Describes that the Five Movements (Wu Yun) possess regular laws akin to administrative decrees. With regularity comes change.
The Yellow Emperor asked: The Great Void is vast and distant, the Five Movements swirl and interact, their waxing and waning differ, and their increase and decrease follow one another. I wish to hear about the Balanced Qi (Ping Qi). How is it named? How is it recorded? (The Great Void refers to the empty and dark realm; Liao Kuo means profound and distant; Hui Bo means rotation; Shuai Sheng refers to excess and deficiency; with waxing and waning, increase and decrease follow. Balanced Qi is the record of the Year Meeting (Sui Hui), representing balanced Qi. Xu Zhen Gong said: At the beginning of the Five Movements, the Qi of Green, Red, Yellow, White, and Black permeates the Great Void, hence it is said: The Great Void is vast, the Five Movements swirl.)
Qibo replied: Your question is indeed illuminating! Wood's Balanced Qi is called Fu He (Spreading Harmony); Fire's Balanced Qi is called Sheng Ming (Ascending Brightness); Earth's Balanced Qi is called Bei Hua (Complete Transformation); Metal's Balanced Qi is called Shen Ping (Judicious Peace); Water's Balanced Qi is called Jing Shun (Quiet Compliance). (This speaks of the Balanced Qi of the Five Movements, each having its specific name. The East generates Wind, Wind generates Wood. When Wood is balanced, it spreads Yang-Harmonious Qi to generate all things. Fire's nature is flaming upward, its virtue is manifestly bright. Earth governs transformation, completing itself in all four directions. Metal governs肃杀 (severity and killing), achieving peace without arbitrary punishment. Water is clear and quiet, soft and compliant in nature.)
The Emperor asked: What if it is Deficient (Bu Ji)?
Qibo said: Wood's Deficiency is called Wei He (Withered Harmony); Fire's Deficiency is called Fu Ming (Hidden Brightness); Earth's Deficiency is called Bei Jian (Low Supervision); Metal's Deficiency is called Cong Ge (Following Change); Water's Deficiency is called He Liu (Dried Stream). (This speaks of the Deficient state of the Five Movements, each having its specific name. If Wood Qi is deficient, it cannot spread Yang-Harmonious Qi, leading to flaccidity. If Fire Qi is deficient, the command of brightness does not ascend but sinks. If Earth Qi is deficient, it remains low and rigid, unable to complete itself in all directions. Metal is inherently rigid; when deficient, it follows Fire and undergoes change. If Water Qi is deficient, its source dries up.)
The Emperor asked: What constitutes Excess (Tai Guo)?
Qibo said: Wood's Excess is called Fa Sheng (Vigorous Growth); Fire's Excess is called He Xi (Blazing Radiance); Earth's Excess is called Dun Fu (Thick Mound); Metal's Excess is called Jian Cheng (Solid Completion); Water's Excess is called Liu Yan (Overflowing Flow). (The Five Movements in Excess also have specific names. Wood Qi surplus leads to vigorous growth; He Xi is the image of blazing radiance; Dun means thick, Fu means high. Metal is solid and rigid, capable of completing things; Yan means full and overflowing.)
The Emperor asked: Regarding the records of these three states (Balanced, Deficient, Excess), I wish to hear their manifestations.
