When Jueyin Wind Wood is the ruling Qi of Heaven (Jueyin Si Tian, the disease pattern caused by the pathogenic factor invading the Jueyin meridian), it is called "Shang Jiao" (Upper Jueyin). In the cycles of Shao Gong (Insufficient Earth) and Shao Jiao (Insufficient Wood), because Wood receives assistance from the ruling Qi of Heaven, Wood becomes exclusively dominant. Therefore, it is the same as the year of Zheng Jiao (Balanced Wood). The diseases occurring are diarrhea with undigested food (Sun Xie, diarrhea characterized by undigested food in the stool), because the pathogen injures the Spleen.
The phenomenon of violent shaking and fluttering indicates excessive Wood Qi. The withering and falling of green trees indicate the recovery of Metal to control Wood. The disaster should occur in the four diagonal directions, which are the directions of Qian, Kun, Gen, and Xun. "San Zhe" (breaking and folding) refers to the function of Metal. Tigers and wolves are animals of the West (Metal). "Ru Qu" (humiliation and屈曲) means that when Metal Qi recovers, the administration suffers humiliation.
This describes the cycle of Cong Ge (Following Transformation/Metal Insufficiency). It is called "Zhe Shou" (Broken Harvest). The Qi of harvesting arrives late, while the Qi of growth rises vigorously. The virtues of growth and transformation combine, allowing the Fire administration to be proclaimed, and all things flourish. Its Qi is rising. Its function is restless and urgent. Its movement manifests as stifled voice, dizziness, and cold limbs. Its onset involves cough and wheezing. The affected organ is the Lung. Its fruits are plums and apricots. Its solid parts have shells or networks. Its grains are hemp and wheat. Its tastes are bitter and pungent. Its colors are white and cinnabar red. Its livestock are chickens and sheep. Its insects are those with shells and wings. Its ruling star is bright and scorching. Its sound is Shang (Metal) and Zhi (Fire). Its diseases include sneezing, coughing, nasal congestion, and epistaxis. These symptoms arise from transforming into Fire.
Shao Shang (Insufficient Metal) is similar to Shao Zhi (Insufficient Fire). Shang Shang (Excessive Metal) is the same as Zheng Shang (Balanced Metal). Shang Jiao (Excessive Wood) is the same as Zheng Jiao (Balanced Wood). The pathogen injures the Lung. If the firelight is blazing, ice, snow, frost, and hail will occur, causing disasters in the direction associated with the number seven. Its ruling stars correspond to scaled reptiles, hidden animals, pigs, and rats. If the Zang Qi arrives too early, severe cold will ensue.
(Explanation of Metal Insufficiency: When Metal transport is insufficient, the harvesting administration is broken. Since the Qi of harvesting is delayed, Wood has no fear, and the Qi of growth rises. The virtues of growth and transformation combine, so all things flourish. Rising is the Qi of Fire; restlessness is the function of Metal. Metal governs sound. "Keng Jin" means the sound does not come out. "Mao" is a disease of the Lung meridian's movement; "Jue" is rebellious Qi moving upward. Cough and wheezing result from Fire punishing the Lung. The organ primarily affected is the Lung. The fruits, solids, grains, tastes, colors, livestock, insects, and sounds mentioned are all manifestations of Metal insufficiency transforming alongside Wood and Fire. Brightness and scorching heat indicate Fire excess. Sneezing, coughing, nasal congestion, and epistaxis are diseases of Metal. Shao Shang being like Shao Zhi refers generally to years ending in Yi. Shang governs the Metal tone; since Metal is insufficient, it is called Shao Shang. Since Fire also acts, it shares the transformation with Shao Zhi. Shang Shang being like Zheng Shang refers to the years Yi Mao and Yi You, where Yangming Dryness Metal rules Heaven, hence called Shang Shang. Although Metal is insufficient, it receives assistance from Heaven, making the Metal Qi balanced and not overcome by Fire, identical to the Shen Ping (Balanced Metal) Qi. Thus, Shang Shang is like Zheng Shang. Shang Jiao being like Zheng Jiao refers to the years Yi Si and Yi Hai, where Jueyin Wind Wood rules Heaven, hence called Shang Jiao. The Qi of growth rises and receives heavenly assistance, making it identical to the Zheng Jiao year. Water and Fire contend, so the pathogen injures the Lung. Blazing light indicates severe Fire excess. Ice, snow, frost, and hail indicate Water recovery. The disaster is in the West (Dui trigram). Ruling stars like scaled reptiles and pigs/rats are Water animals. Early arrival of Zang Qi causes severe cold.)
