The origin of the Feng surname lies in the descendants of Huangxiong Shi. He was born with sage virtue, succeeded Heaven to rule as king, and became the ancestor of emperors for all generations. His position was in the East, ruling with Wood Virtue (Wood De), serving as the Lord of Cangjing. When he established his capital at Chen, a divine dragon emerged from the Rong River; he modeled after it and drew the Eight Trigrams (Bagua). He created written characters to replace the administration of knotted cords, established the Five Constants (Ren, Yi, Li, Zhi, Xin), fixed the Five Elements (Wu Xing), rectified the relationship between ruler and minister, clarified the bond between father and son, distinguished the righteousness between husband and wife, and formulated the principles of marriage. He constructed houses, wove nets for hunting and fishing, domesticated oxen and horses to pull heavy loads and travel long distances. He selected sacrificial animals for offerings, thus he is called Fuxi Shi. He governed the world for one hundred and ten years.
The origin of the Jiang surname lies in the descendants of Lieshan Shi. He was born with sage virtue, inherited Wood with Fire Virtue, positioned in the South, ruling with Fire Virtue, serving as the Lord of Chijing. At that time, the people ate grass and drank water, gathered fruits from trees, and consumed the meat of snails and clams, resulting in frequent illnesses. Therefore, he sought edible items, tasted hundreds of herbs, planted the five grains, and nourished the people. He instituted markets at noon. He made pottery and smelted metals, crafted axes and adzes, invented plows and spades, taught the people farming and sowing, thus he is called Shennong. He established his capital at Qufu. He governed the world for one hundred and twenty years.
The origin of the Ji surname lies in the son of Shaodian, the ruler of Youxiong State. He was born spiritual and miraculous, grew up wise and intelligent, and ascended to heaven upon maturity. He ruled with Earth Virtue, serving as the Lord of Huangjing, thus he is called Huangdi (Yellow Emperor). He established his capital at Zhuolu. He received the Hetu (River Map), observed the phenomena of the sun, moon, and stars, and began the records of star officials. He ordered Da Nao to explore the nature of the Five Elements, divined the direction built by the Dipper stars, and initiated the Jiazi sexagenary cycle; he ordered Rongcheng to create calendars; he ordered Lishou to develop arithmetic; he ordered Linglun to create musical pitches; he ordered Qibo to determine medical prescriptions. He made clothing and caps to distinguish nobility and baseness, managed weapons and warfare, manufactured boats and carts, divided provinces and wilds, and governed the world for one hundred years.
In ancient times, those who understood the Dao followed Yin and Yang, harmonized with techniques and numbers, had regulated diet and sleep, did not labor wantonly or excessively, and thus could live long and healthy lives. People today are different; their daily routines are irregular, they do not know dietary taboos or avoidances, nor do they practice moderation. They have many desires, prefer rich flavors, cannot maintain the center, and do not know how to preserve fullness; therefore, many decline before fifty. The path to peace and joy lies in nurturing the body. The method of nurturing is best achieved by maintaining the center; maintaining the center prevents diseases of excess and deficiency. In spring, summer, autumn, and winter, the Yin and Yang of the four seasons change. Illness arises from excess, generally due to forcing oneself against one's nature. Thus, those who practice health preservation avoid excessive consumption and conserve true Yuan Qi (Original Qi); why would they worry about invasion by external pathogens? Therefore, one who is good at taking medicine is inferior to one who is good at nurturing; if one is bad at nurturing, one is better off taking medicine. There are people in the world who are neither good at nurturing nor good at taking medicine; when illness strikes suddenly, do they blame the gods and heaven? One skilled in self-care eats bland food, reduces thinking, moderates desires, guards against anger and joy, cherishes Yuan Qi, simplifies speech, disregards gains and losses, breaks through sorrow and obstruction, eliminates delusions, stays away from likes and dislikes, restrains vision and hearing, diligently consolidates internally, does not exhaust the spirit, and does not exhaust the form. Since both spirit and form are peaceful, how can illness arise? Therefore, those skilled in nurturing character eat when slightly hungry but do not eat until full, drink when slightly thirsty but do not drink to excess. Food should be taken in small amounts frequently, not in large meals infrequently. Being full while hungry, or eating when full, harms the lungs and Qi respectively. If one has just eaten, one must not lie down immediately, or various diseases will arise.
