Dan Du (Erysipelas), also known as Tian Huo (Heavenly Fire). Suddenly, the skin and flesh appear red like applied cinnabar; large lesions are palm-sized, while severe cases involve whole-body itching with slight swelling.
There is a type called Bai Dan (White Erysipelas), where itchy and painful rashes arise in the flesh, with slight puffiness resembling wind hives; it is treated similarly to Chi Dan (Red Erysipelas). There is Ji Guan Dan (Rooster Comb Erysipelas), characterized by raised red lesions, large ones like linked coins, small ones like sesame, wheat, or bean grains, with granular texture on the skin resembling rooster comb tissue; this is also referred to as Zhu Yu Huo Dan (Cornel Fire Erysipelas) and is treated like Tian Huo. There is Shui Dan (Water Erysipelas), caused by internal heat combined with water-dampness binding together; it presents with a晃晃 (shimmering) yellow-red color, appearing as if containing fluid, and tends to occur on the abdomen and genitalia; it is treated like Huo Dan (Fire Erysipelas). If Shui Dan occurs on the dorsum of the foot and between the shins, it appears yellow like Huo Dan, eventually turning purple over time; if untreated, it becomes Gu Chuang (Bone Sore). Although non-toxic and not fatal, once it becomes a bone sore, it is difficult to heal. The classics state: When Wind Evil lodges in the muscles, the muscle surface becomes deficient, causing True Qi to scatter; when combined with Cold Qi beating against the skin, it manifests outwardly through the Cou Li (interstices), opening the Hao Mao (pores), causing erratic Qi flow, which results in itching. Thus, Feng Zhen (Wind Rash) and Feng Sao Ji (Wind Itching Disease) all stem from this.
Chi Zhen (Red Rash) suddenly appears like mosquito or flea bites, causing vexation and itching; severe cases present as continuous, overlapping swellings that rise upon scratching. Bai Zhen (White Rash) presents similarly.
Sheng Ma Gao (Cimicifuga Ointment) is a formula for treating Dan Du (Erysipelas), swelling, heat, and sores.
Ingredients: Sheng Ma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae), Bai Lian (Radix Paeoniae Rubra), Lou Lu (Radix Euphorbiae Humifusae), Mang Xiao (Natrii Sulfas) (each 2 liang); Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Zhi Shi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus), Lian Qiao (Forsythiae Fructum), She Xian (Herba Siegesbeckiae) (each 3 liang); Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus) (20 fruits); Fu Bi (Rhizoma Polygoni Cuspidati - *Note: Text says 'Fu', likely referring to a herb like Fu Pen Zi or similar contextually, but strictly transliterated here based on text fragment*).
The above ten herbs are chopped, pounded fine, placed in a vessel, soaked in three sheng of water for half a day, then decocted with five sheng of pig lard until the water evaporates. Remove the dregs and apply the ointment five times daily. For urgent preparation, decoct with water; this is an extremely effective formula. (From *Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang*, Vol. 5)
Dan is considered evil toxic qi, with colors varying unpredictably. It must be treated immediately; otherwise, pain becomes unbearable, leading to ulceration with discharge of several sheng of pus and blood, or occurring at joints, potentially severing limbs. This belongs to the category of Ju (Carbuncle/Furuncle). Below are treatment formulas.
Boiled millet: If thorny, wash before use. (From *Wai Tai Mi Yao*, Vol. 30)
Formula for Dan Fa (Erysipelas eruption) on ankles.
Pound garlic into a paste, apply thickly, and replace when dry. (From *Wai Tai Mi Yao*, Vol. 31)
For sudden red-black eruption on face, body, and limbs resembling scabies; if untreated, it worsens daily and can be fatal if covering the whole body.
Melt sheep fat and rub it on the affected area; green sheep fat is best. (From *Wai Tai Mi Yao*, Vol. 30)
Another formula:
Apply mud from under the pig trough. (From *Wai Tai Mi Yao*, Vol. 30)
For Dan Ru (Erysipelas spreading) in the skin with wide invasion, named Huo Dan (Fire Erysipelas); if it enters the abdomen, it is fatal. Treatment formula:
Apply powder of Xi Lao (larva of Cetoniinae beetles). (From *Yi Xin Fang*, Vol. 17)
For generalized redness of the body:
Apply thin layers of menstrual cloth worn by women; alternatively, use its juice to bathe children. (From *Yi Xin Fang*, Vol. 17)
Another formula:
Pound Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), mix with water, and apply. (From *Yi Xin Fang*, Vol. 17)
Another formula:
Pound Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructum), mix with water, and apply. (From *Yi Xin Fang*, Vol. 17)
Another formula:
Mix Mang Xiao (Natrii Sulfas) with water and apply. (From *Yi Xin Fang*, Vol. 17)
Single-herb formulas for Dan Du (Erysipelas), pounded and applied thinly:
Fresh She Xian (Herba Siegesbeckiae), Fresh Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Fresh Fu Bi leaves, Fresh Shen Huo Ye (Leaves of *Artemisia* sp.), Fresh Song Cai Ye (Chinese Cabbage Leaves), Fresh Wu Ye Teng (Stem of *Paederia scandens*), Dou Chi (Fermented Soybean), Fu Ping (Lemna minor).
The above eight herbs are pounded separately and applied separately.
Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructum), Mang Xiao (Natrii Sulfas).
The above four herbs are each pounded, mixed with water, and applied separately. (From *Yi Xin Fang*, Vol. 17)
Formula for Bai Dan (White Erysipelas):
Pound white porcelain shards, mix with pig lard, and apply. (From *Wai Tai Mi Yao*, Vol. 30)
Another formula:
Burn pig manure to ash, mix with egg white, and apply. (From *Wai Tai Mi Yao*, Vol. 30)
For Chi Zhen (Red Rash), which flares up in heat and subsides in cold; and Bai Zhen (White Rash), which flares up on cloudy/cold days:
For Bai Zhen: Wipe with water-decocted Bai Fan (Alumen); or boil Fu Bi with a little wine for bathing; or wipe with wine-decocted Shi Nan Ye (Leaves of *Pyrola calliantha*); or wipe with water-decocted chicken droppings juice.
Chi Zhen arises from dampness obstructing the muscles, transforming into heat, which forms the red rash. It worsens in hot weather and improves with cooling. Treatment:
Pound fresh She Xian (Herba Siegesbeckiae) thoroughly and apply; this is most effective. (From *Wai Tai Mi Yao*, Vol. 30)
Bai Zhen arises from wind obstructing heat in the muscles; heat and wind bind to form the white rash. It worsens on rainy/cold days and in wind, but improves in warm/sunny weather or when the body is kept warm. Treatment:
Wipe with water-decocted Zhi Shi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus); or pound into powder, stir-fry, wrap in blue cloth, and apply heat (moxibustion-like warming). (From *Wai Tai Mi Yao*, Vol. 30)
Formula for all types of Zhen (Rash):
Apply decoction of Fu Bi with a little wine; no case fails to heal. (From *Zheng Lei Ben Cao*, Vol. 11)
