Jue syndrome accompanied by pain in the spine extending to the vertex. The head feels heavy and dull. The eyes are blurred and unclear. The waist and spine are stiff and rigid. Treatment should select the blood collaterals of the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Channel. ("KT" is pronounced like "Huang").
This discusses miscellaneous diseases caused by pathogenic qi invading the channels leading to Qi rebellion (Qi Ni). The meridian of the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Channel originates at the inner canthus, ascends to the forehead, intersects at the vertex; from the vertex it enters to connect with the brain; re-emerges descending separately through the nape; runs alongside the spine, reaching the middle of the waist. The Qi of the Taiyang channel primarily governs the skin and surface. When external pathogens initially injure the Taiyang channel, it causes meridian Qi rebellion, resulting in diseases of the head, eyes, nape, and spine. Therefore, one should select the blood collaterals within the Foot-Taiyang channel to drain the pathogen. "Chen" (heavy) implies a sensation of heaviness. Mo Yuncong stated: Deficient pathogens invade humans, first starting at the hair follicles and skin. Since the Qi of the Taiyang channel governs the exterior, its disorders are discussed first.
Jue syndrome manifests as chest fullness and facial swelling, lips moist and dripping, sudden difficulty in speaking, and in severe cases, complete inability to speak. Treatment should select the Foot-Yangming Stomach Channel.
The meridian of the Foot-Yangming Stomach Channel originates at the sides of the nose, intersects at the root of the nose, circles the lips, follows the throat, enters the clavicular fossa (Quepen), passes through the diaphragm. The classic states: "If pathogens strike the face, they descend to the Yangming channel." This is because pathogens striking the skin of the face cause facial swelling; descending into the Yangming channel results in symptoms such as chest fullness and moist lips. The throat is the passage for Qi to ascend and descend. The Foot-Yangming meridian follows the throat; if Qi rebels, the Qi mechanism becomes obstructed, causing sudden difficulty in speaking or even total inability to speak. At this time, one should select the Foot-Yangming channel to drain the pathogen.
Jue Qi rushing to the throat causing inability to speak, cold hands and feet, and difficult defecation. Treatment should select the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Channel.
This describes Jue reversal caused by pathogens invading the Qi of the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Channel. The meridian of the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Channel follows the throat and flanks the base of the tongue. Jue Qi rebelling upward to the throat causes inability to speak. The Kidney is the source of generating Qi; Qi rebellion causes cold hands and feet. The Kidney opens into the two yin orifices (anterior and posterior), causing difficult defecation. One should select the Foot-Shaoyin channel to unblock the rebellious Qi.
Jue syndrome manifesting as abdominal distension and discomfort, accompanied by excessive cold Qi, borborygmus sounding like grain rolling, and difficult urination and defecation. Treatment should select the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Channel. ("HT" is pronounced like "Gu").
This describes external pathogens pressing upon the Taiyin channel, causing Taiyin Qi to rebel and produce these symptoms. The abdomen is the enclosure of Spleen Earth; Qi rebelling internally causes abdominal distension. Taiyin damp-earth governs the Qi, being the extreme Yin within Yin, hence there is much cold Qi and sounds like flowing water/moisture. If Earth Qi does not ascend, Heaven Qi does not descend, causing difficult urination and defecation. One should select the Foot-Taiyin channel to dissipate the rebellious Qi. Dry throat, heat in the mouth feeling like sticky glue. Treatment should select the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Channel.
The term "Jue" refers to conditions where disease is below but Qi rebels below, or disease is below but Jue Qi rebels upward. As in the previous section, Jue Qi rushing to the throat causing inability to speak is Shaoyin Qi rebelling upward to the throat. Here, pathogens invade Shaoyin Qi, and Qi rebels/stagnates below. The Water and Fire Qi of Heart and Kidney should intersect上下 (up and down). If Shaoyin Qi rebels below and fails to intersect with the Heart, Fire-Heat becomes excessive, causing dry throat and heat in the mouth like sticky glue. One should select the Foot-Shaoyin channel to dissipate rebellious Qi and facilitate the ascent of Water-Yin to nourish the Heart.