The cycle of He Liu (Dried Stream) is called "Fan Yang" (Reversed Yang). The storage command is not executed, while the transformation Qi prospers. The growth Qi is proclaimed, and hibernating insects do not hide. The soil is moist, springs decrease, grass and trees grow lush, and flowers and leaves are full and abundant. Its Qi is stagnant. Its function is seeping and draining. Its movement manifests as hardness and stillness. Its onset manifests as dryness and withering. The affected organ is the Kidney. Its fruits are dates and apricots. Its solid parts are juicy and fleshy. Its grains are millet and broomcorn millet. Its tastes are sweet and salty. Its color is black. Its livestock are pigs and cattle. Its insects are scaled and shelled creatures. Its ruling star is dusty and obscure. Its sound is Yu (Water) and Gong (Earth). Its diseases are flaccidity, cold limbs, and hardness in the lower body. This is due to transforming into Earth. Shao Yu (Insufficient Water) is similar to Shao Gong (Insufficient Earth). Shang Gong (Excessive Earth) is the same as Zheng Gong (Balanced Earth). Its disease is strangury (Liong Bi, difficulty in urination). The pathogen injures the Kidney.
(Explanation of Water Insufficiency: When Cold Water is insufficient, Yang counteracts it. The water storage command fails, and the earth transformation command prospers. With water command failing, Fire has no fear, so the growth Qi can be proclaimed. Yang heat becomes excessive, so hibernating insects do not hide. Moist soil and decreased springs indicate Earth overcoming Water. Lush grass and trees indicate receiving the growth-transformation Qi. Stickiness is the Qi of Earth; seepage is the function of Water. Hardness and stillness indicate Earth controlling Water to form accumulations. Dryness and withering indicate Yin fluid deficiency. The organ is the Kidney. The fruits, solids, grains, tastes, colors, livestock, insects, and sounds transform alongside Fire and Earth due to Water insufficiency. Dust and obscurity indicate Earth excess. Flaccidity, cold limbs, and lower hardness are Kidney diseases. This is Water insufficiency transforming into Earth. Shao Yu like Shao Gong refers generally to years ending in Xin. Yu is the Water tone; Water is insufficient, hence Shao Yu. Earth acts concurrently, hence transforming like Shao Gong. Shang Gong like Zheng Gong refers to Xin Chou and Xin Wei years, where Taiyin Damp Earth rules Heaven, hence Shang Gong. Earth acts concurrently and receives heavenly aid, so the Shao Yu cycle becomes identical to the Zheng Gong year. Strangury indicates pathogen injuring the Kidney and failing Kidney Qi transformation. Dusty sudden rain indicates severe Earth excess. Violent shaking and uprooting indicate Wood recovery. The disaster is in the North (Kan trigram). Fur represents gathering, born from spring forest Qi. Foxes and martens use fur for coats, hence their ruling status. *Erya* states foxes are changing beasts, good at transformation. *Guanzi* states fox white responds to Yin-Yang changes.)
Therefore, acting on danger without speed leads to disaster striking back. Minor victories bring minor retribution; major victories bring major retribution. This is the constant law of Qi. (This summarizes the preceding text, stating that when the Five Transports are insufficient, the conquering Qi takes advantage of the weakness and arrives quickly, bringing only excessive victory without harmonious virtue, leading to the child Qi retaliating. Disaster strikes back. If the victory is minor, the retribution is minor; if severe, the retribution is severe. This is the normal pattern of victory and retribution.)
