This condition is named Tianhuo (Heavenly Fire), also known as Liuhuo (Flowing Fire), and commonly referred to as Fengnie (Wind Malaria) or Fenggeda (Wind Hives). In this syndrome, redness and swelling suddenly appear on the body, varying in size, accompanied by pain or itching, and may even cover the entire body, migrating without a fixed location. Some cases begin with white spots that gradually turn yellow, shining under the skin, resembling a sensation of water distension and heaviness. Upon rupture, yellow fluid flows out, causing wet erosion and significant pain; this is called Shuidan (Water Dan) or Fengdan (Wind Dan), often occurring on the legs and knees, attributed to heat in the Spleen and Lung complicated by dampness. Other cases present with red, dry lesions, fever, and itching, shaped like cloud patches; this is called Chiyou dan (Red Migratory Dan), attributed to fire in the Blood level combined with Wind pathogen invasion. Yet other cases feature widespread small white blisters without fever or pain, migrating不定ly; this is called Lengmo (Cold Mo), i.e., Lengdan (Cold Dan), caused by unexpressed fire-toxin and external cold constraint on the skin and muscles. There is also a band of redness and swelling around the waist, named Chanyao dan (Waist-Encircling Dan) or Chanshe chuang (Snake-Encircling Sore) (formula see section on Carbuncles and Sores), along with Jiguan dan (Rooster Comb Dan) and Zhuyu dan (Cornel Fruit Dan). Although there are many names for Dan, they all generally result from Heart Fire and Wind pathogen in the Sanjiao (Triple Burner). The onset is rapid.
Fangfeng Shengma Tang (Saposhnikovia and Cimicifuga Decoction): Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae), Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae), Zhiren (Fructus Gardeniae processed), Maidong (Radix Ophiopogonis), Jingjie (Herba Schizonepetae), Mutong (Caulis Akebiae), Gange (Radix Puerariae), Bohe (Herba Menthae), Xuanshen (Radix Scrophulariae), Niubangzi (Fructus Arctii), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) each 1 qian, Dengxin (Medulla Junci) 10 stems. Decoct in water and take orally. For constipation, add Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) and Zhike (Fructus Aurantii) each 1 qian, decoct in water and take orally. Avoid consuming fish, seafood, chicken, goose, and other foods that stir wind and warm the blood; violating this makes treatment difficult. Severe Dan toxin invading the Heart and Stomach is hard to save. First take this medicine to resolve internal toxin, then use porcelain needles to puncture and remove bad blood, so the toxin disperses with the blood. This method is extremely miraculous and swift, with 100% efficacy. Porcelain needle method: Gently break a piece of porcelain, take a sharp fragment, split the end of a bamboo chopstick horizontally to clamp the porcelain shard exposing the sharp edge outside, tie tightly with thread. Position the porcelain sharp edge against the Dan lesion, and gently tap the chopstick holding the porcelain shard with another chopstick; blood will flow out naturally. Do not prick too deep to injure flesh. If not healed, one may prick again until redness subsides and swelling dissipates. For mild toxin, pricking is unnecessary.
Another prescription: If Fangfeng Shengma Tang above is ineffective, immediately use Siwu Xiaofeng Yin (Four Substances Wind-Dispersing Drink): Shengdi (Radix Rehmanniae preparata) 3 qian, Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) 2 qian, Jingjie (Herba Schizonepetae) and Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae) each 1.5 qian, Chishao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra), Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Baixianpi (Cortex Dictamni), Chantui (Periostracum Cicadae), Bohe (Herba Menthae) each 1 qian, Duhuo (Radix Angelicae Pubescentis), Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri) each 0.7 qian, Hongzao (Fructus Jujubae) 2 pieces. Decoct in water and take orally. This will surely be effective. This is an essential medicine for dispersing Wind-toxin.
Another prescription: Qingliang Gao (Cooling Ointment) (see section on Burns and Scalds) applied externally, yields miraculous results.
Another prescription: Malan Gao (Kalimeris Ointment): Treats newborn infants with Red Chi You Dan Du (Red Migratory Dan Toxin) with near-perfect success, and also treats adults with Dan toxin. Or when damp-heat lurks in the meridians of both legs, with no redness or swelling on the skin surface but exceptional pain, where the patient complains only of leg heat but feels extremely cold to others' touch, applying this ointment brings immediate cure. Repeated trials have verified its efficacy. Malantou (Kalimeris Indica herb, known as Malantou in Zhejiang, name unknown in other provinces) in any amount. In winter, roots can be used if leaves are absent. Wash with water to remove dirt, pound into paste, and apply.
Another prescription: Earthworms (also known as Qushan) several, placed in a bowl with white sugar, covered with a bowl lid. After half a day, at latest one day, they dissolve into liquid. Apply externally for extreme efficacy. If earthworms are unavailable, Tingyou (slugs, commonly known as鼻涕虫) can be used instead.
