Zhongshu (Heatstroke) refers to contracting summerheat while in a state of rest. For instance, seeking coolness in deep halls or large buildings, one is constrained by Yin-cold, preventing the summerheat from dispersing. External symptoms include fever, headache, restlessness and irritability, or cough with fever and incessant sweating. However, it must be characterized by fluctuating fever and sweating under the hypochondrium to be diagnosed as Shangshu (Summerheat Injury). If fever persists for a long time without sweating under the hypochondrium, it is Winter-heat Cold Damage (Shanghan in summer), which, although rare, must be carefully differentiated before administering decoctions indiscriminately. Furthermore, abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea constitute Maoshu (Exposure to Summerheat), which should be treated with cooling and draining methods. Limb fatigue and loss of appetite indicate that heat has damaged Yuanqi (Original Qi), requiring tonification. Sudden collapse and unconsciousness constitute Shufeng (Summerwind), which requires cooling methods combined with herbs entering the Wind meridians; it should not be treated generally as Zhongshu.
Two cloves of garlic, pounded into a paste, mixed with clean soil from a sun-dried path (muddy soil is unusable) and fresh well water, taken orally in a qian dose, is very effective.
Another prescription: Black sesame seeds, stir-fried, ground with well water into juice and forced down, leads to immediate recovery.
Another prescription: Leaves of Lablab bean, crushed for juice and drunk, is also effective.
Another formula: Liuyi San (Six-One Powder) and Gaiyuan San are both effective.
Also known as Zhongre (Middle Heat) or Zhongmo (Middle Miasma). One must absolutely avoid using cold water to spray or pour over the patient; once exposed to cold, the condition becomes incurable. Immediately tie straw into a long strip, coil it around the umbilicus, and surround it externally with crushed hot soil. Have someone urinate into the center so that warm qi enters the abdomen; after a long time, self-healing occurs.
Another prescription: Roll toilet paper into a tube, ignite it, and smoke it towards the mouth and nose to revive the patient. The effect is miraculous.
Another prescription: Dip cloth in boiling water and apply compresses, changing them frequently. Focus on applying heat to the umbilicus and three cun below it. After regaining consciousness, strictly avoid drinking cold water; doing so will cause death again.
Another prescription: Burn Zaojiao (Gleditsia Sinensis Fruit) until carbonized but retaining its nature, along with raw Gancao (Licorice Root), each 1 qian, grind together into powder, mix with warm water, and force-feed.
Another prescription: Baijian (Alum) powder, mixed with Yinyang Shui (Yin-Yang Water) and taken orally in a qian dose, causes immediate awakening; it is highly effective.
In summer months, if there is body heat and lethargy, and the syndrome is not yet clear, it may be Chudan (Eruptive Heat Toxin). Eat several raw Baibian Dou (Lablab Bean). If the fishy smell is unpalatable, soak raw Baibian Dou in water, grind it into juice (one small cup), mix with one zhan of water, and drink. Recovery follows immediately.