The cycle of Fa Sheng (Generating) is called "Qi Chen" (Opening and Spreading). Earth disperses and drains, allowing Cang Qi (Wood Qi) to reach. Yang harmony spreads transformation, and Yin Qi follows. The generating Qi is pure and transformative, causing all things to flourish. Its transformation is generation. Its Qi is beautiful. Its administration is dispersed. Its orders are flexible and comfortable. Its movement manifests as tremors, dizziness, and head diseases. Its virtue manifests as sounds, scattering, opening, and splitting. Its variation manifests as violent shaking and uprooting. Its grains are hemp and rice. Its livestock are chickens and dogs. Its fruits are plums and peaches. Its colors are green, yellow, and white. Its tastes are sour, sweet, and pungent. Its image corresponds to Spring. Its meridians connect to Foot Jueyin Liver and Foot Shaoyang Gallbladder. Its Zang organs correspond to Liver and Spleen. Its insects are hairy and shelled. Its objects are hard inside and outside. Its disease is anger. Tai Jiao (Excessive Wood) is the same as Shang Shang (Excessive Metal). Shang Zhi (Excessive Fire) causes rebellious Qi, leading to vomiting and diarrhea. If virtue is neglected, harvesting Qi returns, autumn air becomes sharp, even leading to desolation, clear Qi arrives heavily, grass and trees wither, and the pathogen injures the Liver.
(Year of Wood Excess is called Fa Sheng. Qi means opening; Chen means spreading. Spreading Yang harmony is the image of generating all things. Earth is controlled and transformed, thus governing dispersion. Cang Qi is Wood Qi. Above Jueyin, Wind Wood governs, so Yang harmony spreads above, and Yin Qi follows below. Generating Qi is surplus, so all things feel it and flourish. Dispersion is Wood's administration. Flexibility is Yang harmony's order. Tremors, dizziness, and head diseases indicate Wind excess above. Sound is Wind Wood's voice. Mi means scattering. Qi Che means Fa Chen (opening and spreading), corresponding to Spring Qi. Violent shaking and uprooting are Wind variations. Grains, livestock, fruits, colors, tastes, insects, and objects transform through mutual control due to excessive Wood. Image corresponds to Spring, meridians connect to Foot Jueyin Liver and Foot Shaoyang Gallbladder, Zang organs correspond to Liver and Spleen, disease is anger due to Liver Qi excess. Tai Jiao like Shang Shang means excessive Qi has natural control; control brings transformation. In Tai Jiao years, Wood excess is controlled by Metal, generating grains like rice/hemp, fruits like plums/peaches, livestock/chickens/dogs, insects/hairy/shelled, all transforming via Wood/Metal Qi, same as Shang Shang years. Since Ren years lack Yangming Heaven rule, Tai Jiao is like Shang Shang. If Yangming ruled Heaven, Shang Shang would be like Zheng Jiao, indicating natural control exists even without Heaven rule. Shang Zhi refers to years where Shaoyin Ministerial Fire or Shaoyang Ministerial Fire rules Heaven (Ren Zi, Ren Wu, Ren Yin, Ren Shen). Wood surplus with Fire above creates rebellion. Rebellion above causes vomiting; below causes diarrhea. Severe Wood excess brings Metal recovery, autumn sharpness, desolation, withering, and Liver injury.)
