Lei Gong said: When using Ziwan (Asteris Radix et Rhizoma), one must first remove the rootlets. There is a variety with white color like silk, called Yangxucao (Sheep Beard Grass), which naturally differs in properties. After harvesting, remove the head and soil, wash thoroughly with flowing water from the east, soak in honey overnight, and the next morning, dry on fire for use.
For every liang of preparation, use two fen of honey.

Lei Gong said: When using Qianhu (Peucedani Radix), do not use the roots of Ye Hao (wild mugwort), because it resembles Qianhu but has a coarse, sour taste. If mistakenly used, it causes gastric reflux and inability to eat. True Qianhu tastes sweet and slightly bitter.
When preparing Qianhu, first scrape off the dark green-black skin, rootlets, and soil with a knife, finely chop, soak in sweet bamboo sap until moist, and dry in the sun for use.

Lei Gong said: When using Zelan (Lycopus lucidus), one must distinguish between male and female, as their forms differ. Da Zelan (Large Lycopus) has round leaves and stems, yellowish-green roots; it can generate blood, regulate qi, and nourish ying. Xiao Zelan (Small Lycopus) is quite different; upon collection, observe spots on leaves and sharp rootlets; this herb can break blood stasis and resolve long-standing accumulations.
When preparing Xiao Zelan, it must be finely chopped, placed in a silk bag, hung in the corner of the south side of the house, and dried for use.
