Yellow Emperor asked: When the ascending and descending of the Five Movements (Wu Yun) does not proceed as expected, and changes occur in the Qi intersection, violent stagnation (Baoyu) results. I have understood this situation. How can one preventively save living beings and remove these disasters?
The term "Que" means to remove. Why is it necessary to remove it?
Qibo bowed twice and replied: Your question is indeed profound! I have heard from my Master that since one understands the principles of Tian Yuan (Heavenly Origin), one must thoroughly master acupuncture methods. This can be used to subdue stagnation, support the operating Qi, tonify weakness, preserve true Qi, drain excess, eliminate residual pathogens, thereby removing this suffering.
Here, "Fuzi" refers to the ancestral master Qiu Daiji. "Zhe" means to subdue or break; "Fu" means to support; "Juan" means to clear away; "Si" means this; "Ling" means to cause... to remove this suffering.
Yellow Emperor said: I wish to hear this in detail.
Qibo said: If the ascending Qi cannot proceed forward, severe misfortune will occur. Wood Qi desires to ascend but is obstructed by Tian Zhu Star (Metal Qi). For Wood Qi to disperse its stagnation, it must wait for the appropriate time.
Wood's manifestation waits for the arrival of the Intermediary Qi (Jian Qi). When the time comes for Heaven to act as an Intermediary Qi, Wood Qi can manifest, and acupuncture treatment can be performed at this time.
One should puncture the Jing-Well point of the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian.
The Jing-Well point of the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian is Dazhun (LR1), located at the tip of the big toe, about the width of a leek leaf and among three hairs above the nail corner. This is where the Qi of the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian emerges. At dawn (Ping'an) during the first water clepsidera mark, press the acupoint with your hand until the arterial pulse is felt, then insert the needle.
The depth of insertion can reach 3 cun (subcun), retain the needle for six breaths. If Deqi (arrival of Qi) is obtained, withdraw the needle quickly. Puncture the left side first, then the right side. Alternatively, emesis can be induced on the Spring Equinox day, but this is outside the scope of acupuncture.
Fire Qi desires to ascend but is obstructed by Tian Peng Star (Water Qi). For Fire Qi to disperse its stagnation, it must wait for the appropriate time. Fire stagnation awaits the time when Heaven acts as the Left Intermediary Qi.
The manifestation of Jun Huo (Ministerial Fire/Emperor Fire) occurs at the Spring Equinox, and Xiang Huo (Ministerial Fire) occurs at Grain Full (Xiao Man). These are the times when they desire to manifest. Therefore, the treatment method for both Jun Huo and Xiang Huo is the same; pre-acupuncture can be performed two periods before their manifestation.
For both Jun Huo and Xiang Huo, puncture the Ying-Spring point of the Pericardium (Xin Bao Luo).
The Ying-Spring point of the Pericardium is Yinggong (Laogong, PC8), located in the center of the palm. At the second water clepsidera mark below, press the acupoint until the arterial pulse is palpable. Insert the needle to a depth of 3 subcun, retain for six breaths, and withdraw quickly upon obtaining Deqi. Puncture the left side first, then the right side. Another method is to induce sweating three times during spring.
Earth Qi desires to ascend but is obstructed by Tian Chong Star (Wood Qi). For Earth Qi to disperse its stagnation, it must wait for the appropriate time. Earth stagnation awaits the time when Heaven acts as the Left Intermediary Qi. The manifestation of Earth Qi often occurs during Chen hours (7-9 AM). Wei refers to the four corners (seasonal transitions); it tends to manifest more during the second interval of Wei. Pre-acupuncture can be performed.
One should puncture the Shu-Stream point of the Foot Taiyin Spleen Meridian.
The Shu-Stream point of the Foot Taiyin Spleen Meridian is Taibai (SP3), located in the depression below the medial malleolus (nuclear bone) on the medial side of the foot. This is where the Qi of the Foot Taiyin Spleen Meridian pours into. At the third water clepsidera mark below, insert the needle to a depth of 2 subcun, retain for seven breaths, and withdraw quickly when Qi arrives. Puncture the left side first, then the right side.
Metal Qi desires to ascend but is obstructed by Tian Ying Star (Fire Qi). For Metal Qi to disperse its stagnation, it must wait for the appropriate time. Metal stagnation awaits the time when Heaven acts as the Left Intermediary Qi. After the Summer Solstice, the time when Metal Qi desires to disperse stagnation is after Fire Qi becomes prosperous. Pre-acupuncture can be performed.