The cycle of He Xi (Brilliant Heat) is called "Fan Mao" (Flourishing). Yin Qi transforms internally, Yang Qi glorifies externally. Hot summer applies transformation, allowing things to prosper. Its transformation is growth. Its Qi is high. Its administration is active. Its orders are clear. Its movement manifests as burning heat and reckless disturbance. Its virtue is warm summer and muggy evaporation. Its variation is fierce inflammation and boiling. Its grains are wheat and beans. Its livestock are sheep and pigs. Its fruits are apricots and chestnuts. Its colors are red, white, and black. Its tastes are bitter, pungent, and salty. Its image corresponds to Summer. Its meridians connect to Hand Shaoyin Heart, Hand Taiyang Small Intestine, Hand Jueyin Pericardium, and Hand Shaoyang Sanjiao. Its Zang organs are Heart and Lung. Its insects are feathered and scaled. Its objects have soft veins. Its diseases include laughter, malaria, sores, bleeding, madness, and red eyes. Shang Yu (Excessive Water) is the same as Zheng Zhi (Balanced Fire). Its harvest is uniform. Its disease is malaria. Shang Zhi (Excessive Fire) delays harvesting. Tyrannical administration causes Zang Qi to recover, often showing gloomy scenes, even rain, frost, and hail causing extreme cold, injuring the Heart.
(Year of Fire Excess is called He Xi. Growth Qi is strong, so plants flourish. Above Shaoyin, Ministerial Fire governs, so Yin transforms internally and Yang glories externally. Hot summer applies transformation, governing Summer commands. Things prosper by receiving Growth Qi. Summer governs growth, so its transformation is growth. Fire rises, so its Qi is high. Fire moves, so its administration is active. Fire is bright, so its orders are clear. Burning and reckless disturbance refer to limb restlessness. Warm summer and muggy evaporation are harmonious Qi. Fierce inflammation and boiling are extreme changes. Grains, livestock, fruits, insects, objects, colors, and tastes transform through mutual control. Image corresponds to Summer, meridians connect to Hand Shaoyin Heart, Hand Taiyang Small Intestine, Hand Jueyin Pericardium, Hand Shaoyang Sanjiao. Heart is Fire organ. Connection to Lung refers to *Wu Zang Sheng Cheng Pian*: Lung combines with skin, glory in hair, master of Heart. All Zang follow this. *Ling Shu* states: Heart Qi excess causes incessant laughter. This classic states: Summer injury by heat causes Autumn malaria. Sores, bleeding, madness, red eyes are all Fire-Heat diseases. Shang Yu refers to Taiyang Cold Water ruling Heaven (Wu Chen, Wu Xu years). Fire excess controlled by Water balances Fire, same as Sheng Ming Zheng Zhi. Balanced Fire protects Metal, so harvest Qi balances with growth/transformation. Shang Yu year is Taiyang Heaven rule; Malaria is Taiyang disease. Shang Zhi refers to Ministerial Fires ruling Heaven (Wu Zi, Wu Wu, Wu Yin, Wu Shen). Fire heat intensifies, delaying harvest. Tyrannical administration indicates severe Fire excess. Water recovery causes gloom, even rain/hail, injuring Heart.)
The cycle of Dun Fu (High Mound) is called "Guang Hua" (Broad Transformation). Deep virtue is quiet and clear, following growth to fill. Extreme Yin is solid inside, things transform fully. Mist and haze gather over thick earth. Heavy rains occur frequently, dampness functions, dry administration retreats. Its transformation is round. Its Qi is abundant. Its administration is quiet. Its orders are complete. Its movement manifests as damp accumulation and aggregation. Its virtue is soft, moist, and heavy. Its variation is shocking wind and sudden collapse. Its grains are broomcorn millet and hemp. Its livestock are cattle and dogs. Its fruits are dates and plums. Its colors are black and green. Its tastes are sweet, salty, and sour. Its image corresponds to Late Summer. Its meridians connect to Foot Taiyin Spleen and Foot Yangming Stomach. Its Zang organs are Spleen and Kidney. Its insects are naked and hairy. Its objects are fleshy and stony. Its diseases are abdominal fullness and inability to move limbs. Sudden strong winds injure the Spleen.
