For the recurrence of illness due to overexertion after recovery from a major disease, use the Zhishi Zhizi Tang (Bitter Orange and Gardenia Decoction) formula.
Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange, three pieces, processed by roasting) Zhizi (Gardenia Fruit, fourteen pieces, broken open)
Take the above two herbs, add one dou of vinegar juice, first decoct until six sheng remain, then add the herbs and decoct until three sheng remain. Add Chi Xiao Dou (Prepared Soybean, one sheng), boil for five or six boils, filter out the dregs, divide into two doses, take orally, and cover with blankets to induce sweating. If there is retained food stagnation, add Dahuang (Rhubarb Root and Rhizome) the size of a chess piece. (From *Waitai Miyao*, Vol. 2)
For recurrence due to overexertion, use the Daqing Tang (Great Cyan Decoction) formula.
Daqing (Qing Dai Plant, four liang) Gancao (Licorice Root, two liang, processed by roasting) Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin, two liang, processed by roasting) Xiangchi (Prepared Soybean, two liang)
Cut the above four herbs, add one dou of water, decoct until three sheng remain, filter out the dregs, take one sheng warm, five to six times daily. If symptoms resolve and then recur, continue administering the decoction to maintain therapeutic levels. This formula is particularly effective for thirst or severe diarrhea. First decoct Daqing and Gancao, obtain four sheng of liquid, filter out the dregs, then add Ejiao and Xiangchi. Allow Ejiao to dissolve completely, then filter out the Xiangchi without letting it disintegrate; pre-soak Ejiao to facilitate dissolution. Avoid eating Chinese cabbage (Songcai) and seaweed. (From *Waitai Miyao*, Vol. 2)
For epistaxis occurring after minor exertion following recovery from Shanghan (Cold Damage), use the Muli San (Oyster Shell Powder) and Wan (Pill) formula.
Zuo Gu Muli (Left-facing Oyster Shell, ten fen, calcined) Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, five fen)
Grind the above two herbs into powder, administer one fangcun bi (a square-inch measure) with wine, two to four times daily. Alternatively, make honey pills the size of wutong seeds, administer fifteen pills with wine. (From *Waitai Miyao*, Vol. 2)
For near-fatal recurrence caused by rising early and exerting oneself, or excessive eating, shortly after recovering from a severe illness.
Burn Bi Jia (Turtle Carapace and Plastron) into powder, administer one fangcun bi. Avoid eating Amaranth (Xiancai). (From *Waitai Miyao*, Vol. 4)
For headache, high fever, and restlessness recurring after recovery from Shanghan.
Fuyong Huanglong Tang (Yellow Dragon Decoction), five he, three times daily. (From *Ishinpo*, Vol. 14)
Generally, after recent recovery from febrile diseases or major illnesses, consuming pork, intestines, blood products, fatty fish, or greasy foods will inevitably cause severe diarrhea, which physicians cannot treat, leading to death. Consuming cakes, millet, malt sugar, dried meat, roasted dates, chestnuts, fruits, or hard-to-digest items, when stomach qi is still weak and unable to digest, will inevitably generate internal heat. If purgatives are administered at this time, it will cause cold deficiency in the stomach, making severe diarrhea uncontrollable. Not purging leads to death; purging leads to critical danger. Both are difficult to save. Many die from this after febrile diseases; caution is essential.
When an illness has just healed, only gruel should be eaten. It is better to eat little and feel hungry than to become full. Do not consume other foods; even if desired, do not provide them. After some time, as health gradually returns, mutton gruel or rabbit, pheasant, or venison can be gradually introduced. Pork and dog meat must absolutely be avoided.
After recent recovery, one should lie quietly. Do not allow others to comb hair or wash the face. Not only does this cause physical fatigue, but excessive talking or mental exertion also causes spirit fatigue. All these lead to recurrence due to overexertion (Laofu). For example, Governor Gu Zixian had recovered but was not fully strong. He visited Hua Tuo for pulse diagnosis. Hua Tuo said: "Although the disease has resolved, you are still deficient and un-recovered, with insufficient yang qi. Do not engage in strenuous activity. General fatigue is tolerable, but engaging in sexual intercourse will cause death, and upon death, your tongue will protrude several inches." His wife, hearing of his recovery, traveled over a hundred li to visit him. They stayed overnight and engaged in intercourse. Three days later, he fell ill, his tongue protruded several inches, and he died. Anyone engaging in sexual intercourse within one hundred days of recent recovery, while qi and blood have not yet stabilized, will almost certainly die. Generally, sixty days after the main illness has healed, when one can ride horses and hunt, engaging in sexual intercourse will cause vomiting of saliva and death. Furthermore, engaging in sexual intercourse during a febrile disease is called the "Yinyang Yi" (Yin-Yang Transmission) disease, which is difficult to treat and often fatal. Recently, a scholar suffered from mild Shanghan. After inducing sweating, more than ten days passed, and he could ride a horse, believing himself recovered. Consequently, he engaged in sexual intercourse, and then...
