Huangdi was in the Mingtang (Bright Hall), and Leigong asked respectfully: "I have received instruction and transmitted it, teaching according to the classic treatises, calmly studying forms and methods, Yin-Yang acupuncture and moxibustion, and the nourishing effects of herbal decoctions. In treatment, there are distinctions between the virtuous/capable and the incompetent, and perfection is not always achieved. If one first discusses sorrow, anger, joy, dryness, dampness, cold, heat, Yin-Yang, and women's diseases, asking for their causes, involving status of lowly or noble, the origin of human physique, and the communication of subordinates, adapting to the Daoist arts in practice, I have listened with reverence. Now I wish to ask some foolish and trivial questions that are not recorded in the classics, and I desire to hear their descriptions." Huangdi said: "This is significant." Leigong then asked: "When crying, tears do not flow out, or if they flow out, there is little mucus; what is the reason?" Huangdi said: "This is recorded in the classics." Leigong asked again: "I do not know where water originates, nor where mucus comes from." Huangdi said: "Asking such questions is of no benefit to treatment; this is knowledge known to craftsmen, from which the Dao arises. The Heart is the essence of the Five Zang organs, the eyes are its orifices, and the luster of the complexion is its glory. Therefore, when a person possesses virtue, harmonious Qi flows into the eyes; if there is deficiency, sorrow manifests in the complexion. Thus, sorrow leads to weeping, and tears originate from this. The source of water is accumulated water; accumulated water belongs to Extreme Yin; Extreme Yin is the Essence of the Kidney. The water of the Zong Essence does not flow out because it is held by the Essence, assisted and wrapped by it, so the water does not move. The essence of Water lies in Zhi (Will/Intent), and the essence of Fire lies in Shen (Spirit). When Water and Fire interact, and both Shen and Zhi feel sorrow, water is produced in the eyes. Hence the proverb says: 'Heart sorrow is called Zhi sorrow.' Zhi and Heart Essence gather together at the eyes. Therefore, when both feel sorrow, Shen Qi transmits to the Heart Essence; if it does not transmit to Zhi and only Zhi feels sorrow alone, then tears flow. Mucus and tears belong to the Brain; the Brain is Yin; Marrow fills the bones; thus, brain leakage becomes mucus. Zhi is the master of the bones; therefore, as water flows, mucus follows them, as their movement patterns are similar. Mucus and tears are like brothers; in urgency, they die together; in life, they live together. Because Zhi grieves early, mucus and tears flow out together and spread horizontally. When mucus and tears flow out together and follow each other, it is because they belong to the same category."
Leigong said: "Very profound. I ask: when a person cries but tears do not flow out, or flow out sparingly, and mucus does not follow, what is the reason?" Huangdi said: "Whether tears flow depends on whether the crying is heartfelt. If tears do not flow, it is because Shen is not compassionate. If Shen is not compassionate, Zhi is not sorrowful. Yin and Yang hold each other in balance; how can tears come alone? When Zhi is sorrowful, it feels suppressed; suppression impacts Yin; impacting Yin causes Zhi to leave the eyes; when Zhi leaves, Shen cannot guard the Essence; when Spirit and Essence leave the eyes, mucus and tears flow. Moreover, have you not read and reflected upon the classic statements? Jue syndrome causes blindness in the eyes. When a person suffers from Jue syndrome, Yang Qi gathers in the upper part, and Yin Qi gathers in the lower part. Yang gathering above means Fire shines alone; Yin gathering below means cold feet; cold feet lead to abdominal distension. One Water cannot overcome Five Fires, hence the eyes become blind. Therefore, when encountering wind, tears flow incessantly. When Wind pathogen invades the eyes, Yang Qi is internally guarded within the Essence; this is Fire Qi burning the eyes, hence tears flow upon seeing wind. This can be compared to other phenomena: intense fire and strong wind generate rain; this is of the same category."