(Earth Excess is called Dun Fu. Earth Qi is strong, spreading transformation to four directions, hence Broad Transformation. Deep virtue and quietness are Earth's nature. Following growth to fill is Fire-Earth combination. Above Taiyin, Damp Earth governs, so Extreme Yin is solid inside, things transform fully. Taiyin is Extreme Yin among Yin; internal Yin solidity allows external transformation. Mist and haze are Earth Qi. Thick earth appears in mountains. Frequent heavy rains mean dampness steams up, becoming pouring rain. Pi means avoiding. In late Summer/Autumn transition, Damp Earth governs; strong dampness makes Autumn dryness retreat. Yuan means round/universal. Feng means abundant/full. Quiet is Earth's administration. Zhou Bei is Earth's order. Ju means gathering. Dampness causes stickiness and accumulation. Soft/moist/heavy is Earth's virtue. Shock/collapse is Qi variation. Grains, livestock, insects, fruits, colors, tastes transform via mutual control. Meridians connect to Foot Taiyin Spleen/Foot Yangming Stomach, Zang to Spleen/Kidney. Abdominal fullness and limb paralysis are Water-Damp diseases. Earth excess brings Wind recovery, injuring Spleen.)
The cycle of Jian Cheng (Firm Formation) is called "Shou Yin" (Harvesting and Pulling). Heaven Qi is clean, Earth Qi is bright. Yang Qi follows Yin for transformation. Dryness executes its administration, things achieve completion. Harvest Qi spreads abundantly, transformation does not finish. Its transformation is completion. Its Qi is diminished. Its administration is solemn. Its orders are sharp. Its movement manifests as violent breaking and sores/infectious diseases. Its virtue is mist, dew, and rustling. Its variation is desolation and withering. Its grains are rice and millet. Its livestock are chickens and horses. Its fruits are peaches and apricots. Its colors are white, green, and red. Its tastes are pungent, sour, and bitter. Its image corresponds to Autumn. Its meridians connect to Hand Taiyin Lung and Hand Yangming Large Intestine. Its Zang organs are Lung and Liver. Its insects are shelled and feathered. Its objects have shells and networks. Its diseases are panting, chest oppression, and仰息 (breathing with head thrown back). Shang Zhi (Excessive Fire) is the same as Zheng Shang (Balanced Metal). Its growth is uniform. Its disease is cough. If administration changes violently, famous trees fail to flourish, tender branches wither, Growth Qi comes to rescue, Great Fire flows, scorching heat arrives, vines wither, pathogen injures Lung.
(Metal Excess is named Jian Cheng. Autumn governs harvesting, called Shou Yin. Clean Heaven/Bright Earth is Metal clarity. Above Yangming, Dryness governs, so Yin Metal transforms above, Yangming Qi follows below. Autumn governs harvest, so Dryness executes administration, things complete. Autumn harvests, Late Summer transforms; early harvest Qi means transformation doesn't finish. Cheng is Autumn transformation; Xiao is Metal Qi. Su is Metal administration. Rui Qie is Metal order. Bao Chai means tendon injury. Yang Zhu means skin disease. Mist/dew/rustling is auspicious Qi. Desolation/withering is Qi variation. Grains, livestock, fruits, insects, objects, colors, tastes transform via mutual control. Image corresponds to Autumn, meridians to Hand Taiyin Lung/Hand Yangming Large Intestine, Zang to Lung/Liver. Panting/chest oppression indicates Metal excess and Lung fullness. Shang Zhi refers to Shaoyin/ShaoYang Fire ruling Heaven (Geng Zi, Geng Wu, Geng Yin, Geng Shen). Metal excess controlled by Fire balances Metal, same as Shen Ping Zheng Shang. Balanced Metal lets Wood growth rise equally with other Qi. Cough indicates Fire injuring Lung. Excessive desolation injures plants; Growth Qi rescues, Great Fire flows west, Lung gets injured.)