Pain in the middle of the knee. Treatment should take the Dubi (ST35) acupoint using a Yuanli needle. After inserting, leave it in for an interval before removing. The needle body is thick, resembling ox tail hair (" " pronounced Li, referring to ox tail hair), inserting into the knee without doubt.
Note: The above five sections discuss pathogens invading Yin and Yang Qi causing Qi rebellion. Even if meridian symptoms appear, the pathogen is in the Qi level affecting the meridians. The following sections re-discuss pathogens entering the meridians, causing meridian Jue reversal. Hence, "needle thick as ox tail hair," inserting into the knee is certain. The *Treatise on Nine Needles* states: "The six correspond to musical pitches." Pitches regulate Yin-Yang and the four seasons, aligning with the twelve meridians. When deficient pathogens invade the meridians causing acute Bi syndrome, the therapeutic needle must have a tip like ox tail hair, round yet sharp, slightly thicker in the middle, to extract acute pathogenic Qi. This describes pathogens invading the Foot-Yangming channel causing knee pain; using a needle like ox tail hair to puncture the knee is undoubtedly correct. It means that when pathogens are in the Qi level causing Qi rebellion, one should select Qi points; when pathogens invade the meridians causing meridian pain, one should select Meridian points. " " (Li) refers to ox tail hair. Zhang Kai said: Acute Bi syndrome does not transfer from the Qi level but directly strikes the vessels forming Vessel Bi. Dubi is an acupoint of the Foot-Yangming Stomach Channel; since it is not due to Qi-level pathology, it says "select Dubi" rather than "select Yangming." Selecting the Three Yang channels of the hand and foot below represents combined meridian Qi disorders.
Throat Bi causing inability to speak, select the Foot-Yangming Stomach Channel; if able to speak, select the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Channel.
Throat Bi refers to pathogens blocking the throat causing swelling and pain. The Foot-Yangming meridian follows the throat, flanking the larynx; thus, when pathogens block it, speech is impossible. One should select the Foot-Yangming channel. The Hand-Yangming meridian is located next to the side of the throat; thus, those who can speak should select the Hand-Yangming channel.
Malaria without thirst, occurring every other day, select the Foot-Yangming Stomach Channel; with thirst and occurring daily, select the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Channel.
Malarial Qi follows the meridians, sinking and internally pressing. Occurring every other day indicates the Qi resides deeply, internally pressing into Yin without emerging. The Foot-Yangming Stomach Channel belongs to the Stomach and connects to the Spleen, corresponding to Earth Qi below, with a long pathway, hence occurring every other day. Earth is Yin, hence no thirst. The Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Channel belongs to the Large Intestine and connects to the Lung, corresponding to Heaven Qi above, with a short pathway, hence occurring daily. Heaven is Yang, hence thirst. Shen Liangchen stated: According to the *Suwen Malaria Treatise*, those occurring every other day occur because pathogenic Qi and Wei Qi reside in the Six Fu organs, sometimes missing each other and failing to interact, so rest lasts several days until onset. The Hand-Yangming is the Fu organ of the Lung; Hand-Taiyang is the Fu organ of the Heart; Hand-Shaoyang is the Fu organ of the Pericardium. These three Fu organs govern Qi and Fire, responding to the upper part, hence thirst and daily onset. Foot-Yangming is the Fu organ of the Spleen; Foot-Taiyang is the Fu organ of the Kidney; Foot-Shaoyang is the Fu organ of the Liver. These three Fu organs govern Blood and Water, residing below, hence no thirst and every-other-day onset. Uniquely selecting Hand and Foot Yangming channels is because the Hand-Yangming governs the upper half of the body, and the Foot-Yangming governs the lower half.
Toothache not disliking cold drinks, select the Foot-Yangming Stomach Channel; disliking cold drinks, select the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Channel.
