Any method to clear heat and detoxify is best achieved with bitter and sour substances. Therefore, herbs such as *Sophorae Flavescentis Radix* (Kushen), *Celosiae Semen* (Qingxiang), *Artemisiae Argyi Folium* (Ai), *Lepidii Semen* (Tingli), vinegar (Ku Jiu), and *Mume Fructus* (Wumei) are frequently used; this is the key principle. When internal heat is excessive, it cannot be cured without bitter and sour medicines. If heat remains in the body and is not treated promptly, or if treatment does not employ bitter and sour drugs, it is like trying to extinguish a fire without water; escape from danger is impossible.
It is also said: Current treatments often rely on pungent and sweet substances, such as *Zingiberis Rhizoma* (Shengjiang), *Cinnamomi Ramulus* (Guizhi), and *Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma* (Renshen). These are expensive and difficult to obtain consistently. Seeking them during travel may lead to delays. In contrast, *Sophorae Flavescentis Radix*, *Celosiae Semen*, *Lepidii Semen*, and *Artemisiae Argyi Folium* are readily available everywhere and are superior for clearing heat and detoxifying compared to those costly herbs. Referencing previous methods and combining these remedies, for patients suffering from internal heat, one need not adhere strictly to the usual sequence of medications. Directly treating with *Celosiae Semen*, *Sophorae Flavescentis Radix*, *Artemisiae Argyi Folium*, and vinegar, merely shortening the interval between doses, ensures recovery in all cases. The Yellow Emperor asked Qibo: "Why do some people die suddenly? What evil causes this?" Qibo replied: "Those who encounter the 'Three Deficiencies' die from sudden illness. Those who encounter the 'Three Excesses' cannot be harmed by evil." The Yellow Emperor said: "I wish to hear about the Three Deficiencies." Qibo answered: "This occurs when the year's qi is declining, the moon is waning, and the seasonal harmony is lost, leading to injury by treacherous wind evils." The Yellow Emperor said: "I wish to hear about the Three Excesses." Qibo answered: "This occurs when the year's qi is prosperous, the moon is full, and the seasonal harmony is attained. Even with treacherous winds and evil qi, harm cannot occur." He asked further: "Some die suddenly and lose consciousness but later revive. What qi causes this?" Qibo replied: "When Yin qi exhausts first and Yang qi fails to enter, sudden death and unconsciousness occur. If Qi recovers, life returns." (*Waistai Mi Yao*, Vol. 28)
**Treatment for Sudden Death:**
Cases where there was prior pain or illness, or sudden collapse in daily life, resulting in abrupt cessation of breath, belong to the category of "Zhong E" (Sudden Evil Invasion).
Puncture the nose with green onion stalks until they penetrate several inches. It is ideal if blood flows from the eyes. Alternatively, blood flowing from the ears is considered good. This aligns with Bian Que's method; later texts mention blowing into the ears, while Ge Shi's method involves blowing into the nose, which is a distinct technique. (*Waistai Mi Yao*, Vol. 28)
**Another Formula:**
Puncture the ear with green onion stalks. Do not be alarmed if blood flows from the ears or nose. Lack of blood indicates difficulty in treatment; presence of blood is a sign of vitality. When the patient is about to revive, hold their hands firmly without releasing. Soon, the deceased will raise their hands to grasp at people. Stop when they speak of pain. For males, puncture the left nostril; for females, the right nostril. Insert to a depth of over seven inches. There should be no distress.
**Another Formula:**
Pour urine onto the patient's face repeatedly. They will revive. This is Bian Que's method. (*Waistai Mi Yao*, Vol. 28)
**Treatment for Sudden Death:**
Extract juice from fresh cow or horse manure and pour it into the patient's mouth, ensuring it enters the throat. If the jaw is clenched, use an instrument to force it open. If it cannot be forced open... [Text fragmentary]
**Another Formula:**
Extract juice from wild garlic (*Xie*) or leeks and pour it into the mouth and nose. (*Waistai Mi Yao*, Vol. 28)
**Another Formula:**
Take lard the size of a chicken egg and one sheng of vinegar. Boil and pour into the throat. (*Waistai Mi Yao*, Vol. 28)
**Treatment for Sudden Death with Closed Eyes:**
Mount a cow and position its face near the patient. Crush wild garlic juice and pour it into the ears. Grind soap pod (*Zao Jia*) into powder and blow it into the nose. (*Waistai Mi Yao*, Vol. 28)
**Treatment for Sudden Death with No Pulse and No Other Symptoms, Due to Exhaustion of Both Yin and Yang:**
Position a cow near the nose for two hundred breath cycles. Heat an ironing tool and apply it to both hypochondriac regions. Needle the *Jianshi* (PC5) acupoints on both hands for over one hundred breath cycles each. Moxa the *Renzhong* (GV26) acupoint. (*Waizhuan*, Vol. 20)
**Treatment for Sudden Death with Pulse and Symptoms Present, Due to Exhaustion of Yin First and Yang Later:**
Chew wild garlic and feed/pour it into the patient. (*Waistai Mi Yao*, Vol. 28)
**Treatment for Sudden Death:**
Take soot from the stove, sized like a pellet, mix with grain water, and drink. Administer three to four doses within a short period. (*Yi Xin Fang*, Vol. 14)
**Another Formula:**
Collect dust from the roof beams, sized like soybeans, place in a bamboo tube, and blow into the nose simultaneously. (*Yi Xin Fang*, Vol. 14)
**Another Formula:**
Moxa the *Danzhong* (CV17) acupoint. (*Yi Xin Fang*, Vol. 14)
**Another Formula:**
Blow air into both ears using a bamboo tube, no more than three times. (*Yi Xin Fang*, Vol. 14)
