At the initial stage, a single nodule appears, gradually enlarging to the size of a fist, hard as stone. Immediately administer Yanghe Decoction (Yanghe Tang) and Xihuang Pill (Xihuang Wan), taken alternately morning and evening daily, which can resolve it. If treatment is delayed until the nodule is as large as a sheng or dou (ancient volume units), remaining hard as stone but painless, and red veins appear on the surface after a long time, it becomes incurable. If macules appear on the skin, ulceration is imminent; bleeding for three days after ulceration will lead to death. If blue veins appear, it is treatable: internally take Yanghe Decoction (Yanghe Tang); externally apply fresh Phytolaccae Radix (Shanglu, 商陆) mashed with a small amount of salt. After several days, itching occurs; after half a month, the skin wrinkles. Daily application softens the mass. When an abscess sac hangs down, puncture it with a silver needle. Then take Qianjin Tuoli San (Qianjin Tuoli Powder) plus Shudi Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, 熟地黄) and Sheng Huangqi (Astragali Radix, 生黄芪) each at 1 liang, decocted and taken for ten doses. Afterwards, apply Yangjie Xiening Gao (Yangjie Xiening Plaster) externally, leaving the puncture site uncovered. Bind tightly with cloth to ensure the skin membrane remains connected. Internally take Shiquan Dabu Tang (Shiquan Dabu Decoction) or Baoyuan Tang (Baoyuan Decoction) (Renshen (Ginseng Radix, 人参) and Huangqi (Astragali Radix, 黄芪) both used raw). Continue taking until recovery (see formulas later). If toxic heat is not fully cleared, avoid tonifying agents. This is a secret method of Linwu Shanren.
Another prescription: Applying snake skin is also effective.
Large nodules are called E-he (Malignant Nucleus), small ones Tan-he (Phlegm Nucleus). They resemble the initial stage of Shi-ju (Stone Abscess), but the cold pathogen is more deeply congealed, and the root of toxicity is deep yet difficult to ulcerate. Before ulceration, avoid applying cooling plasters and taking cooling medicines. Internally taking Yanghe Decoction (Yanghe Tang) and Xihuang Pill (Xihuang Wan) can resolve them. Some use mashed large river snails applied topically to resolve them. Incision is strictly forbidden. If incision has already been performed and the wound is hard and painful, treat according to the formulas for hard and painful wounds in the "Miscellaneous Treatments for Carbuncles and Toxins" section. Continue internally administering warming, tonifying, pus-expelling, and phlegm-resolving agents. Xihuang Pill (Xihuang Wan) can achieve success; it has been tested repeatedly with miraculous effects. The pill contains Moschus (Shexiang, 麝香), so it is contraindicated in pregnancy (see formulas later). This is a secret method of Linwu Shanren.
This condition mostly occurs above the shoulder blades. Initially, there is slight swelling with unchanged skin color. Over time, it gradually enlarges, becoming hard as stone, immovable upon pushing, and unyielding upon pressing. The symptoms are identical to Shi-ju (Stone Abscess); immediately treat with the formulas for Shi-ju (Stone Abscess).
This refers to Luo-li (Scrofula). Small ones are called Luo-li, large ones Ma-dao (Horse Knife). There are many names: Tan-luo (Phlegm Scrofula) at the front of the neck, Shi-luo (Dampness Scrofula) at the back of the neck, soft on both sides that swell upon anger are Qi-yi (Qi Goiter), hard with contracted tendons are Jin-bi (Tendon Bi), and those linked like beads are Luo-li (Scrofula). There is also Ma-dao (long-shaped). Regarding Zi-mu chuan (Mother-Child Transmission): For Luo-li (Scrofula) not yet broken, use Zilong Wan (Zilong Pill) (see later), take 3 fen per dose, delivered with light ginger soup, three times daily, until resolved. If Luo-li (Scrofula) has internal ulceration, with some suppurating but not broken, or not yet suppurating, take Xihuang Pill (Xihuang Wan) (see later) to stop pain from existing ulcers, take warming tonics, and avoid unsuitable pills. If skin rots extending to the throat, take the tip of the middle finger bone... cover with plaster, wash externally with Schizonepetae Herba (Jingjie, 荆芥) decoction. The above methods are secret methods of Linwu Shanren.