The meridians of Hand and Foot Yangming extensively connect to the upper and lower teeth. Foot-Yangming governs vigorous Heat Qi, hence not disliking cold drinks. Hand-Yangming governs clear Autumn Qi, hence disliking cold drinks. Mo Yuncong stated: Toothache is a disease of the Hand and Foot Yangming meridians. Whether one dislikes cold drinks depends on the Qi nature of Hand and Foot Yangming. This discusses Qi via the meridians, and selects meridians via Qi. How can the theory of meridian Qi separation and combination be ignored?
Deafness without pain, select the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Channel; deafness with pain, select the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Channel. (Note: "Yangming" here should likely be "Shaoyang").
The meridians of Hand and Foot Shaoyang both connect to the front and back of the ear, entering the ear canal. Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao embodies Ministerial Fire, hence deafness with pain. Mo Yuncong stated: This shares the same intent as the previous section.
Epistaxis not stopping, with dark coagulated blood, select the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Channel; with bright red flowing blood, select the Hand-Taiyang Small Intestine Channel; if not stopping, puncture below the Wangu (SI4) acupoint; if still not stopping, puncture [the vessel] in the wrist area to bleed. (" " pronounced Pei, same as "Wan", referring to the wrist).
Bleeding from the nose is called Epistaxis. When blood becomes foul and coagulates, appearing dark red/black, it is called [dark blood]. Injury to Yang collaterals causes epistaxis. The meridians of Hand and Foot Taiyang intersect and connect above the nose. Foot-Taiyang governs Water, hence dark coagulated blood flows. Hand-Taiyang governs Fire, hence bright red blood but does not flow easily. This is pathogens pressing on the Qi level of the skin/hair and forcing the collaterals. Thus, select Hand and Foot Taiyang to move Qi. If not stopping, puncture the Hand meridian below Wangu; if still not stopping, puncture the Foot meridian in the wrist area. Mo Yuncong stated: To take Qi, start with Foot channels then Hand channels; to take meridians, start with Hand channels then Foot channels. Meridian Qi circulates endlessly up and down.
Lower back pain. If the painful area feels cold, select Foot-Taiyang Bladder and Foot-Yangming Stomach channels. If the painful area feels hot, select Foot-Jueyin Liver channel. If unable to bend or extend, select Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder channel.
The meridians of Foot-Taiyang, Yangming, Shaoyang, and Jueyin all follow the lumbar spine upwards. Foot-Taiyang and Yangming govern Cold Water and Clear Metal Qi, hence for cold pain, select Foot-Taiyang and Yangming. Jueyin Wind-Wood governs Qi, embodying the Fire transformation of intermediate Shaoyang, hence for hot pain, select Foot-Jueyin. Inability to bend or extend indicates a fracture of the Shaoyang pivot, hence select Shaoyang. Shen Liangchen stated: The lumbar spine is the major joint of the body. Jueyin governs Spring, Shaoyang Summer, Yangming Autumn, Taiyang Winter. Reversal of Qi from cold and heat changes leads to lumbar spine diseases. Hence, uniquely select these four channels.
Internal heat with panting, select the blood collaterals in the [popliteal/femoral region] of the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Channel.
The ascending branch of the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Channel pierces the diaphragm, injects into the chest, enters the Lung and connects to the Heart. The descending branch follows the medial thigh, obliquely entering the [popliteal/femoral region]. Internal heat with panting occurs because Qi rebels below and cannot ascend to intersect with the Heart. Therefore, select the blood collaterals of the Foot-Jueyin Liver Channel [in the popliteal/femoral region]. Mo Yuncong stated: Dry throat and heat in the mouth like glue indicate Water and Fire Qi failing to intersect上下, hence select Foot-Shaoyin. Internal heat with panting indicates upper and lower meridians failing to intersect, hence select the blood collaterals in the [popliteal/femoral region].
Excessive joy/anger, desire to eat nothing, speech becoming quieter, select Foot-Taiyin Spleen channel. Anger with excessive talking, puncture Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder channel.