Qibo said: Your question is indeed thorough! In the Fu He Record (Wood's Balanced Qi), Wood Virtue circulates widely, Yang expands, Yin distributes, and the Five Transformations are open and peaceful. Its Qi is upright, its nature is compliant, its function is bending and straightening, its transformation brings prosperity, its category is Grass and Trees, its administration is dispersing, its climate is mild and warm, its command is Wind, its organ is Liver, the Liver fears Coolness, its orifice is the Eye, its grain is Hemp, its fruit is Plum, its substance has a pit, it corresponds to Spring, its insect is Hairy, its animal is Dog, its color is Cyan, it nourishes Tendons, its disease is internal tension and flank fullness, its taste is Sour, its note is Jue, its object is hard inside, its number is Eight. (Record refers to the year. Three Qi refer to Balanced Qi and Excess/Deficiency. Wood's balanced movement is Fu He. Wood Virtue circulating means Yang expands and Yin distributes. The five Qi of Generation, Growth, Transformation, Harvest, and Storage first rely on the announcement of Generating Qi. If Generating Qi is harmonious, all five Qi are balanced. Duan means upright; Sui means compliant; Qu Zhi is the form and function of Wood; Sheng Rong is Wood's generation and prosperity; Lei is biological category; Fa Sheng San Man is Wood's spreading administration; Wen He is Spring's climate; Wind in Heaven is Wood's command; in the Zang it is Liver; fearing Coolness because Wood fears Metal; in the orifice it is the Eye; in grain it is Hemp, resembling Wood, cyan in color; in fruit it is Plum, green and sour; pits contain kernels, split into two, representing Wood's origin; Hairy insects resemble dense vegetation; Dogs move bravely forward, responding to Spring's angry generating Qi; Liver governs Tendons, thus nourishing them; Internal tension and flank fullness are Liver diseases; Jue is the Wood note; Wood is born from Water, hard with many hearts, so objects are hard inside; Eight is the completion number of Wood.)
In the Sheng Ming Record (Fire's Balanced Qi), Correct Yang governs, virtue extends universally, and the Five Transformations are balanced. Its Qi is high, its nature is rapid, its function is burning and scorching, its transformation is luxuriant, its category is Fire, its administration is luminous, its climate is hot and summer-like, its command is Heat, its organ is Heart, the Heart fears Cold, its orifice is the Tongue, its grain is Wheat, its fruit is Apricot, its substance has veins, it corresponds to Summer, its insect is Feathered, its animal is Horse, its color is Red, it nourishes Blood, its disease is convulsion, its taste is Bitter, its note is Zhi, its object has veins, its number is Seven. (Fire is in the South, thus Correct Yang governs; Fire governs Yang Qi, thus virtue extends universally. Harmonious Yang Qi spreads in four directions, all Five Transformations are balanced, sensing Fire's transformation. Fire Qi flames upward, so its Qi is high; Fire's nature is restless, so its nature is rapid. Burning is Scorching, Fire's function. Luxuriant growth is Summer's transformation. All earthly Fire is similar to it. Ming Yao is Fire's spreading administration. Yan Shu is Summer's climate. Heat on earth is Fire's command. In the Zang it is Heart; fearing Cold because Fire fears Water. Heart opens to the Tongue. Wheat matures in Summer. Apricots are red and bitter. Luo refers to fruit veins. Feathered insects fly upward, sensing Fire's generating Qi. Horses belong to Wu, Fire's animal. Heart governs Blood vessels, thus nourishing Blood. Chong refers to twitching; meridions contract due to Fire Qi. Zhi is the Fire note. Ku is the Fire taste. Mai is the vein of objects. Seven is the completion number of Fire.)
