Tai Wuyao (Aucklandiae Radix) 1 qian, decocted in water and taken orally; it is highly effective.
Infantile nocturnal crying is often caused by overdressing or overcovering, compounded by the heat generated when parents sleep in the same bed as the child. As the proverb says: "If you want the child to be safe and sound, keep them slightly hungry and cold." Applying chicken manure to the infant's umbilicus is extremely effective; use rooster manure for boys and hen manure for girls.
Another prescription: Grind Zhusha (Cinnabar) into freshly drawn cold water, and apply this mixture to five locations: the epigastrium (heart pit), and both palms and soles. This is most reliable.
Another prescription: Take seven Chantui (Periostracum Cicadae), remove the feet and head, stir-fry the lower half, and grind into powder. Mix with 2-3 fen of Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), decoct in water, and take orally. It stops crying immediately with miraculous effect.
Another prescription: Place straw from a chicken coop under the mattress without the mother knowing. Dried cow dung may also be used. If these methods fail and nocturnal crying persists, observe the complexion: if the face is cyanotic or pale with cold hands and feet, use Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Fuling (Poria), Fushen (Poria with Hostwood), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Gouteng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis), with Hongzao (Jujubae Fructus) as a guide, decocted and taken orally. If the face is red, lips are crimson, and the body is hot, use Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Sheng Gancao (Raw Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), with Dengxincao (Junci Medullae) and Zhuye (Bambusae Folium) as guides, decocted and taken orally. Alternatively, apply the previously mentioned method of applying Wu Zhu Yu (Evodiae Fructus) to the soles, which is excellent, but only applicable when the face is red and lips are crimson.
Another prescription: For those with a red face and heart heat, use Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis) 2 fen and Dengxincao (Junci Medullae) 10 stems, decocted and taken orally.
Another prescription: Take 5 Denghua (Flower of Lampwick), grind into powder, and apply to the mother's nipple, allowing the infant to suckle.
Another prescription: Grind Wubeizi (Galla Chinensis) into powder, mix with saliva to form a cake, insert into the umbilicus, and secure with a bandage. Effective.
Another prescription: Zaoxintu (Furni Paries) 3 qian, Zhusha (Cinnabar) 1 fen, Shexiang (Moschus), 1 li. Mix with honey water, take 5 fen per dose.
Another prescription: Write the characters "Zi" and "Wu" with Zhusha (Cinnabar) on paper and paste onto the umbilicus; crying stops immediately.
Another prescription: Draw a picture of a donkey, paste it upside down on the wall at the head of the infant's bed; it heals spontaneously.
Another prescription: Collect the juice from the infant's first worn clothes, place it in a bottle; the infant will cease crying.
Another prescription: Burn 2 li of fingernails from the parents to ash, combine with 1 qian of Congtou (Allii Cepae Bulbus), decoct in water, and drink. Effective.
Another prescription: Use a fire-poking stick from one's own home, or a burnt-out piece of firewood. Smooth the charred end. If unavailable, use a wooden stick to poke the fire for several days before using it. With Zhusha (Cinnabar), write upwards: "Fire-poking stick, fire-poking stick, Five Thunder Gods of Heaven send you as divine generals to capture the nocturnal crying ghost, beat it to death and do not let it go, swiftly according to the law. Decree." After writing, keep it secret, and place it at the foot of the bed, on the left for boys and right for girls. This was transmitted by Huang Danweng.
Another prescription: Wu Yao (Aucklandiae Radix) 5 fen, decocted and taken orally; also effective.
Another prescription: Hang a bright mirror at the foot of the bed; crying stops spontaneously.
