Persimmon: Sweet and astringent in taste, cold in nature, non-toxic. Enters the Heart, Lung, and Large Intestine meridians. Its main functions are to moisten the Heart and Lungs, unblock the nose and ears, resolve phlegm and cough, clear heat and fire, relieve thirst and alcohol intoxication, expel old blood stasis in the intestines, and stop hematemesis (vomiting blood). Contraindicated to be eaten with crab. Dried persimmon moistens the throat, reduces fire, tonifies deficiency, kills parasites, thickens the intestines, and stops dysentery. Persimmon calyx treats hiccups (involuntary spasm of the diaphragm).
Commentary: The red color of the persimmon suggests it enters the Heart; its moistening nature suggests it enters the Lung. Since the Large Intestine is paired with the Lung and jointly responsible for transportation and excretion, it also enters this meridian. Its cold nature can injure Spleen Yang, so it should not be used excessively. Eating it with crab causes abdominal pain and severe diarrhea. Both dried persimmon and the calyx are generally cold and cooling, capable of clearing heat and fire.
Euryale Seed (Qian Shi): Sweet in taste, neutral in nature, non-toxic. Enters the Heart, Kidney, Spleen, and Stomach meridians. Its main functions are to calm the five Zang organs, tonify the Spleen and Stomach, benefit essence and Qi, stop seminal emission and leakage, warm the waist and knees, remove damp-bi obstruction, clarify the eyes and ears, and treat forgetfulness.
Commentary: The sweetness of Euryale Seed suits the Spleen and Stomach. When Earth (Spleen/Stomach) is properly regulated, Water (Kidney) is not over-controlled, and Fire (Heart) has no fear of stealing Yin essence, thus it also enters the Heart and Kidney meridians. Excess... [Text cuts off here]
Walnut Kernel (Hu Tao Ren): Sweet in taste, neutral in nature, non-toxic. Enters the Lung, Liver, and Kidney meridians. Its main functions are to promote blood circulation, moisten the skin and muscles, and tonify the lower Yuan (Kidney essence). Applied externally with Pine Resin (Song Zhi), it treats scrofula (tuberculous lymphadenitis); taken with hot wine, it manages traumatic injuries. Use the kernel after removing the shell. Overconsumption may stir wind and generate phlegm.
Commentary: Walnut enters the Lung meridian, hence it treats skin issues; it enters the Liver meridian, hence it treats blood vessel issues. Its nature belongs to Fire, capable of tonifying Ministerial Fire (Xiang Huo), thus it also enters the Kidney meridian. Fire controls Metal (Lung); excessive consumption injures the Lung, thereby stirring wind and generating phlegm. Contraindicated in cases of diarrhea, dysentery, and common cold due to wind-cold.
Longan Aril (Long Yan Rou): Sweet in taste, warm in nature, non-toxic. Enters the Heart and Spleen meridians. Its main functions are to nourish Blood and Qi, nourish muscles, benefit deficient Qi, beautify complexion, eliminate forgetfulness, treat palpitations (Zhen Chong), enhance wisdom, clarify the eyes and ears, and prolong life with long-term use.
Commentary: Longan is a sweet and warm substance, pleasing to the Spleen. The Heart is the Mother of the Spleen; when the Mother cares for the Son without worry, Heart Blood is preserved, hence it enters these two meridians. However, sweetness can cause distension. For conditions involving middle-jiao fullness or Qi stagnation/blockage, such substances should be avoided.
Olive: Sweet and astringent in taste, warm in nature, non-toxic. Enters the Spleen and Stomach meridians. Its main functions are to open the appetite, direct Qi downward, digest food and alcohol, treat thirst, stop diarrhea, and resolve various fish poisons. The kernel inside the pit can be applied topically to treat dry and cracked lips.
Commentary: The sweet and warm nature of Olive suits the Spleen and Stomach. However, its heat property can cause upper jiao congestion, so it should not be consumed in excess.