In the Bei Hua Record (Earth's Balanced Qi), Qi cooperates with Heaven's blessing, Virtue flows to four directions, and the Five Transformations are cultivated together. Its Qi is level, its nature is smooth, its function covers high and low, its transformation is plump and full, its category is Earth, its administration is quiet, its climate is humid and steaming, its command is Dampness, its organ is Spleen, the Spleen fears Wind, its orifice is the Mouth, its grain is Millet, its fruit is Jujube, its substance has flesh, it corresponds to Late Summer, its insect is Naked (hairless/scaly/shelled), its animal is Ox, its color is Yellow, it nourishes Flesh/Muscle, its disease is obstruction/blockage, its taste is Sweet, its note is Gong, its object has skin/flesh, its number is Five. (Xie means cooperation. Heaven generates, Earth completes. Earth Qi is peaceful, combining Heaven's beauty to transform and generate all things. Earth Virtue flows to four directions, cultivating all Five Transformations. Ping Yi is Earth's Qi; Rou Shun is Earth's nature. High and Low are Earth's form, varying in transformation, which is Earth's function. Plump and overflowing is Wet Earth's transformation. Five directions and five soils are similar to it. Quiet transformation is Earth's administration. Ru Zheng is Late Summer's climate. Dampness in Heaven is Earth's command. In the Zang it governs Spleen; fearing Wind because Wood overcomes Earth. Spleen opens to the Mouth. Ji is a type of grain. Jujubes are yellow and sweet. Rou is fruit flesh. Luo insects are fleshy. Oxen are Earth's animals. Spleen governs muscles, thus nourishing them. Pi is Spleen disease in the middle, where upper and lower Qi do not intersect. Gong is the Central Earth note. Fu is object flesh. Five is the generation number of Earth. *Liu Yuan Zheng Ji Da Lun* says: Earth always uses generation.)
In the Shen Ping Record (Metal's Balanced Qi), Receiving without contention, Killing without violation, the Five Transformations are declared and clear. Its Qi is pure, its nature is rigid, its function is scattering, its transformation is firm and contracting, its category is Metal, its administration is stern and肃杀, its climate is clear and cutting, its command is Dryness, its organ is Lung, the Lung fears Heat, its orifice is the Nose, its grain is Rice, its fruit is Peach, its substance has a shell, it corresponds to Autumn, its insect is Armored, its animal is Rooster, its color is White, it nourishes Skin and Hair, its disease is Cough, its taste is Pungent, its note is Shang, its object is hard outside, its number is Nine. (Metal is a symbol of war. Metal Qi is peaceful, thus receiving without contention. Heaven and Earth's Qi: Spring generates, Autumn kills. Killing without violation means not harming creatures. Metal Qi is clear and肃杀, so the Five Transformations achieve declaration and clarity. White purity is Metal's Qi. Rigidity is Metal's nature. Scattering of all things is Metal's function. Contracting Qi is Autumn's transformation. The five metals are similar to it. Firm and stern is Metal's administration. Qing Qie is Autumn's climate. Dryness in Heaven is Metal's command. In the Zang it is Lung; fearing Heat because Metal fears Fire. Lung opens to the Nose. Rice matures in Autumn. Peaches are white and hairy, the Lung's fruit. Hard-shelled fruits and armored insects are born sensing rigid Qi. Roosters fight well, sensing肃杀 Qi. Lung governs Skin and Hair, thus nourishing them. Cough is a Lung disease. Shang is the Western note. Xin is Metal's taste. Among all things, they are hard outside like shells and armor. Nine is the completion number of Metal.)
In the Jing Shun Record (Water's Balanced Qi), Storing without harm, Governing by yielding downward, the Five Transformations are complete. Its Qi is bright, its nature is downward, its function is irrigating and overflowing, its transformation is condensed and firm, its category is Water, its administration is flowing and evolving, its climate is condensed and肃杀, its command is Cold, its organ is Kidney, the Kidney fears Dampness, its orifice is the Two Yin (urethra and anus), its grain is Beans, its fruit is Chestnut, its substance is moist, it corresponds to Winter, its insect is Scaled, its animal is Pig, its color is Black, it nourishes Marrow and Bone, its disease is Cold Extremities (Jue), its taste is Salty, its note is Yu, its object is moist, its number is Six. (Water's balanced movement is Jing Shun. All things grow lush with generating Qi; Water's movement is peaceful, thus governing Zang without harming things. Zheng means orderly. Governing peacefully and yielding downward makes the five Qi feel orderly. Heaven One generates Water, so its Qi is high/bright. Water flows downward, so its nature is downward. Wo means irrigation; Yan means overflow. Condensed firmness is Zang Qi's transformation. Earth's waters are similar to it. Flowing endlessly is Water's administration. Ning Su is Winter's climate. Cold in Heaven is Water's command. In the Zang it is Kidney; fearing Dampness because Water fears Earth. Kidney opens to the Two Yin. Beans are Water's grain. Chestnuts are black and salty, the Kidney's fruit. Ru means juicy/moist inside scales. Scaled insects are born in water. Zhi is the pig. Kidney governs Marrow and Bone, thus nourishing them. Jue means reversal/cold extremities. The Kidney is the source of Generating Qi, so disease causes cold hands and feet. Yu note belongs to Water. Six is the completion number of Water.)