One should puncture the Jing-River point of the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian.
The Jing-River point of the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian is Jingqu (LU8), located in the depression at the radial pulse (Cunkou) of both wrists. This is where the Qi of the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian travels. With the arterial pulse palpable, at the fourth water clepsidera mark below, insert the needle to a depth of 3 subcun, retain for three breaths, and withdraw quickly when Qi arrives. Puncture the left side first, then the right side.
Water Qi desires to ascend but is obstructed by Tian Nei Star (Earth Qi). For Water Qi to disperse its stagnation, it must wait for the appropriate time. Water stagnation awaits the time when Heaven acts as the Left Intermediary Qi. It manifests after Chen Wei, when Fire Qi is prosperous. Pre-acupuncture can be performed.
One should puncture the He-Sea point of the Foot Shaoyin Kidney Meridian.
The He-Sea point of the Foot Shaoyin Kidney Meridian is Yingu (KI10), located behind the medial condyle of the knee, under the large tendon and above the small tendon. It is palpable upon pressure and found by flexing the knee. This is where the Qi of the Foot Shaoyin Kidney Meridian enters. Insert the needle to a depth of 4 subcun, retain for three breaths. When the moving Qi is palpable, puncture and withdraw quickly. Puncture the left side first, then the right side.
Yellow Emperor said: Ascending Qi failing to proceed can be prevented in advance. I wish to know what preventive measures can be taken for Descending Qi?
"Fang" means prevention/protection.
Qibo said: Having understood the principles of Ascension, one must necessarily understand Descent. The laws of Ascension and Descent can all be treated preventively.
Acupuncture can also be performed in advance based on the Ascension patterns.
Wood Qi desires to descend but is obstructed by Earth Qi (text missing character, context implies obstruction by specific Earth/Metal factors). Descending but not entering, being suppressed leads to stagnation. After dispersion, it can attain its position.
If it does not descend for three days, it will descend on the eighth day. Desire to descend but stagnation disperses first, then it manifests. This is the role of the Earth Intermediary Qi.
When descending stagnation manifests violently, it is like waiting for the time in Tian Jian. If it does not descend, the stagnation can be rapidly resolved.
If it does not descend, the urgency is like Tian Yu (Heavenly Stagnation). Acupuncture can be performed. To treat descent, one may subdue the element it overcomes (Sheng).
Subduing the superficial (Biao) empties the root (Ben). Therefore, subdue its overcoming element. One should puncture the emerging point of the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian, which corresponds to the entering point of the Hand Yangming Large Intestine Meridian.
The emerging point of the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian is Shaoshang (LU11), located at the medial tip of the thumb, about the width of a leek leaf above the nail corner. This is the Jing-Well point of the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian. Insert the needle to a depth of 1 subcun, retain for two breaths, and withdraw quickly.
The entering point of the Hand Yangming Large Intestine Meridian is Quchi (LI11), located in the depression between the two bones at the lateral end of the elbow when flexed. This is the He-Sea point of the Hand Yangming Large Intestine Meridian. Insert the needle to a depth of 1.5 cun, retain for seven breaths. When moving Qi is palpable and arrives, withdraw quickly.
Fire Qi desires to descend but is obstructed by Di Xuan (Water Qi). Descending but not entering, being suppressed leads to stagnation. Dispersion makes it acceptable.
If it does not descend for two days, it will descend on the seventh day. Desire to descend, stagnation disperses rapidly, and acupuncture can be performed.
One should subdue the element it overcomes to disperse its stagnation. Subduing Water resolves Fire stagnation.
One should puncture the emerging point of the Foot Shaoyin Kidney Meridian, which corresponds to the entering point of the Foot Taiyang Bladder Meridian.
The emerging point of the Foot Shaoyin Kidney Meridian is Yongquan (KI1), located in the depression of the sole of the foot, in the hollow formed by flexing the foot and curling the toes. This is the Jing-Well point of the Foot Shaoyin Kidney Meridian. Insert the needle to a depth of 3 subcun (Note: Text says 3 cun, likely error for 3 fen/subcun given context, translated literally as per instruction to follow text), retain for three breaths. When moving Qi arrives, withdraw quickly. Puncture the left side first, then the right side.
