liang), Ruxiang (Frankincense), Moyao (Myrrh), Naosha (Sal Ammoniac), and Qingyan (Green Salt) (each 1.5 qian), Pingsha (Borax), Xuexie (Dragon's Blood), Qingfen (Calomel), and Yingshi (Hawk Excrement) (each 2 qian), Bingpian (Borneol) (5 fen), Shexiang (Musk) (5 fen), and Ruiren (Buckthorn Seed) (shelled, 1.5 qian).
