One jin of Perilla Leaf (Zi Su Ye) is decocted into a basin of concentrated soup. The infant is held facing the basin for fumigation. When cool, replace with hot soup. Externally, apply hot compresses to the umbilicus and swollen areas of the body until recovery.
Another prescription: One jin of scallion white with roots, mashed and stir-fried until hot, divided into two bags for alternating hot compresses below the umbilicus.
Another prescription: Powdered Gleditsia Sinensis Fruit (Zao Jiao), blow a small amount into the nose to induce sneezing. This method works when other medicines fail.
For newborns with inability to pass urine or stool and severe abdominal distension, urgently have someone rinse their mouth with warm water, then perform cupping-like suction on seven points: anterior chest, posterior back, below the umbilicus, and both palms and soles. Suck each point five to seven times until red qi penetrates; once the qi penetrates, bowel movement will naturally resume.
Another prescription: Seven scallion heads with roots, one large piece of fresh ginger, three qian of fermented soybean (Dou Chi), and three qian of salt, all mashed together into a cake. Bake until hot and apply to the umbilicus, binding it tightly for a long time until passage resumes.
This condition is caused by excessive heat in the fetal qi. If the mother consumes alcohol, wheat products, fried, or roasted foods generating toxic heat, this heat flows into the Heart and Lung meridians. The fetus absorbs this heat, which also transmits to the Heart and Lungs. In females, heat entering the Heart causes hematuria; in males, heat entering the Lungs causes hematochezia. Use natural juice extracted from Rehmannia Glutinosa Root (Sheng Di Huang), mixed with a little honey... [See Volume 6, Urinary Section].
Puncture a hole with a silver hairpin, not too deep, and cover it with an oil-paper wick to prevent re-closure.
If a newborn's toes are curved backward, it is because the mother sat cross-legged daily during pregnancy. The fetus shares qi with the mother, and its form transforms according to this qi. To treat, roll soft cotton into a stick and place it behind the infant's knees. Wash and compress frequently with a decoction of Chaenomelis Fructus (Mu Gua). Over time, the tendons will stretch and extend naturally. This illustrates why prenatal care must be cautious, explaining the ancients' emphasis on prenatal education (Tai Jiao).
When infants have insufficient milk, irregular diet, excessive thirst, overeating, pica (eating dirt/objects), lethargy, blue-tinted eyes, unclear vision, drooping head, sallow emaciation, visible subcutaneous veins, abdominal distension, or persistent diarrhea, these symptoms constitute "Gan Ji" (Infantile Malnutrition/Worm Accumulation) due to food stagnation and intestinal parasites. Medicines that kill worms are required for efficacy. However, such drugs are often harsh and damage the Spleen and Stomach, leading to poor outcomes. A secret external treatment can cure the root cause without damaging the body. It also treats adult abdominal pain due to worm accumulation. Preserve this valuable remedy. Dry inflated sheep bladder (Yang Niu Pao) in the shade. Place one or two liang of high-quality Fenjiu (Fen Wine) or strong liquor inside, tie tightly with thread. Replace the wine several times as it decreases until no more liquid is absorbed; the illness will then resolve. Sheep bladders are rare in remote areas; purchase them in advance during spring and autumn sacrifices (3-8 pieces). Pig bladders may be used if sheep bladders are unavailable, though their efficacy is untested and likely inferior.
Another prescription: Scallion whites (approx. 1 cun each), Bitter Apricot Kernel (Ku Xing Ren), Raw Gardenia Fruit (Sheng Huang Zhi Zi), Red Dates (Da Zao) - 7 each, Mirabilite (Pi Xiao) 3 qian, and first-run authentic liquor... [Text incomplete].
Xiao Gan Wu Jia San (Priceless Powder for Eliminating Gan): Concha Heterodonis (Shi Jue Ming) 1.5 liang, Calamina (Lu Gan Shi) 5 qian (soaked in child's urine for one day and night, calcined until floating on water is ideal), Talcum (Hua Shi) 5 qian, Realgar (Xiong Huang) 2 qian, Cinnabar (Zhu Sha) 1 qian, Borax (Bing Pian) 0.5 fen, Cuttlefish Bone (Hai Piao Xiao) 5 qian (shells removed). Grind into fine powder... [Dosage incomplete].
Xiao Gan Wan (Gan-Eliminating Pill): Atractylodes Rhizome (Cang Zhu) (soaked in rice wash water, peeled, stir-fried), White Atractylodes Rhizome (Bai Zhu) (earth-stir-fried), Angelica Sinensis Radix (Dang Gui) (wine-washed), White Peony Root (Bai Shao) (wine-stir-fried), Ophiopogon Tuber (Mai Dong)... [Text incomplete]. Mentions Radish (Luo Bo), Amomum Fruit (Sha Ren) 5 qian each, subcutaneous veins, muscle regeneration, and Gan conditions.