Therefore, Generate without killing, Grow without punishing, Transform without restricting, Receive without harming, Store without suppressing—this is called Balanced Qi. (Thus, in Wood years, there is Generating Qi without Metal's肃杀; in Fire years, there is Growing Qi without Water's restriction; in Earth years, there is Transforming Qi without Wood's overcoming; in Metal years, there is Receiving Qi without Fire's destruction; in Water years, there is Zang Qi without Earth's suppression. This is called a Balanced Qi year.)
In the Wei He Record (Wood's Deficiency), it is called Sheng Sheng (Victory over Generation). Generating Qi does not administer, Transforming Qi rises, Growing Qi levels out, Receiving Command comes early. Cool rains fall on time, wind and clouds rise together. Grass and trees bloom late, turning dry and falling. Objects appear elegant and fill out internally. Its Qi contracts, its function gathers. Movement involves spasms, stiffness, and laxity. Onset involves fright and alarm. The organ is Liver. Fruits are Jujube and Plum. Substances have pits and shells. Grains are Millet and Rice. Tastes are Sour and Pungent. Colors are White and Cyan. Animals are Dog and Chicken. Insects are Hairy and Armored. Dominant phenomena are fog, dew, and chill. Sounds are Jue and Shang. Diseases include trembling, diarrhea, and fear. This follows Metal transformation. Shao Jue matches Ban Shang. Shang Jue matches Zheng Jue. Shang Shang matches Zheng Shang. Diseases include limb paralysis, carbuncles, sores, and ulcers. Sweet insects are harmed; evil injures the Liver. Shang Gong matches Zheng Gong. Desolate肃杀 leads to blazing heat. Disaster strikes the Third Palace (Zhen/East). This is called Repetition Qi (Fu Qi). Dominant signs include flying borers, maggots, pheasants, and thunder/lightning. (Ruan sound is soft, Li sound is sharp, Se sound is solemn. Wood Deficiency is Wei He, so the overcoming Qi wins over Generating Qi. Metal Qi wins, so Wood's Generating Qi cannot display its command. Wood command fails, so Earth Qi is unafraid, and Transforming Qi rises. Wood declines, so Fire Qi is not strong, thus Growing Qi levels out. Metal Qi is strong, so Receiving Command comes early. Coolness is Metal transformation, Wind is Wood transformation, Cloud/Rain is Earth transformation. Due to Wood Deficiency, Metal and Earth transformations mix. Generating Qi does not administer, so grass/trees bloom late. Receiving Command comes early, so they turn dry and fall. Transforming Qi and Autumn harvest Qi take exclusive command, so objects fill out. Contraction is Metal Qi. Generation/Gathering is Wood function. Movement is internal disease onset; Onset is external symptom appearance. Shortening is contraction; Li is twisting; Ju is stiffness; Huan is laxity—all tendon diseases. *Jin Gui Zhen Yan* says: East Liver Wood, disease manifests as fright. Organ is Liver. Fruits Jujube/Plum, substances Pit/Shell, grains Millet/Rice, tastes Sour/Pungent, colors White/Cyan, animals Dog/Chicken, insects Hairy/Armored, sounds Jue/Shang. Due to Wood Deficiency, it follows Metal/Earth. Fog/Dew/Chill is Metal victory. Trembling/Diarrhea/Fear is Liver disease, due to following Metal. Ban means half. Shao Jue matches Ban Shang refers to all Ding years (Wood Deficiency). Jue is Wood note. Wood Deficiency leads to Shao Jue. Metal shares office, so half matches Shang Metal. Shang Jue matches Zheng Jue refers to Ding Si and Ding Hai years, Upper Jue Yin rules Heaven, Wood Deficiency aided by Heaven, matching Fu He Zheng Jue. Shang Shang matches Zheng Shang refers to Ding Mao and Ding You years, Upper Yang Ming rules Heaven, called Shang Shang. Wood Deficiency, half Shang transformation, plus Yang Ming Heaven, Metal fully operates, matching