Suanmu (Cnidium Fruit), 3 qian; Qulou Shugen (Root Bark of Toosendan Tree), 3 qian; Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), 2 qian; Sheng Gancao (Raw Licorice Root), 1 qian; Zaojiao (Gleditsia Sinensis Fruit), 5 fen. Grind all ingredients into a fine powder, mix with refined honey to form suppositories, insert into the anus, and allow them to melt naturally. Itching will cease and healing will occur after one or two applications; this is truly a miraculous formula. It is particularly effective for cases caused by childhood pranks or teasing.
External treatment methods for urinary retention can be universally applied to constipation, regardless of deficiency or heat patterns.
Three scallion heads with roots, one piece of ginger, 1 qian of salt, and more than ten grains of Douchi (Fermented Soybeans). Pound these ingredients into a cake, warm it, apply to the umbilicus, and secure tightly for a while. Once the qi flows freely, recovery occurs. If still obstructed, reapplication will surely be effective.
Another prescription: Stir-fry table salt until hot, fill the umbilicus with it, and moxa-burn five times to restore patency.
Yet another prescription: Constipation often results from unclear cold-heat dynamics. Take an old ginger slice about one cun long and finger-thick, wrap it in paper, roast it in fire until hot, remove, dip in sesame oil, and insert into the anus. Patency will be achieved within half a day at the fastest, or one day at the slowest. This formula is excellent and should not be underestimated.
Another prescription: Zhang Zhongjing's *Shanghan Lun* states: In Yangming disease (a syndrome characterized by excess heat in the stomach and intestines), spontaneous sweating and frequent urination indicate that body fluids are exhausted internally. Use two he of honey, simmer gently in a copper vessel, shape into suppositories while hot (size of a finger, length approx. 1.5 cun), let cool, coat with oil, and insert into the anus. Passage will occur shortly thereafter. Alternatively, add Zaojiao (Gleditsia Sinensis Fruit) and Xixin (Asarum Root), grind into powder, mix a small amount with honey to form suppositories; the effect is even faster, proving reliable through repeated trials.
Another prescription: Songziren (Pine Seed Kernel), Baiziren (Biota Seed), and Zhima (Sesame Seed) [all defatted] in equal parts. Grind into a paste, bind with white beeswax into pills the size of a Chinese quince seed. Take 50 pills per dose.
Another prescription: Su Zi (Perilla Fruit) and Zhima (Sesame Seed) in equal halves. Grind extremely finely, then process with water to extract juice. Boil one bowl of this juice with rice to make porridge and eat. This formula is very safe and highly effective. It is especially suitable for the elderly with qi deficiency, those with chronic illness, or postpartum women who cannot tolerate strong medications.
Another prescription: A patient suffered from tenesmus and constipation, accompanied by scanty, dark yellow urine. Medications for purging fire and promoting diuresis were ineffective. Later, Liuwei Dihuang Tang (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill) was administered with Fuzi (Aconite Lateral Root) 1 qian and Rougui (Cinnamon Bark) 5 fen, resulting in cure after one dose. This was due to deficiency-cold causing failure of qi transmission. For such symptoms, if solid heat is ruled out upon careful examination, this method should be followed for guaranteed efficacy. After recovery, Jinkui Shenqi Wan (Kidney Qi Pill from the Golden Cabinet) should be taken. If high-quality Rougui is unavailable, Paojiang (Prepared Ginger) may substitute. Both Liuwei Dihuang Tang and Jinkui Shenqi Wan formulas are detailed in other internal and external reference texts.