The following discusses miscellaneous diseases of internal Jue reversal caused by Yin-Yang imbalance, excessive joy/anger, diet, and lifestyle. Excessive joy injures the Heart; excessive anger injures the Liver. Food Qi enters the Stomach, distributing essence to Heart and Liver. Irregular diet causes Liver and Heart Qi to rebel, hence lack of appetite. The Five Tones correspond to Late Summer. Liver and Heart Qi rebellion causes Middle Qi stagnation, hence speech becomes quieter. One should select Foot-Taiyin to soothe Spleen Qi, allowing food Qi to transform and transport, making voice clearer. The Liver governs speech and its emotion is anger. Anger with excessive talking indicates Jueyin rebellious Qi is too severe; thus, select the intermediate Shaoyang to soothe Jueyin Qi.
Mandible pain, puncture Hand-Yangming Large Intestine channel, and bleed from the full vessels in the [cheek/jaw area]. (" " pronounced Kan).
This states that Qi rebellion of Hand and Foot Yangming meridians can both cause mandible pain. The Hand-Yangming meridian ascends from Quepen, passes through the neck, and penetrates the cheek. The Qi of Foot-Yangming ascends to the orifices, follows the eye system, emerges from [the temple], descends past Guest Master (Xiaguan), follows the jawbone, merges with Yangming, and descends together through Renying. The mandible is below the cheek and above Renying. This is Yangming Qi merging downward with the Yangming meridian causing mandible pain; hence it says "puncture the full vessels in the [cheek]" rather than "select Foot-Yangming." This is because Qi rebels in the [cheek] causing vessel fullness. Mo Yuncong stated: The Foot-Yangming meridian originates at the nose crossing [the bridge], enters the teeth, flanks the mouth circling the lips, crosses Chengjiang, follows Jiache, ascends before the ear, descends from Daying through Renying. Yangming Qi rushes upward to the head, travels to the orifices, follows the eye system, enters the brain, emerges from [the temple], descends past Guest Master, follows the jawbone downward, finally merging with the Yangming meridian and descending together through Renying.
Nape pain, unable to bend or extend, puncture Foot-Taiyang Bladder channel; unable to look back, puncture Hand-Taiyang Small Intestine channel.
The meridians of Hand and Foot Taiyang both follow the nape upwards, hence both can cause nape pain. The Foot-Taiyang meridian flanks the spine reaching the waist; hence inability to bend/extend requires selecting Foot-Taiyang. The Hand-Taiyang meridian winds around the scapula; hence inability to look back requires selecting Hand-Taiyang.
Lower abdominal fullness and enlargement, Qi moving upward to the Stomach and Heart, chills and fever alternating, difficult urination, select Foot-Jueyin Liver channel. Abdominal fullness, difficult defecation, abdominal enlargement, also moving upward to the chest and throat, panting with loud breathing, select Foot-Shaoyin Kidney channel. Abdominal fullness, undigested food, abdominal distension/discomfort, inability to defecate, select Foot-Taiyin Spleen channel.
The Qi of these three Yin channels rebels below, all causing abdominal fullness. The *Kouwen Chapter* states: All diseases begin from wind, rain, cold, heat, Yin-Yang, joy/anger, diet, lifestyle, great fright, or sudden fear, causing blood and Qi separation, Yin-Yang disruption, meridian Jue obstruction, vessel blockage, Yin-Yang reversal, blood and Qi disorder, losing normalcy. Fright/anger injures Foot-Jueyin Liver; sudden fear injures Foot-Shaoyin Kidney; irregular diet injures Foot-Taiyin Spleen. Organ Qi injury leads to meridian Jue obstruction and vessel blockage, resulting in distension/fullness. Foot-Jueyin Liver meridian reaches the lower abdomen, flanks the Stomach, pierces the diaphragm. Jueyin meridian Qi rebellion causes lower abdominal fullness/enlargement. Rebellious Qi moves upward to Stomach and Heart. Jueyin is Extreme Yin with initial generation of Yang, hence chills and fever variations. Liver governs free flow; difficult urination is due to Jueyin Qi rebellion. The Kidney is the gate of the Stomach, opening to the two orifices. Abdominal fullness and difficult defecation result from Kidney Qi rebellion blocking the gate. Foot-Shaoyin Kidney meridian pierces Liver/Diaphragm, enters Lung, follows throat. Qi rebellion affects the meridian, moving upward to chest/throat, causing loud panting. This is Shaoyin Qi rebellion. Foot-Taiyin governs transport of water and grain; Spleen Qi rebellion causes abdominal fullness and undigested food. Foot-Taiyin movement disease causes abdominal fullness, frequent belching, relief after passing gas/stool. Abdominal distension and inability to defecate indicate Qi rebellion in the center. Thus, select Foot Three Yin channels to unblock rebellious Qi.