The cycle of Liu Yan (Flowing Expansion) is called "Feng Cang" (Sealing and Storage). Cold governs transformation, Heaven Qi is severe and condensed. Storage administration spreads, growth command is suppressed. Its transformation is chilling. Its Qi is firm. Its administration is quiet. Its orders flow and circulate. Its movement manifests as floating discharge and surging floods. Its virtue is gloomy cold. Its variation is ice, snow, frost, and hail. Its grains are beans and millet. Its livestock are pigs and cattle. Its fruits are chestnuts and dates. Its colors are black and red. Its tastes are salty, bitter, and sweet. Its image corresponds to Winter. Its meridians connect to Foot Shaoyin Kidney and Foot Taiyang Bladder. Its Zang organs are Kidney and Heart. Its insects are scaled. Its objects are moist and full. Its disease is distension. Shang Yu (Excessive Water) prevents growth transformation. Excessive administration causes transformation Qi to surge, dust and haze mix, heavy rains fall, pathogen injures Kidney.
(Water Excess is Liu Yan. Winter governs storage, hence Feng Cang. Cold governs transformation, so Heaven Qi condenses. Water administration spreads, Fire command is suppressed. Lin Lie is Cold transformation. Jian Ning is Cold Qi. Mi is quiet. Liu Zhu is Water nature. Piao Xie Wo Yong is Water disease. Ning Can Han Li is harmonious Cold Qi. Ice/snow/frost/hail are extreme Cold changes. Grains, livestock, fruits, insects, objects, colors, tastes transform via mutual control. Image corresponds to Winter, meridians to Foot Shaoyin Kidney/Foot Taiyang Bladder, Zang to Kidney/Heart. Distension is Water overwhelming Earth. Shang Yu refers to Taiyang Cold Water ruling Heaven (Bing Chen, Bing Xu years). Water excess prevents Fire transformation. Water excess brings Earth recovery. Dust/haze is damp steam. Qi Jiao is damp rising as clouds, Heaven descending as rain. Heavy rain injures Kidney.)
Therefore, it is said: If virtue is not constant, the conquered Qi returns. If administration maintains virtue, the conquered Qi transforms together. This is what is meant. (Summarizes Five Transport Qi. If relying on strength without constant virtue, the conquered Qi returns—insulting others leads to injury oneself, lacking fear. If administration is peaceful and follows principles, the conquered Qi transforms together. "Together transformation" means if Spring has gentle breezes, Autumn has cool mist/dew. Previous chapter discussed surplus/deficit of Five Transports, affecting people/nature/stars, called *Qi Jiao Bian Da Lun*. This chapter discusses Five Transports ruling years, including balanced, excess, and insufficient, governing fruits/grains/insects/livestock/plants/colors/tastes/growth/storage, constants of Five Administration Orders, hence *Wu Chang Zheng Da Lun*. Seven Transport Chapters are similar but distinct; scholars should study carefully.)
Huangdi asked: Heaven is deficient in the northwest, left cold and right cool. Earth is incomplete in the southeast, right hot and left warm. What is the reason? (Heaven has Yin/Yang, Earth has Yin/Yang. Discussing Heaven's Five Transports then Earth's four directions. Left cold/right cool, left hot/right warm follows Post-Heaven Bagua images. Post-Heaven Bagua: Li South, Kan North, Zhen East, Dui West. Four directions exist after Heaven/Earth opened.)
Qibo answered: The principle of Yin/Yang Qi, height/depth, and difference between Shao/Tai. (Yin/Yang Qi refers to cold/hot Qi in four directions. Height/depth refers to terrain elevation. Shao/Tai refers to Four Images. Differences arise from regional meteorological conditions.)
Southeast is Yang. Yang's essence descends downward, hence right hot and left warm. Northwest is Yin. Yin's essence ascends upward, hence left cold and right cool. Thus, Earth has heights and depths, Qi has warmth and cold. High places are cold, low places are hot. (Essence refers to Jing Water generated by Heavenly Yi.)