Shen Ping Zheng Shang. Thus diseases: limb paralysis, carbuncles, etc., caused by Metal excess injuring Liver. Shang Gong matches Zheng Gong refers to Ding Chou and Ding Wei years, Upper Tai Yin rules Heaven, called Shang Gong. Wood Deficiency, Transforming Qi rises, aided by Heaven, Earth dominates, matching Bei Hua Record. Thus Shang Gong matches Zheng Gong. Xiao Se肃杀 is Metal excess. Blazing heat is Fire Repetition. Disaster strikes East Zhen position, called Repetition. Borers born in Wood, Flying is Fire image. Repetition means Fire born from Wood. Maggots become flies, liking warmth/hating cold, flying day/resting night. Pheasants are Li birds, all Fire Repetition Qi. Swift thunder is Ting. Wood depression extreme, Fire surrounds, Qi becomes Thunder/Lightning. *I Ching* says Zhen is Thunder.)
In the Fu Ming Record (Fire's Deficiency), it is called Sheng Chang (Victory over Growth). Growing Qi does not spread, Zang Qi reverses and spreads, Receiving Qi administers itself, Transforming Command balances. Cold/Clear frequently rises, Summer Command thins. Inheriting transformation generates, growing but not lengthening, maturing but immature, aging upon meeting transformation. Yang Qi is suppressed, hibernating insects hide early. Its Qi is depressed, its function is violent. Movement shows manifestation/suppression/change. Onset involves pain. The organ is Heart. Fruits are Chestnut and Peach. Substances have veins/moisture. Grains are Beans and Rice. Tastes are Bitter and Salty. Colors are Dark and Red. Animals are Horse and Pig. Insects are Feathered and Scaled. Dominant phenomena are Ice/Snow/Frost/Cold. Sounds are Zhi and Yu. Diseases include confusion, sorrow, and forgetfulness. This follows Water transformation. Shao Zhi matches Shao Yu. Shang Shang matches Zheng Shang. Evil injures Heart. Condensed cold leads to heavy rain/deluge. Disaster strikes Nine (Li/South). Dominant signs include sudden torrents, thunder shock, lingering rain. (Yin sound is yin. Fire Deficiency means Water wins Growth. Fire's Growing Qi does not spread, Fire's Zang Qi reverses. Fire Qi Fu Ming, so Metal has no fear, Receiving Qi governs itself. Fire Deficiency means generated Earth Qi is not strong, Transforming Command balances. Cold/Clear rises, Summer thins, Water wins Fire. Inheriting Earth's balancing transformation allows things to grow. Growing Qi not spreading means growing but not lengthening; immature objects mature quickly; aging upon Late Summer transformation. Cold/Clear rising suppresses Yang Qi. Zang Qi operating hides insects early. Qi depressed because Water controls Fire. Function violent because Fire desires to emit. Zhang is Fire's command. Manifestation/Suppression changes to Cold, causing Pain (Cold wins causes pain). Organ is Heart. Fruits Chestnut/Peach, substances Vein/Moist, grains Bean/Rice, tastes Bitter/Salty, colors Dark/Red, animals Horse/Pig, insects Feathered/Scaled, sounds Zhi/Yu. Due to Fire Deficiency, follows Metal/Water. Ice/Snow is Cold Water change. Confusion/Sorrow/Forgetfulness is Heart Spirit deficiency, due to following Water, Heart Fire亏损. Shao Zhi matches Shao Yu refers to all Gui years. Zhi is Fire note. Fire Deficiency is Shao Zhi. Water shares office, so Shao Zhi matches Xiao Yu. Shang Shang matches Zheng Shang refers to Gui Mao and Gui You years, Upper Yang Ming rules Heaven, called Shang Shang. Metal fearless, aided by Heaven, Fire cycle acts Shen Ping administration. Shang Shang year matches Zheng Shang Qi. Metal/Water both win, evil injures Heart. Condensed cold is Cold excess. Heavy rain is Earth Repetition. Disaster in Li South. Chen Qian is cloudy sky blocking sun. Sudden torrent/lingering rain is Earth change. Thunder shock is Fire depression emission.)