The entering point of the Foot Taiyang Bladder Meridian is Weizhong (BL40), located in the center of the popliteal crease, where the arterial pulse is palpable. This is the He-Sea point of the Foot Taiyang Bladder Meridian. Insert the needle to a depth of 5 subcun, retain for seven breaths. When Qi arrives, withdraw quickly. Puncture the left side first, then the right side. The second session follows the same method.
Earth Qi desires to descend but is obstructed by Di Cang (Wood Qi). Descending but not coming down, being suppressed leads to stagnation. After dispersion, it can enter.
If it does not descend for five days, it will descend on the tenth day. Desire to descend, stagnation disperses, and rapid acupuncture can be performed.
One should subdue the element it overcomes to disperse its stagnation. Subduing Water resolves Earth stagnation and removes its suffering.
One should puncture the emerging point of the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian, which corresponds to the entering point of the Foot Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian.
The emerging point of the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian is Dazhun (LR1), located at the tip of the big toe, about the width of a leek leaf and among three hairs above the nail corner. This is the Jing-Well point of the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian. Insert the needle to a depth of 3 subcun, retain for ten breaths, and withdraw quickly upon feeling moving Qi.
The entering point of the Foot Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian is Yanglingquan (GB34), located one subcun below the knee, in the depression lateral to the fibula. This is the He-Sea point of the Foot Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian. Insert the needle to a depth of 6 subcun, retain for ten breaths. When moving Qi arrives, withdraw quickly.
Metal Qi desires to descend but is obstructed by Di Tong (Fire Qi). Descending but not coming down, dispersing the suppression allows stagnation to dissipate and enter.
If it does not descend for four days, it will descend on the ninth day. Desire to descend, stagnation disperses, and rapid acupuncture can be performed. One should subdue the element it overcomes to disperse its stagnation.
Subduing Fire resolves Metal stagnation.
One should puncture the emerging point of the Pericardium, which corresponds to the entering point of the Hand Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian.
The emerging point of the Pericardium is Zhongchong (PC9), located at the tip of the middle finger, about the width of a leek leaf above the nail corner. This is the Jing-Well point of the Heart Conductor (Pericardium). Insert the needle to a depth of 1 subcun, retain for two breaths. When moving Qi arrives, withdraw quickly.
The entering point of the Hand Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian is Tianjing (TE10), located behind the lateral epicondyle of the elbow, one subcun posterior to the elbow, in the depression between the two tendons. Found by flexing the elbow, this is the He-Sea point of the Hand Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian. Insert the needle to a depth of 1 cun, retain for ten breaths. When moving Qi is palpable and arrives, withdraw quickly.
Water Qi desires to descend but is obstructed by Di Fu (Earth Qi). Descending but not coming down, being suppressed leads to stagnation. After dispersion, it can enter.
If it does not descend for one day, it will descend on the sixth day. Desire to descend, stagnation disperses, and acupuncture can be performed first.
One should subdue Earth to disperse its stagnation.
Subduing the element it overcomes disperses it.
One should puncture the emerging point of the Foot Taiyin Spleen Meridian, which corresponds to the entering point of the Foot Yangming Stomach Meridian.
The emerging point of the Foot Taiyin Spleen Meridian is Yinbai (SP1), located at the medial tip of the big toe, about the width of a leek leaf above the nail corner. This is the Jing-Well point of the Foot Taiyin Spleen Meridian. Insert the needle to a depth of 1 subcun, retain for three breaths. Withdraw when Qi arrives.
The entering point of the Foot Yangming Stomach Meridian is Zusanli (ST36), located three cun below the knee, lateral to the tibia, between the two tendons. This is the He-Sea point of the Foot Yangming Stomach Meridian. Insert the needle to a depth of 5 subcun, retain for ten breaths. Withdraw quickly when Qi arrives.
Yellow Emperor said: The arrival of the Five Movements has early and late timings. Their ascending and descending interactions involve mutual support and suppression. Can you explain this?
Regarding acupuncture methods, Qibo said: One should take the source of transformation (Hua Yuan). Therefore, for Excess conditions, drain them; for Deficiency conditions, tonify them. For Excess, drain it; subsequently, suppress its stagnation, take the source of its movement's transformation to reduce the stagnant Qi. For Deficiency, support and tonify to aid the operating Qi, thereby avoiding Empty Pathogens.
Deficiency conditions should be supported by their Hua Yuan to replenish their deficits, preventing the conquering element from attacking. The decree comes from secret teachings.