Whenever hot food causes sweating, do not face the wind, or spasmodic disease, headache, dry eyes, and excessive sleepiness may occur. Do not eat too much at night, and do not let evil wind enter while sleeping.
After finishing a meal, rinse the mouth with warm water to prevent dental diseases and bad breath. When sweating, do not fan yourself, or hemiplegia may develop. Do not urinate or defecate facing northwest. Do not hold back urine or stool, as this leads to knee strain and cold bi pain. Do not urinate or defecate under stars, the sun, moon, shrines, or temples. Do not sing or shout loudly while walking at night. The taboo for a day is not to eat too much in the evening; for a month, not to get drunk on the last day; for a year, not to travel far at year-end; for a lifetime, not to engage in sexual intercourse while lamps are lit. Taking medicine for a thousand days is not as good as sleeping alone for one night. On one's Benming (Zodiac) day, and on parents' Benming days, do not eat meat corresponding to the zodiac sign.
When sitting, one must sit upright to rectify the mind; when standing, one must stand straight to align the body. Standing for too long injures the bones; sitting for too long injures the blood. Walking for too long injures the sinews; lying down for too long injures the Qi. Looking for too long injures the spirit. Do not wash hair immediately after eating until full, or wind diseases may arise. If suffering from red eyes, strictly avoid sexual intercourse, otherwise internal cataracts may develop. Do not bathe facing the wind; since pores open, evil wind easily enters. Do not climb heights or tread on dangers, run, or chase carriages and horses, as this causes chaotic Qi, startled spirit, and scattered soul.
During strong winds, heavy rain, extreme cold, or extreme heat, do not go out or act rashly. Do not blow on lamps with your mouth, as this damages Qi.
Do not stare directly at sunlight, as it damages the eyes. Do not gaze into the distance with great effort, as this strains eye power. Do not sit or lie facing wind or damp ground. Do not sleep with lights on at night, or the soul may not remain. Do not sleep during the day, as this damages Yuan Qi. Do not speak while eating, and do not talk while sleeping, lest Qi be damaged.
Do not arbitrarily enter shrines or temples.
When encountering wind, rain, thunder, or lightning, close doors and windows, sit upright, burn incense, fearing the passage of deities. Do not rage violently, as anger generates qi disorders and malignant sores. Spitting far is worse than spitting near; spitting near is worse than not spitting at all. Do not keep tiger or leopard skins near meat shops, as this damages the eyes.
Avoid lust like avoiding arrows, avoid wind like avoiding enemies. Do not drink empty-stomach tea, and eat less millet porridge after the Shen hour (3-5 PM).
Ancients said: Those entering Guangzhou should not fast in the morning nor overeat in the evening. This applies not only to Guangzhou; fasting in the morning is taboo generally. Ancients said: Boil noodles thoroughly, cook meat soft, drink alcohol sparingly, sleep alone. Ancients practiced health preservation in daily life; modern people wait until old age to preserve life, which is of little benefit.
Before sleeping at night, rub hands until hot and massage eyes to prevent eye diseases forever. Rub hands until hot and massage the face to prevent sores. One exhale, ten rubs; one rub, ten massages; practicing this long reduces wrinkles and enhances complexion. In the clear morning, wash eyes with hot water to prevent eye diseases. Brushing teeth at night is better than in the morning to prevent dental diseases. Brushing teeth with salt in the morning prevents dental diseases. Before sleeping at night, comb hair one hundred times to reduce head wind diseases. Wash feet before sleeping to prevent cold limbs. During intense heat, do not wash face with cold water, or eye diseases may arise.
Do not sit for long periods under dead trees or in damp, shady places, lest Yin Qi affect the person. On the day of Start of Autumn, do not bathe, or skin becomes rough and scaly. Silence preserves Yuan Qi; reduced thinking illuminates inner wisdom; absence of anger keeps spirits calm; absence of annoyance cools the heart. Joy should not reach extremes, and desires should not be indulged.
