The eruption of measles originates from the blazing fire of the Heart. If the Bing-Zi (Bing Zi) qi counter-attacks Ren-Gui (Ren Gui, referring to Kidney Water), it leads to night blindness (Que Mang, a condition characterized by poor vision in dim light or at dusk) after the measles. Treatment should refer to Zhao Yue Ye Ling Si Liu Tang.
Night blindness refers to the inability to see objects when dusk arrives. It is also known as "Chicken Eye Blindness" or "Gao Feng Zhang." The classics state: "The eyes can see only when nourished by blood." This condition arises from Liver Blood deficiency and insufficiency, compounded by rampant Fire pathogenic factors that consume Kidney Water (Ren-Gui), leading to the depletion of body fluids and blood, thereby causing night blindness. Since dusk belongs to the time when Yin energy increases, vision fails at this time. The treatment method should employ Si Wu Tang (see Article 25) combined with Liu Wei Di Huang Tang, adding Shi Jue Ming (Haliotidis Concha) and Ye Ming Sha (Cacumen Typhonii) as the principal herbs. Alternatively, Zhao Yue Yin or Jue Ming Ye Ling San may be used for treatment.
[Liu Wei Di Huang Tang]
Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix, 1 qian) Shan Zhu Yu (Corni Fructus, 5 fen) Huai Shan Yao (Chinese Yam Rhizome, stir-fried, 5 fen) Bai Fu Ling (Poria, 7.5 li) Mu Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex, 7.5 li) Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma, 7.5 li)
Decoct in water. Take on an empty stomach.
[Zhao Yue Yin]
Effective immediately for night blindness.
Zhen Xiong Huang (Real Realgar, finely ground and processed by water flotation)
Cut open a live chicken, take out the hot liver, pound it until extremely fine, add 5 li of Realgar powder, and take with warm wine.
[Jue Ming Ye Ling San]
Treats eye disorders in men, women, adults, and children, where vision becomes blurry at dusk. Even with lamplight or moonlight at night, one cannot see objects. (Mr. Zhu said: This prescription has remarkable effects for treating night blindness, but one must consume plenty of animal liver.)
Shi Jue Ming (Stir-fried Haliotidis Concha) Ye Ming Sha (Typhonii Cacumen, washed clean, each 2 liang) Gong Zhu Gan (Male Pig Liver, 1 liang; note: do not use sow's liver or liver from pigs suffering from plague; using castrated sheep's liver is even better.)
Do not let the liver touch iron vessels. Cut the liver into two slices with a bamboo knife. Spread the herbal powder on one slice, cover with the second slice, tie tightly with thread to prevent leakage of powder. Place in a clay pot, add one large bowl of rice washing water, and boil the liver. When the rice water reduces to slightly less than half a bowl, remove from heat. At bedtime, consume both the medicated liver and the broth together.
In the aforementioned formula, Shi Jue Ming stabilizes the Kidney and benefits Essence, serving as the Sovereign herb; Ye Ming Sha raises Yang and addresses night vision issues, serving as the Minister herb; Rice washing water regulates the Spleen and Stomach, serving as the Assistant herb; The liver matches the nature of the disease/herbs, guiding the action into the Liver Meridian, serving as the Envoy herb.
