Lei Gong said: When using *Hai Ge* (Clam Shell, *Meretrix meretrix*), one must select fresh and clean specimens, place them in a silk bag; then take four taels each of *Diyu* (Sanguisorbae Radix, 地榆), *Wuhua Pi* (Bark of Five-Flower Tree, 五花皮), and *Wufang Cao* (Herb of Five Directions, 五方草), cut them finely. Next, place approximately four to five jin of *Muli* (Oyster Shell, 牡蛎) in a flat-bottomed pan, secure it firmly with objects on all sides, then place the pearls (*Zhenzhu*, 真珠) on top. After placing the pearls, add the three chopped herbs, cover the vessel, and decoct with fermented rice water (*Jiangshui*, 浆水) for three days and nights without letting the fire go out. Upon completion, remove the specimen, wash it thoroughly with licorice root decoction (*Gancao Tang*, 甘草汤), pound it into fine powder in a mortar, sieve it repeatedly through a silk cloth, and grind it further twenty thousand times before use.
When using *Hai Ge*, ensure that the shells are not broken or perforated; only such intact specimens are suitable for medicinal use.
Lei Gong said: Do not use snails growing on miscellaneous trees for medicinal purposes. When harvesting, select those found on the eastern branches of mulberry trees. After harvesting, remove the inner core, soak and rinse seven times with boiling fermented rice water until the water remains boiling, then dry them in a porcelain pot before use. Do not arbitrarily alter the processing method, as this will render the medicine ineffective.
Lei Gong said: This refers to *Zhenzhumu* (Mother-of-Pearl, 真珠母). First, remove the rough outer skin. Boil it in a large porcelain vessel with salt and flowing water from east to west for one *shi* (two hours). Remove, wipe dry, pound into powder, and grind until fine. Then, return it to the pot, add *Wuhua Pi*, *Diyu*, and *Ejiao* (Donkey-hide Gelatin, 阿胶), and rinse three times with flowing water from east to west in a porcelain vessel. Once dry, grind it ten thousand times more before incorporating it into prescriptions. For every five taels processed, use half a tael of salt as a standard for the second boiling; for this step, use ten taels each of *Diyu*, *Wuhua Pi*, and *Ejiao*. While taking ten taels of *Zhenzhumu*, one must never consume wild peaches (*Shantao*, 山桃), as this may cause blindness.
Lei Gong said: Do not use *Youbo Xun Gu* (Bone of the Swimming Mushroom Fungus, 游波蕈骨). This insect bone resembles *Hai Ge* closely but lacks surface luster. If mistakenly ingested, it causes madness characterized by running wildly and attempting to jump into water; people at the time called this "ghost-induced mania," but it is actually due to the toxicity of this insect bone. If ingested, antidote with vinegar for immediate recovery. Wash *Hai Ge* three times in water, wipe dry, crush finely, and grind into powder before use. For every one tael of *Hai Ge*, use two taels each of *Digupi* (Cortex Lycii, 地骨皮) and *Boye* (Cupressi Cacumen, 柏叶), cut finely, and rinse with flowing water from east to west before use.
