Eyes closed, not during deep sleep, but refers to the condition where both eyes are automatically closed before falling asleep. The fire in the Spleen Meridian is vigorous and has not been cleared and dissipated. This symptom is mostly seen after the peak of eruption and during the resolution phase. It is urgent to employ methods that promote urination and clear heat from the Upper Jiao (Upper Burner).
The syndrome of eye closure does not refer to the eyes being tightly shut during sound sleep, but rather that the eyes close automatically while the patient is not yet asleep. This symptom is common during the Zheng Shou (peak eruption period) and after the resolution. This is because the fire in the Spleen Meridian is vigorous and has not subsided. Treatment should focus on clearing heat from the Upper Jiao, with promoting urination as an urgent adjunct. Use Xie Bai San (Pearl White Decoction), adding Mu Tong (Akebiae Caulis), Bo He Ye (Menthae Haplocalycis Folium), Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix), Niu Bang Zi (Arctii Fructus), Lian Qiao (Forsythiae Fructus), and Jing Jie (Schizonepetae Spica) for treatment. Once the fire recedes, the eyes will naturally open. One might ask: Since Spleen Fire is vigorous, Xie Huang San (Yellow Decoction for Draining) should be used; why is Xie Bai San used here? The answer is: Earth (Spleen) is the mother of Metal (Lung). According to the principle "when excess, drain its child," one should drain the Lung (Metal) to treat the Spleen (Earth).
Zhu stated: The syndrome of eye closure can also result from excessive consumption of cooling agents. The Taiyin (Spleen) governs opening. Excessive use of cooling herbs consumes Spleen Yang, causing a loss of the Taiyin's function of opening.
Xie Bai San (Pearl White Decoction) treats Lung Heat cough and heat in the palms and soles.
Ingredients: Sang Bai Pi (Cortex Mori Radicis, steamed with Ginger Juice), Di Gu Pi (Cortex Lycii Radicis, heart removed), each 1 liang; Zhi Gan Cao (Prepared Licorice Root) 5 qian; Dan Zhu Ye (Lophatheri Herba) 1 handful; Nu Mi (Glutinous Rice) 100 grains as a guide. Decoct in water and take orally. If Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) and Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix) are added, it is also called Jia Wei Xie Bai San (Modified Pearl White Decoction). If there is heat, add Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) and Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix). One might ask: Di Gu皮 (Cortex Lycii Radicis) is a herb for the Qi aspect of the Triple Burner; what is the rationale for using it in Xie Bai San? The answer is: The Triple Burner belongs to the Kidney, and the Kidney is the child of the Lung. This also follows the principle "when excess, drain its child."
Excessive eye discharge (discharge and tears) inherently belongs to Heat syndromes, indicating that the fire in the Spleen and Lung meridians has not yet subsided. Regardless of whether it is the initial stage or the resolution phase, it is urgent to clear and descend the fire of the Liver and Spleen.
Eye discharge (discharge and tears) occurs due to severe fire in the Spleen and Lung. Upon observing this symptom, regardless of the disease stage, one must immediately clear and descend the fire of the Liver and Spleen. Use Xie Bai San (see Article 75), remove Gan Cao (Licorice Root), and add Long Dan Cao (Gentianae Radix) for treatment.
The white part of the eye (sclera) is connected to the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian. Initial redness and heat belong to this meridian. If redness persists during the peak eruption and after resolution, it indicates that Wind-Heat in the Lung has not yet been cleared.
The white part of the eye belongs to the Lung. Currently, the eruption of measles corresponds precisely to this Zang organ (Lung). Therefore, during the initial fever, before the rash appears, if the eyes become red and hot, this is a normal sign. However, if after the eruption, during the peak phase, and after resolution, the sclera remains red, this is caused by the未尽 (lingering) Wind-Heat in the Lung Meridian. It is urgent to clear the Lung and drain fire. Use Xie Bai San (see Article 75), adding Jing Jie (Schizonepetae Spica), Bo He Ye (Menthae Haplocalycis Folium), Lian Qiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Yuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix), and Niu Bang Zi (Arctii Fructus) for treatment. If accompanied by swelling and pain due to redness, this is due to Wind-Heat obstructing upwards. Use Jia Wei Dao Chi San (Modified Guide Out Red Decoction) (see Article 49), adding Jing Jie (Schizonepetae Spica) for treatment.
Zhu stated: For any redness and heat of the sclera caused by Wind-Heat, both of these formulas can be effective.