Heart pain radiating to lumbar spine, desire to vomit, select Foot-Shaoyin Kidney channel.
The lumbar spine is the external mansion of the Kidney. Kidney and Stomach combine Wu-Gui. Heart pain radiating to lumbar spine with desire to vomit is Kidney Qi rebelling upward causing heart pain. Select Foot-Shaoyin.
Heart pain, abdominal fullness, aversion to cold, difficult defecation, select Foot-Taiyin Spleen channel.
"Sese" describes aversion to cold. Taiyin is Extreme Yin within Yin; excess Yin-Cold causes abdominal fullness and aversion to cold. Difficult defecation is due to failure of Earth Qi to transform. This is Foot-Taiyin Qi rebellion causing heart pain; select the home channel to soothe rebellious Qi.
Heart pain radiating to back, dyspnea, puncture Foot-Shaoyin Kidney channel; if ineffective, select Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao channel.
Kidney meridian from Kidney pierces diaphragm, enters Lung, emerges connecting to Heart. Heart pain radiating to back with dyspnea is Shaoyin meridian Qi rebelling upward causing heart pain. Puncture Foot-Shaoyin. If ineffective, it is Kidney Qi rebellion. Shaoyang is affiliated with Kidney; Sanjiao Qi originates in Kidney, spreading to chest. Select Hand-Shaoyang to drain rebellious Kidney Qi. Mo Yuncong stated: Puncturing Shaoyin meridian is called "puncture"; taking Shaoyang Qi is called "select".
Heart pain, radiating to lower abdominal fullness, moving up and down without fixed location, difficult urination and defecation, puncture Foot-Jueyin Liver channel.
Foot-Jueyin Liver meridian reaches lower abdomen, branches piercing diaphragm, ascends injecting into Lung. Heart pain radiating to lower abdominal fullness is Jueyin meridian Qi rebelling upward. Moving up/down without fixed location and difficult urination/defecation indicate Jueyin Qi rebellion. This is combined meridian Qi rebellion; puncture Foot-Jueyin meridian. Once meridians are open, Qi will be smooth.
Heart pain, only shortness of breath and insufficient respiration, puncture Hand-Taiyin Lung channel.
Lung governs Qi and respiration. Heart connection ascends to Lung. Heart pain with only shortness of breath indicates Qi rebellion in Lung causing heart pain. Puncture Hand-Taiyin to unblock rebellious Lung Qi. Shen Liangchen stated: Heart pain from Foot-Taiyin, Shaoyin, Jueyin is caused by organ Qi rebelling upward. Lung is the canopy of the Heart, hence only shortness of breath. This is disease in the Zang organ reflecting to the Heart. The same applies to the other four Zang organs, hence no fatal "True Heart Pain".
For heart pain, puncture at the side of the ninth vertebral segment. After puncturing and pressing, pain stops immediately; if not, seek above and below, finding the spot stops pain immediately.