Yinyou Gao (Silver Glaze Plaster): Treats Luo-li (Scrofula) and all nameless swellings and toxins, whether broken or not, and also treats lower back pain, with extreme efficacy. First, boil one jin of pure sesame oil slowly over low fire. Add four liang of Yinyou (Silver Glaze/Lead Oxide). Stir continuously with mulberry branches. When green smoke rises, add five liang of Huangdan (Red Lead). Boil until it forms pearls when dropped into water. Soak in water for one to two months to remove fire qi. Apply to the affected area using cloth.
Another prescription: Mash one copper coin with Tingyou Chong (Dragonfly Larvae/Aquatic Snails, i.e., slugs without shells, commonly known as鼻涕虫) until the copper dissolves. Apply topically for immediate cure.
Another prescription: Three liang of Black Lead (Heiqian, 黑铅), stir-fried into charcoal, mixed evenly with vinegar, spread on old cloth, and applied. Change once daily. After half a month, if there is no pain or breaking, it resolves internally and heals.
Another prescription: Boil high-quality aged vinegar until it forms pearls when dropped into water. Add one qian of powder from Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 半夏) raw. Mix evenly and apply. Change overnight. It resolves in two days with miraculous effect.
Another prescription: XiaKukucao (Prunellae Spica, 夏枯草), Jinyinhua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos, 金银花), and Pugongying (Taraxaci Herba, 蒲公英) each at five qian. Decoct with wine and water. Drink frequently as tea. Named Sanmiao San (Sanmiao Powder). Treats tuberculous Luo-li (Scrofula) distributed along the neck. It resolves in ten days of intake. If it recurs, massage Jianjing (GB21) (located between the two bones at the shoulder end) and Quchi (LI11) (located on the lateral side of the elbow)...
Another prescription: Yuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix, 玄参 steamed), Mu Li (Ostreae Concha, 牡蛎 calcined and stir-fried with vinegar), and Bei Mu (Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus, 贝母 dehearted and smoked) each at four liang. Grind into powder. Make pills with refined honey. Take...
Another prescription: For Luo-li (Scrofula) that has already broken, make a paste of flour and apply it to the broken area. Use two small clay pots. Pour wine into them, boil to evaporate the wine, then place the hot pot mouths over the flour paste to fumigate the sore, similar to cupping. Replace with another hot pot when one cools down. Repeat several times until all toxic heat is extracted, then it heals. After fumigation, apply pig gallbladder boiled into a plaster to the wound for miraculous effect.
Another prescription, Jicheng Baiyu Dan (Jicheng White Jade Pill): Specifically treats ruptured Luo-li (Scrofula) extending to the chest and axilla, with foul odor, persisting for over ten years. The medicine brings about recovery instantly with miraculous effect. Take a piece of newly kiln-fired Duan Shi (Calcined Stone), dissolve with water into powder. Mix evenly with pure raw Tung Oil to a moderate consistency. First, wash the area with decoction of Sichuan Pepper and Scallion. Apply this mixture.
Another prescription: Jingjie (Schizonepetae Herba, 荆芥) (use the part near the root, must be purchased from pharmacy for authenticity). Cut into pieces, decoct in water. Wash warmly for a long time. Observe if the rotten/broken area turns purple... continue until healed. Treats all cases where Luo-li (Scrofula) extends to the chest, axilla, shoulders, and neck, causing immobility, persisting for four to five years, with miraculous effect.
Another prescription, Bingsi San (Bingsi Powder): Five large river snails (shell removed, threaded and sun-dried), one qian two fen of Bai Pi (Realgar/White Arsenic, 白砒 wrapped in dough and baked cooked). Top... Luo-li... form a cake... nucleus adheres naturally.
Another prescription: Hong Gaoyao (Red Plaster) and Lv Gaoyao (Green Plaster) (see formulas for carbuncles and toxins). Can resolve before breaking, can extract the root nucleus after breaking. Both are extremely effective.
Another prescription: For ruptured Luo-li (Scrofula) showing black veins like iron wires, named Tie-xian Yang (Iron Wire Ulcer), it is the most difficult to treat. Use forceps to pull out the vein head, slowly pulling it out, varying in length from one or two chi to several chi. Must completely extract the root of the vein to eradicate the disease.
