All types of Lin syndrome (a disease characterized by frequent and urgent urination, scanty and painful stream, incomplete emptying, and discomfort in the lower abdomen or pain radiating to the waist) are caused by Kidney deficiency. The Heart belongs to Fire, and the Kidney belongs to Water; if Water and Fire are balanced, this disease will never occur. If Water and Fire are unbalanced, Heart Fire becomes dry and scorching while Kidney Water is deficient, causing Heat to generate in the deficient Kidney, Small Intestine, and Bladder, thus giving rise to various symptoms of Lin syndrome. There are five types of Lin:
1. Gao Lin (Paste-like Lin): The urine resembles fat floating on water. This is due to Kidney deficiency failing to control the body's fatty fluids, leading to abnormal excretion.
2. Re Lin (Heat-type Lin): There is Heat in the Lower Jiao (lower abdominal region). The Heat transmits to the Kidney and flows into the Bao Luo (uterus/bladder area). The urine is yellow, with a very hot and astringent sensation during urination, sometimes accompanied by fresh blood. There is severe pain in the urethra, and in severe cases, it causes mental restlessness and confusion. Symptoms may only subside after profuse sweating throughout the body. The treatment method should involve promoting Qi circulation, promoting diuresis, clearing pathogenic Heat, and pacifying Heart Fire. When Heart Fire is cleared, urination naturally becomes smooth, and blood ceases to flow recklessly. Tonifying medicines must strictly be avoided. Tonifying Qi exacerbates distension; tonifying Blood exacerbates astringency; tonifying Heat exacerbates its intensity and pain.
3. Leng Lin (Cold-type Lin): Caused by Cold invading due to Kidney deficiency. The symptoms include chills preceding fever. Treatment should employ mild warming methods.
Main Formula for the Five Lins:
Chi Fu Ling (Red Poria), Chen Pi (Aged Tangerine Peel), Gan Shao (Licorice Root Tip), Shan Zhi (Gardenia Fruit - transforms Lung Qi), Che Qian Zi (Plantago Seed), Mu Tong (Akebia Stem), Lian Rou (Lotus Seed Meat), Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome), Kuai Hua Shi (Talcum), Zhu Ling (Polyporus), Ze Xie (Alisma Rhizome), Qu Mai (Dianthus Herb), Deng Xin Cao (Juncus Medulla), Sheng Ma (Bupleurum Root - stir-fried), Chai Hu (Bupleurum Root - stir-fried).
Modifications:
For Gao Lin, add Huang Bo (Phellodendron Bark); for Leng Lin, add Chen Xiang (Aquilaria Wood) and Mu Xiang (Vladimiria Root); for Re Lin, add Dan Zhu Ye (Lophatherum Herb) to the base formula; for Xue Lin (Blood-type Lin), add Pu Huang (Typha Pollen) and Di Yu (Sanguisorba Root); for Shi Lin (Stone-type Lin), add raw Dan Zhu Ye. In diuretic formulas, add small amounts of Sheng Ma and Chai Hu; otherwise, Qi movement will not occur.
Pediatric Bai Niao (White Urine):
This condition, where urine is white like rice washings, results from irregular diet damaging the Spleen and Stomach. Turbid Qi from the Stomach seeps into the Bladder, causing a failure to distinguish between clear and turbid substances. Treatment should focus on drying Dampness in the Middle Jiao (Spleen/Stomach).
Formula:
Hou Po (Magnolia Bark), Cang Zhu (Atractylodes Rhizome), Ban Xia (Pinellia Tuber), Zhi Shi (Immature Bitter Orange), Qing Pi (Green Tangerine Peel), Shan Zha (Hawthorn Fruit), Xiang Fu (Cyperus Rhizome), Fu Ling (Poria), Chen Pi (Aged Tangerine Peel), Gan Cao (Licorice Root).
Alternatively, for cases involving latent Heat in the Heart and Diaphragm, the treatment should clear Heart Fire and promote diuresis.