In the Bei Jian Record (Earth's Deficiency), it is called Jian Hua (Reduced Transformation). Transforming Qi does not command, Generating Administration alone shines. Growing Qi is orderly, Rain is delayed, Receiving Qi is balanced, Wind/Cold rise together. Grass/Trees flourish beautifully, bloom but do not bear fruit, mature but peel/fall. Its Qi is scattered, its function is static/stable. Movement involves ulceration, swelling, bursting, carbuncles, and sores. Onset involves dampness/stagnation. The organ is Spleen. Fruits are Plum and Chestnut. Substances are moist/pitted. Grains are Beans and Hemp. Tastes are Sour and Sweet. Colors are Cyan and Yellow. Animals are Ox and Dog. Insects are Naked and Hairy. Dominant phenomena are floating anger/vibration. Sounds are Gong and Jue. Diseases include retention/fullness/blockage. This follows Wood transformation. Shao Gong matches Shao Jue. Shang Gong matches Zheng Gong. Shang Jue matches Zheng Jue. Disease is undigested diarrhea, evil injures Spleen. Vibrating/swaying leads to drying/scattering. Disaster at Four Corners. Dominant signs include broken branches, tigers, wild wolves. Clear Qi is used, Generating Qi is humbled. (Earth Deficiency reduces Transforming Qi, Wood counter-wins. Transforming Qi cannot command, Generating Administration shines. Wood/Fire generate, so Growing Qi is orderly. Transforming Qi does not command, so Rain is delayed. Earth Deficiency, Receiving Qi balances. Wood/Water dominate, so Wind/Cold rise. Generating Qi shines, Growing Qi orderly, so grass/trees flourish. Transforming Qi does not command, so bloom but no fruit, mature but peel. Dispersing is Wood Qi. Static/Stable is Earth function. Ulceration/swelling results from rebellion in flesh理, causing carbuncles. Dampness/Stagnation is Water attacking Spleen disease. Organ is Spleen. Fruits Plum/Chestnut, substances Moist/Pit, grains Bean/Hemp, tastes Sour/Sweet, colors Cyan/Yellow, animals Ox/Dog, insects Naked/Hairy, sounds Gong/Jue. Due to Earth Deficiency, follows Water/Wood. Floating Anger/Vibration is Wood excess. Retention/Fullness/Blockage is Spleen Qi injury. Shao Gong matches Shao Jue refers to all Ji years. Gong is Earth note. Earth Deficiency is Shao Gong. Wood shares office, so Shao Gong matches Shao Jue. Shang Gong matches Zheng Gong refers to Ji Chou and Ji Wei years, Upper Tai Yin Damp Earth rules Heaven, called Shang Gong. Earth Deficiency aided by Heaven, Shao Gong cycle acts Bei Hua Qi, matching Zheng Gong. Shang Jue matches Zheng Jue refers to Ji Si and Ji Hai years.)
