As well as cases of sudden death due to blockage by phlegm (Phlegm Obstruction), fire (Fire Obstruction), or qi (Qi Obstruction).
If no medicine is available at the moment, immediately pinch the Renzhong acupoint (GV26) with the thumb; for mild conditions, crying and waking will occur upon a single pinch. If there is no response, pinch the Hegu acupoint (LI4) (located in the web between the thumb and index finger); if still no response, pinch the Zhongchong acupoint (PC9) (located at the tip of the middle finger, outside the nail); if there is still no response, the condition is extremely severe. In this case, place an moxa cone the size of a radish seed on the Zhongchong acupoint (PC9) and apply moxibustion. The patient will revive once the heat reaches the area.
This condition is named fetal malaria (Tai Nue). Take five qian of rock sugar daily, decoct in water, and drink. Even if the malaria attacks once every two days, it will definitely be cured within ten days. Alternatively, wrap two liang of cicada slough (Chantui) to make a pillow for the child to sleep on; the malaria will also cease, which is extremely effective.
When earth-moving activities at home offend the Earth God, causing infantile asthma and discord among family members, one should invite someone to determine the Nine Palaces positions, identify where the Taiyang Palace is located, take soil from that location, decoct it in water, and administer it. One must also perform rituals to appease the Earth God, after which the patient will recover. If there is no effect, it is not due to offending the Earth God, and a renowned physician must be consulted for treatment.
Please refer to the sections on Spleen and Stomach and Diarrhea. Infantile vomiting and diarrhea present various symptoms and require careful examination. There are cases caused by food injury (Shang Shi), those caused by cold invasion leading to food stagnation, and in summer, those caused by latent summerheat (Fu Shu). For vomiting and diarrhea due to food injury, the vomit has a sour odor, and the stool resembles dregs, sometimes with a sour and foul smell; these should be treated with methods to promote digestion and guide out stagnation. For vomiting and diarrhea due to cold invasion and food stagnation, whether caused by catching wind-cold after eating, having the spleen and stomach first affected by wind-cold before eating, or consuming cold foods after meals, the result is food stagnation. Although the causes differ, they all fall under cold invasion and food stagnation. These should be treated with dispersing methods combined with promoting digestion. However, such vomiting and diarrhea often involve stabbing pain in the chest and abdomen, known as Huoluan vomiting and diarrhea. The treatment method is the same. For vomiting and diarrhea due to latent summerheat, urination is necessarily difficult, accompanied by irritability and thirst; these should be treated according to summerheat patterns. For severe vomiting, decoct Xiangru San (Elsholtzia Powder) mixed with Yi Yuan San (Benefit Origin Powder); for severe diarrhea, decoct Si Ling San (Four Porias Decoction) mixed with Yi Yuan San (Benefit Origin Powder); use these with discretion. However, alternating vomiting and diarrhea is the most critical condition in infants. If it occurs frequently and does not stop, regardless of the cause, Shen Qi (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) and Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) etc. should be used to urgently rescue the Stomach Qi. This applies not only to food injury/stagnation but also to latent summerheat cases. Initially, although summerheat pathogen exists, after frequent vomiting and diarrhea, the heat dissipates, and Stomach Qi becomes suddenly deficient. If warm tonification is not used to urgently rescue, the Middle Qi may suddenly collapse, leading to floating deficiency-phlegm rising upward, and the condition may change drastically within moments. Furthermore, after frequent vomiting, Stomach Qi is greatly deficient, Qi fails to return to its root, and Yang floats externally, manifesting as red face, hot head, body heat, and thirst, resembling heat syndromes. Unskilled physicians, unaware of this principle, mistakenly diagnose it as heat and administer cooling medicines, killing patients as easily as turning a hand, which is truly terrifying. Therefore, when treating vomiting and diarrhea with ineffective medication, it is better to err on the side of warm tonification than on the side of cooling; errors of cooling lead to rapid disaster, often too late to save.
