Hou'e (Throat Swallow), Houbi (Throat Closure), and Chanhoufeng (Coiling Throat Wind) are all referred to as Houbi (Throat Bi syndrome, a disease characterized by obstruction and numbness in the throat). "Bi" means insensibility or numbness. This condition arises suddenly within moments and is critical. Phlegm rattles in the throat, sounding like snoring; the tongue coating is white without swelling. Various medical texts describe this as "Lung Jue" (Extinction of Lung Qi), deeming it incurable. This is likely due to death caused by the mistaken administration of cold-natured medicines. Administration of Guijiang Tang results in immediate recovery.
Guijiang Tang: Treats Houbi that arises suddenly without other accompanying symptoms; this is a syndrome of deficiency-cold and Yin fire (deficient Yang floating upward). 0.5 fen each of Cinnamomi Cortex (Rougui, 肉桂), Zingiberis Rhizoma Preparatum (Paojiang, 炮姜), and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草). Place them together in a bowl, pour boiling water into it, and keep the bowl immersed in boiling water to maintain heat. Take the medicine over the course of about one meal time, swallowing slowly, resulting in immediate recovery. Alternatively, use raw Aconiti Lateralis Radix (Sheng Fuzi, 生附子) sliced, coated with honey, and roasted thoroughly until black. Store for later use. When needed, take a grain-sized piece (size of a mung bean), hold it in the mouth, and swallow saliva. Full recovery occurs instantly. This is an experience from Linwu Shanshan; it is suitable even in summer months. Do not hesitate and cause self-harm through delay.
This syndrome presents with heat accumulation inside the throat and swelling outside the throat, accompanied by numbness and itching, feeling as if a snake is coiling around the neck. The body experiences alternating chills and fever, and the head and eyes swell and hurt. This is identified when phlegm fills the interior of the throat, covering the tongue. If this phlegm cannot be expelled, teeth chatter, and sounds resemble snoring. These symptoms occur when Houbi is mistakenly treated with cooling medicines. If delayed further, phlegm blocks the nostrils, preventing breath from entering or exiting, leading to death. Treat according to the previous prescriptions for Hou'e, including Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina (Zaojiao, 皂角) and Verniciae Fructus Oil (Tongyou, 桐油). Continue using Guijiang Tang (see above) for regulation and peace.
When this syndrome erupts, there is aversion to cold and heat, no visible external signs, shortness of breath, redness and swelling on the chest, and coldness in both feet. This is because there is heat in the Kidney meridian, and Kidney water is depleted, failing to moisten upwards. Self-healing can be achieved by following the treatment method for Wai-chanhoufeng (External Coiling Throat Wind) mentioned previously. If red threads appear in the anterior heart region, it is crucial to prick and break them with a needle. If the throat gate produces sounds like thunder, it is difficult [to cure].