This summarizes five types of heart pain caused by organ Qi overacting. "Ci" refers to the side of Shu points. "Ninth segment side" refers to Hunmen (BL47) beside Liver Shu. Liver stores Hun (Ethereal Soul); Heart stores Shen (Spirit). Hun and Shen accompany each other entering and exiting; thus, select Hunmen to unblock Heart Qi. Puncture then press; after withdrawing needle, press again to guide Qi smoothing, stopping heart pain immediately. Above the ninth segment is Geshuan (BL18) beside Diaphragm Shu; below is Yanggang (BL16) beside Gallbladder Shu. Heart Qi communicates externally from internal diaphragm; if ineffective, seek above to unblock Heart Spirit, below to soothe Hun Qi. "De zhi" means obtaining the Qi. *Jinkui Yuhan* states: Pathogens entering meridians and moving to Zang-Fu are internal causes. Previous chapter's Jue Heart Pain involves mutual overaction of Five Zang blood vessels, hence fatal True Heart Pain. This chapter involves Qi pain, so massage and guidance can stop it immediately. Previous chapter punctured blood vessels: Kunlun, Ran Gu, Yu Ji, Tai Yuan. This chapter takes Zang Qi: Taiyin, Jueyin, Shaoyin, Shaoyang. Shen Liangchen stated: Beside the seventh segment lies the "Small Heart". If rebellious Qi injures Heart Qi, circling leads to death; thus select Hunmen to unblock Heart Qi. Only if necessary seek Geshuan. Yu Borong stated: Previous chapter's Jue Heart Pain discusses meridian mutual overaction with Qi involvement; this chapter's Jue Qi pain involves meridians.
Cheek/Jaw pain, puncture Foot-Yangming Stomach channel at the curved artery, bleeding stops immediately; if not, press Renying on the meridian, stops immediately. (" " pronounced Kan, referring to cheek).
" " refers to the cheek. Cheek pain is pathogen injuring Yangming Qi. Yangming meridian curves between mouth, nose, chin, and cheek; thus select the curved artery of Yangming, bleeding stops immediately. This is Qi-level pathogen resolving with blood. If not, pressing Renying on the head stops it. The first three sentences discuss meridian Qi connectivity ("striking face descends to Yangming"). The last two discuss Yangming Qi rushing to head/orifices, emerging from [temple], following jawbone merging with Yangming, descending through Renying. Meaning: if not resolving from curved collaterals, guide into Renying descending, pain stops. Yangming centers in Earth, gathering all things; pathogens entering meridians exit via intestines/stomach. Yu Borong stated: Like Cold injuring Taiyang, severe cases require epistaxis to resolve; these are Qi-level pathogens resolving with blood. Mo Yuncong stated: Pressing Renying on the meridian initiates the following text, stating Yangming Qi ascends to head, descends from jawbone merging at Renying, following chest/abdomen Qi Street.
Qi rebelling upward, puncture depressions in the Ying (chest) and arteries in the lower chest.
Qi rebelling upward means Qi rises above without descending. The Ying-Chest area is where Foot-Yangming meridian runs. Puncturing makes upper rebellious Qi descend through the meridian. This states Yangming Qi descends from Renying to Ying, from Ying to lower chest, from lower chest to umbilicus.
Abdominal pain, puncture arteries left and right of umbilicus. After puncturing and pressing, pain stops; if not, puncture Qijie (Stomach Channel). After puncturing and pressing, pain stops.
Continuing above, discussing Yangming Qi descending along meridians. Foot-Yangming meridian descends from Ying-Chest, flanking umbilicus, entering Qijie. Abdominal pain is Yangming meridian Jue. Puncture arteries left/right of umbilicus. If not, puncture Qijie. Pressing stops it. Abdominal Qi has streets, interacting with Chong Mai at arteries left/right of umbilicus. Puncturing Qijie and pressing makes meridian rebellious Qi exit Qijie to the surface. This discusses Yangming Qi rushing to head/orifices, emerging from [temple], following jawbone merging with Yangming, descending through Renying, following Ying-Chest to Qijie at umbilicus. Yangming Qi enters/exits meridians internally/externally, circulating endlessly; slight stagnation causes pain/rebellion. Shen Liangchen stated: Yangming Qi descends directly from outer Renying to foot dorsum, penetrating twelve meridians; thus upper Renying and lower Chongyang pulsations are identical. Qijie is the path of Qi. Only when collaterals are blocked does Qi take alternate paths, not exclusively exiting Qijie. Hence first puncture arteries left/right of umbilicus; if not, then select Qijie.
Wei Jue (Atrophy-Reversal), bind the four extremities tightly, then quickly release. Twice daily. For numbness,知觉 returns in ten days. Do not rest; stop when cured. (" " pronounced Men, referring to binding knot).
