Olive pit (raw, ground into extremely fine powder) 1 liang, Ren Tui (human fingernail, sand-fried) 3 qian, Bi Qian (spider nest on the wall) 1 qian.
Preparation of raw olive: In the twelfth lunar month, collect rotten olives, regardless of weight, place them in a double-layered cattail bag, tie securely with coarse rice straw rope, and immerse in a cesspit during winter. Retrieve after Lixia (Start of Summer) of the following year, remove the flesh without allowing contact with water, bury in the soil of a rain-free corridor for seven or ten days, retrieve, spread on reed mats to dry until cracked, avoiding exposure to rain and dew, crush in a stone mortar, then grind into an extremely fine powder for use.
Preparation of Bi Qian: Collect spider nests from walls in advance. Lay raw alum (Bai Fan) on Yin-Yang tiles, place the spider nests on the alum, and cover again with alum to prevent burning into ash; only retain their original properties through calcination. Spider nests found on bamboo or wood are not suitable for use.
Preparation of Feng Hua Xiao (Weathered Niter): In winter, hollow out a large white radish, fill it completely with crude saltpeter (Pi Xiao), and air-dry. Use in the following year. In summer, cucumbers or watermelons can be used similarly. If unavailable, refined Yuan Ming Fen (refined mirabilite) can be used directly.
Another prescription: Air-dry Xiang Gua Di (seed of melon). In cases of sudden throat swelling and obstruction where immediate action is required, hastily take three or four pieces, either soak in water or chew to extract juice, swallow to open the passage, then immediately apply Yuan Zhu Dan via insufflation.
This powder is effective for insufflation treatment of all conditions such as Hou Feng (throat wind), Hou Bi (throat closure), and other throat sores and toxins, having been repeatedly verified as effective. Qing Yu Dan (green carp gallbladder) 1 qian, Huang Gua Shuang (cucumber frost) 1 qian, Mei Hua Bing Pian (plum blossom borneol) 1 fen, ground together into an extremely fine powder, stored in a porcelain bottle to prevent leakage of volatile components. Treatment is considered successful when phlegm and saliva flow from the throat after insufflation.
Preparation of Qing Yu Dan: In winter, obtain the gallbladder of a large green carp, insert several grains of glutinous rice into each gallbladder without draining the bitter fluid, hang in a shaded place to air-dry for use.
Preparation of Huang Gua Shuang: Select old cucumbers, cut off the stem with a bamboo knife, remove seeds and pulp, fill the cavity completely with Pi Xiao (crude saltpeter), replace the stem, tie securely, and hang in a windy but sunless place. Once frost forms on the exterior, sweep it down for use. If the cucumber rots before frost forms, pour out the saltpeter and repeat with a new cucumber. Prepare multiple batches each time to guard against rotting.
Another prescription: Use high-quality Dan Fan (chalcanthite). In winter, mix with green carp bile to form blocks, dry in the shade in a porcelain bottle, scrape off, add a small amount of Bing Pian (borneol), grind extremely finely, store in a porcelain bottle. Insufflation into the throat is highly effective. For trismus (lockjaw) where the mouth cannot open, dip duck wing feathers in the medicine and sweep along the gum line and between teeth to allow penetration into the throat, inducing discharge of phlegm and saliva; the mouth will open shortly thereafter. The powdered medicine remains usable even after being aged for one or two years.
