Treating diseases in the Yang aspect should be resolved through sweating. If one instead sprays or irrigates with cold water, the heat is constrained and cannot escape, leading to increased restlessness. The flesh rises (skin becomes goosefleshed). If there is a desire to drink water but no actual thirst, administer Wenli San (Clam Shell Powder). If it does not resolve, administer Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria). For Cold-Excess Jie-Xiong (Chest Binding) without Heat signs, administer Sanwu Xiaoxiongtang (Three-Ingredient Minor Chest-Piercing Decoction). Baisan (White Powder) may also be administered.
Wenli (Halitum Arcae, Clam Shell) (five liang)
Take the above single ingredient, grind into powder. Mix with boiling water and take one fangcun bi (a square-inch measure) as a dose. Use five he of water.
Song says: Using cold water spray originally exceeds the method of sweating. (Taiyang disease should be treated by sweating, but was sprayed with water.) Gooseflesh appears in the skin (Water resides in the skin). Increasing restlessness further. (Heat is constrained and internalized).
Nan Yuanxi notes: In Taiyang disease, if sweating is not induced but cold water is sprayed, the Yang Qi at the exterior retreats inward and cannot exit. The Master selects Wenli to make a powder.
Later, if there is thirst desiring water and greedy drinking, Wenli Tang (Clam Shell Decoction) is the main treatment. It also treats mild wind, tight pulse, and headache. Examining the syndrome to use the formula, then that case used powder while this one uses decoction, which is more appropriate. Attached is Wenli Tang: Wenli five liang, Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) each three liang, Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) five liang, Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum) fifty seeds, Dazao (Jujubae Fructus) twelve pieces. Boil in six sheng of water to obtain two sheng. Take one sheng warm. Sweating indicates cure.
Zhanglingshao said: The previous discussion involved internal Water binding in the chest and hypochondrium forming the Daxiantang (Major Chest-Piercing Decoction) syndrome. This discussion involves external Water entering the skin causing gooseflesh. One may clear its heat, or use acrid-hot herbs to disperse external cold. Adapting to the time and situation, nothing is inadvisable.
Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix) (three fen) Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus) (three fen) Badou (Crotonis Fructus) (one fen, remove peel and heart, roast until black, grind like fat.)
Take the above two ingredients, grind into powder. Add Badou. Further pound in a mortar. Mix with Baiyin (white rice gruel) and take. Strong individuals take half a qianbi; frail individuals reduce the dose. If the disease is above the diaphragm, vomiting will necessarily occur.
Yu Qianzhu fully records it. (This follows Neitai Fang and Zhang's section here.)
Song says: Badou roasted and ground resembles fat. Only need one fen (qù shēng - falling tone) to keep the established rule. Add Jiegeng and Beimu equally at three fen (qù shēng - falling tone). Carefully differentiate for Cold-Excess Jie-Xiong.
Wei notes: Badou is acrid and hot, capable of dispersing Cold-Excess and breaking Water-Drink. Beimu opens chest binding, Jiegeng opens Lung Qi. Not making a decoction but making a powder takes the meaning of "using powder to scatter/disperse." Drinking hot porridge assists Badou's heat to promote movement. Drinking cold porridge restricts Badou's heat to stop action.
